In my view if "refugees" don't like the food in Ireland they are getting for free then they should go home.

A group of Ballaghaderreen refugees have written to the Justice Minister threatening to take legal action over alleged problems in the Abbeyfield Hotel emergency reception and orientation centre.

In an email released under the Freedom of Information Act, with personal details omitted, they also claim there was an alleged assault of a staff member over the food at the centre.
Jacqueline Mullen, the centre manager, says the complaint was baseless and was written solely as a means of the refugees securing permanent accommodation elsewhere.

Title refers to Syrian refugees, but article clearly refers to Ballaghaderreen refugees...

Talking to some refugees; the food in those places is sh!te. A lot of them would have been used to cooking for themselves and are now not only in a situation where they're not allowed to cook, they're being served greasy, deep-fried yuk on a daily basis.

I thought a lot were coming from the likes of Calais in France where they say they are 15 but most older then me??

I'd like to see some more info before rushing out to grab a pitchfork.

Just because they are refugees I don't think they should have to be eating gruel out of a trough, and that they should be grateful for it. Nor should they be getting fine dining of course, but that happy medium.

I wouldn't be too surprised to find a hotel is applying for funding and then pocketing most of the money either, I wonder how it is being regulated and audited?

Yup all they had to do for this free lunch was give up everything they own and their entire lives. And yes they are lucky to be getting it but it doesn't remove their right to complain.

Its government funded so we know for sure someone is fleecing it and making money on the side.
Thats how it works with government contracts.

I was on a Fas course many years ago and if their food is as bad as what the canteen served up back then you may have a point.

I'd have absolutely no problem with scaling up refugee efforts in Ireland if it made sense. The problem is, it doesn't.

Its a million miles away from the cultures of these refugees, its geographically a million miles away, we have a tiny population that (magically) has a property crisis, etc.......

And if I knew they were all going to go home eventually, absolutely no problem on my end, scale the thing up.

But only the most naïve would believe that most of these people are ever going home, and if they DO go home, they'll be back with the relatives on the irish passport they'd eventually get.

The whole system is an entire cluster****, from start to finish.

Whether theyre happy with the food or not is the least of it.

(not talking about Syrians exclusively)

We had a big refugee centre in Austria on the border to Hungary that was insanely overcrowded.
The refugees complained about the food. Lots of people said the same about they should better be grateful.
Then it turned out the food was disgusting sh1te that you wouldn't feed your dog. And way too little for them, families, kids and women first. Some men had to go hungry every day.
Was pretty disgraceful.

So yeah, it would be nice to get more details on that.

I was on a Fas course 5 yrs ago and the food served was more the adequate.
I even paid for it albeit at a subsidised rate.
Full fry up for 2.50, fcuk ,I considered doing another course just to get the cheap brekkie.

This was about 25 years ago the breakfast was great in all fairness.
The lunch was not fit for human consumption.
