Advice about a 223

Hi Ive never posted on this site. I'm looking opinions on a ruger 223 m77 .I've had a 22lr and currently shoot a 22 mag..I've been shooting safely about 6 years and mainly shoot fox and rabbit. I want more range and power so I've opted for 223..

Welcome to the forum.

The Ruger Hawkeye is a great rifle. Reliable, accurate and good quality. I've fired a few on the range and all performed very well. For the price you have other options so i'd advise to you visit a range or two and see if you can get talking to lads to see what else is available. Might also get a chance to test fire the Ruger and get a feel for it before buying.

Thanks for the reply. I would love to go to a range however there is no range that I know of in my area. I don't want to buy junk as I did with my first .22. Ended up buying another about six months later. Where would the closest range be to Wexford. Can I just arrive or are they club run.

Here is a link to all the rifle ranges in the country. Have a look and see if any are near you.

Most ranges welcome walk ins. They will be happy to show you around and its legal to fire rifles on a range, under supervision, that you are not licensed on. Its how you get people into the sport/range.

If you cannot find a range or are nervous about walking in "blind" and you fancy a trip you're more than welcome to come up to the midlands and i'll happily show you around and let you get a sense of other rifles. Cannot guarantee a Ruger will be available, but i'll arrange something for you to try.

I recently bought a Ruger m77mk11 in 223.

There are a few things I don't particularly like about the rifle but most ill learn to live with, the others ill change.

1. The trigger is/was horrible as standard. Heavy and creepy, Its well documented on US fourms.
2. The barrel wasn't free-floating so groups were a bit all over the place when I bought it.
3. The composite standard stock is flexi as hell so the fore end is easily distorted so it contacts the barrel and screws up accuracy.
4. Personally I find the lack of a magazine a pain in the ass when loading and unloading.

With a bit of fettling thou mine has come good and will easily group sub moa if I do my bit.

Not a great gun but most definitely not a bad one either.

A lot of dealers have 2nd hand 223's in very good nick. Lads buy 223's and after a while trade up to a 243 for deer. I wouldnt be afraid to buy a 2nd hand 223, as most of em have nothing done, only a few foxes. I am biased but i reckon the CZ is the best value for money out there. I think the Rugers have gone back a bit and are not as good as they were years ago. But when it comes down to it they will all slay foxes!

fabulous round for foxes had one for 2 years mine was a savage axis the shocking thing was the accuracy was very good for a cheap rifle.

This is exactly the type of advice I was looking. Will most definitely arrange to go to the range and have a look see.
