It's a volac product, with many other similar Volac derivatives...interesting if you could find out what the different price points are for these similar products...

A screengrab I took from an earlier thread

Last year ( Early 2017 ) I contacted a good number of suppliers for "competitively priced milk replacer " What I found was comparing Like with Like , the Protein content etc , best deals were the smaller not so heavily promoted milk replacers .
The only way to get price down is where they will supply you with a Pallet of 20 kg bags delivered . I cannot remember if it was perhaps twenty bags.
Good price reduction , tho one would need to store it carefully, unless one has a loc of suckie calves in batches .I would like to hear if you make any progress ? P

Getting to that time of year again...

We used 111 bags of Bonanza Shine Once A Day to rear 67 Bull Calves last year and we plan on using it again this year to rear the calves. Just wondering if anyone has got any prices yet for it.

    TIA

Don't have a price and no need for sneery remarks

24% protein and over 50% skim is about €1340 to €1650.
    Powder for lambs/kids €1850 to €1950.

That's per tonne? About €33 per 20kg bag for the calf powder so.

Wouldn’t post prices for lot of stuff here bar to lads I’d know as like everything there’s deals to be done and price is determined by lots of things like payement date /purchasing group disc etc etc

All depends on what rate your feeding the replacer at Kev could be anywhere from 600 to 900 gramms of powder per calf per day depending on farmer .hard beat dairy calves rested on good quality powder with consistent feed rates/times etc etc

Mahoney_j - Are you still using the Shine OAD, (think you were using it at one stage anyway) we don’t want to change as we found it very good the last few years...

    Per ton.
    You’re rearing for beef?
Consider using powder for lambs or kid goats. They’ll be as fat as snails after 60-80 days on it...just like they were under a cow.
Found it hard to get carcass weights over 400kg (16mts) until we changed over.

Lads just like a ballpark figure as a guide. Your supplier will not be threatened!

Was paying 45 euro for 23 % Volac at Local Co Op Store late 2018.
Know we were being charged well , but unable to locate any good options , unless purchase 1 X Ton Pallets .
Any suggestions on smaller amounts this year ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭blackdog1

Can get elvor milk powder for 2000 a tonne equivalent to 40 euro a 20kg bag. Comes in 25kg bags so it's 50 per 25kg bag.

On a side note was talking to a guy from the North that rears veal and he only uses half the milk powder rate but has some serious calf ration and says calves fly on it.

Did someone here have trial results on the best type of milk replacer, in terms of performance as opposed to price?

Wait till after 10 days old. Start off at roughly 600 grams per calf and work your way up to about 800 grams I think it is. Can't be certain as I've it marked out in jugs and can't remember the weights correctly. (Mahoney will be on shortly to correct me :))

I never feed hay only straw as hay can give them pot bellys. As for the crunch always have some available for them in a trough so that they can nibble on it. They will increase their intake themselves when they are ready. I prefer the pencils myself.

Once they are eating a good 1kg a head a day it's time to wean them off the milk. I get that at roughly 10 to 11 weeks old.

Nothing further to add there !!!!!,only thing I’d do is maby check weight of jug once a week or def beteween batches .fully agree on the hay ,even good stuff ,oaten straw I find v good for feeding

It'll be my first year using replacers so I'm leaning more towards skim rather than whey based even though it'll cost €5-7 more to rear them.

Anyone got any thoughts on skim being better at forming a curd in the stomach and easier reared than a whey based powder?

Skim is supposed to be better as it's protein is taken from milk as opposed to a plant protein. This is more natural for the calf

With the last few years I've been using the top of the range skim powders but I've been having problems after weaning with summer scour. My thinking rightly or wrongly is that calves are too content on the skim, not eating enough roughage and therefore stomach lining isn't prepared for transition to grass. As an experiment this year Im going to try a more whey based powder and get them eating more roughage and ration. Time will tell.

I put adlib ration feeders in with the calves, got bird flaps on them. Only put in a bit initially but as they eat more you can put in a bag or two and know how much they are eating. Will try and put them to grass while still on milk hoping to make the transition better, will depend on weather at the time

Don’t judge powder on price ,those vitalac powders would be far superior to any of afore mentioned

Thankfully don’t have that problem ,no issue getting them on concentrate or roughage ,calves would be eating straw and 1.5 kg plus ration at 8/10 weeks

Same as that. 6 calves would eat approx half a bale of straw at least in 2 months here

No skim in red as far as I know. Blue is a great product but you can get stuff as good or better for cheaper.

Looking at the spec of the Professional, according to their website, it's skim based.
