You couldn't make this story up.

In my view if "refugees" don't like the food in Ireland they are getting for free then they should go home.

    http://www.shannonside.ie/news/local/roscommon/syrian-refugees-threaten-lawsuit-food-ballagh-centre/
A group of Ballaghaderreen refugees have written to the Justice Minister threatening to take legal action over alleged problems in the Abbeyfield Hotel emergency reception and orientation centre.

In an email released under the Freedom of Information Act, with personal details omitted, they also claim there was an alleged assault of a staff member over the food at the centre.
Jacqueline Mullen, the centre manager, says the complaint was baseless and was written solely as a means of the refugees securing permanent accommodation elsewhere.

    Some mistake?

Title refers to Syrian refugees, but article clearly refers to Ballaghaderreen refugees...

Ssshhh! You are not allowed say or publish anything negative regarding immigration from predominantly Muslim countries. Did you not see the tv3 propaganda truth piece on Ballaghedereen? The refugees are all highly skilled medical and software professionals ready and willing to integrate with Western culture. Nothing to see here! Move along!

I thought this was discussion was about "refugees"

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

And they really love our GAA sports now. That alone is enough to let them stay forever.

Some neck on them. You would think they'd be grateful.
They could go home to Syria if they want,Isis are all but gone now.

Talking to some refugees; the food in those places is sh!te. A lot of them would have been used to cooking for themselves and are now not only in a situation where they're not allowed to cook, they're being served greasy, deep-fried yuk on a daily basis.

Generally there is no such thing as a free lunch. But in this case there is but they dont like it.

They are lucky to be getting it at all.

Lots of Syrians are going back actually.

I'd like to see some more info before rushing out to grab a pitchfork.

Just because they are refugees I don't think they should have to be eating gruel out of a trough, and that they should be grateful for it. Nor should they be getting fine dining of course, but that happy medium.

I wouldn't be too surprised to find a hotel is applying for funding and then pocketing most of the money either, I wonder how it is being regulated and audited?

Yup all they had to do for this free lunch was give up everything they own and their entire lives. And yes they are lucky to be getting it but it doesn't remove their right to complain.

Half a million according to the UNHCR.
Either take your safety and free food and board or head home to Syria like a lot of others have done.
I'm positive Syria needs all these doctors and engineers to help rebuild the country.

Better than the rough sleepers get why not Fook the refugees out and take the homeless in instead?

Can't see them crying about the food and warm bed.

There is no homeless crisis in Ireland according to many on here

Its government funded so we know for sure someone is fleecing it and making money on the side.
Thats how it works with government contracts.

I was on a Fas course many years ago and if their food is as bad as what the canteen served up back then you may have a point.

Lots of Syrians are going back actually.

Why did they get put here then, so far away?

I'd have absolutely no problem with scaling up refugee efforts in Ireland if it made sense. The problem is, it doesn't.

Its a million miles away from the cultures of these refugees, its geographically a million miles away, we have a tiny population that (magically) has a property crisis, etc.......

And if I knew they were all going to go home eventually, absolutely no problem on my end, scale the thing up.

But only the most naïve would believe that most of these people are ever going home, and if they DO go home, they'll be back with the relatives on the irish passport they'd eventually get.

The whole system is an entire cluster****, from start to finish.

Whether theyre happy with the food or not is the least of it.

    (not talking about Syrians exclusively)

    What crap posting is this?
ISIS are gone from Syria and there wasn't a big Syrian refugee influx because of Assad.
    Poor effort

We had a big refugee centre in Austria on the border to Hungary that was insanely overcrowded.
The refugees complained about the food. Lots of people said the same about they should better be grateful.
Then it turned out the food was disgusting sh1te that you wouldn't feed your dog. And way too little for them, families, kids and women first. Some men had to go hungry every day.
    Was pretty disgraceful.

So yeah, it would be nice to get more details on that.

I was on a Fas course 5 yrs ago and the food served was more the adequate.
I even paid for it albeit at a subsidised rate.
Full fry up for 2.50, fcuk ,I considered doing another course just to get the cheap brekkie.

This was about 25 years ago the breakfast was great in all fairness.
The lunch was not fit for human consumption.

"If you don't like it then fcuk back to Syria" is such a lazy and ignorant response. They can be grateful for the refuge and still want food quality standards improved. I know I wouldn't want to eat shlt if I had to flee my home and I'd make damned sure my voice was heard.

I have changed my opinion from my first gut reaction on reading this thread.
I agree bad food can cause depression and ill health.

I often went hungry at those things years ago, same with school trips, absolute slop unless it was greasy chips. And we came from a very modest diet of spuds and meat, nothing fancy at home.

If only there was some sort of camp where they could do manual labour and be fed and housed.

    Whats auschwitz in Irish?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,166 ✭✭✭Are Am Eye

Possibly a bit of commumication and common sense migjt have resolved this before it went to legal threats. They probably juzt want the food they're used to from back home. If the kitchen staff in conjunction with a few knowledgeable syrians could come up with a some syrian dishes and recipies to add to the rotation and everyones happy.

probably pork on a daily basis, Irish breakfast, sausage and chips for dinner, bacon butties in the evening.. for people who don't eat pork, this must be a problem.. Im just guessing

Think people are missing this bit.
They are only looking for free permanent housing.

We had our own workhouses years ago, most prominently during the famine times. I doubt anyone wants a return to that

Surely if their situation was that dire then the hotel food not being what they want wouldn't be such a big issue, or large enough that you'd take legal action against the country who saved your life. If its that bad surely even the blandest meal of bare rice or pasta and a roof over their head and safety would be a massive step up from their homeland and something they'd be massively grateful for?
But no they're assaulting the people serving them food
    Seriously defending the indefensible

This has shag all to do with the food I'd say. I heard one or two of them being interviewed recently on radio. They're all cracking up in Ballaghaderreen. Simple as. A lot of these people are from large cities that have just been bombed into rubble. They aren't used to hanging around small towns with flip all going on in them. If they can get moved to Galway or Dublin, they'll say whatever they have to to get out of dodge.

Doesn't say a lot for Ballaghaderreen, mind, but it is what it is.

Anyone any ideas how much the contract was worth?

Mullen is working for Offaly-registered firm :

    Next Week & Co Limited

who have been awarded the contract to run the refugee centre for two years.

The food could be genuinely ****. I'd be more inclined to believe that its basic run-of-the-mill fare.

From the personal stories I know of refugees/immigrants in general, I'd also be inclined to believe that its a case of advantages being taken. Hopefully not the case.
