2017 gig of the year

The year is almost over and I have no gigs on the horizon so I'll set the ball rolling with a countdown of my top 5 gigs of 2017

    5) U2 in croker, 3rd time seeing them and by far the best.
    4) Radiohead in the 3, wasn't gone on the set list but still a great show.
    3) Guns n Roses at slane, finally got to see the band that turned me onto music. Great setlist.
    2) Therapy ? In Cyprus avenue Cork. It was an acoustic gig so I wasn't sure if they could pull it off. They proved they could big time.
    1) Eddy Vedder at the marquee Cork. I wouldn't be much of a pearl jam fan but I was blown away by this gig.

Had ticket for GnR but couldn't make it due to work. And worst concert was Hanz Zimmer due to hipster douchebags talking through the show. All they wanted to hear was the Inception sountdrack and started complaining when he didn't play it until the encore. Morons

2017 was a great year for concerts for me, although I didn't go to anything for the first five months. All my concerts were in the six month period between June and November. I can't reduce my year to five votes, so I'm doing a fairly eclectic top ten, and some "honourable mentions" that are worth including. The list of ten isn't necessarily in strict order, but I do think The Stone Roses was my outright favourite of the year, so it's at the top.

    The Stone Roses, SSE Arena
    Depeche Mode, 3Arena
    Queen + Adam Lambert, 3Arena
    Steely Dan, 3Arena
    Phil Collins, Aviva Stadium
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Olympia
    Eddie Vedder, 3Arena
    Belle and Sebastian, Iveagh Gardens
    U2, Croke Park
Regina Spektor, Bord Gais Energy Theatre

    Bubbling under:
    The National, Vicar Street
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Vicar Street

Guilty pleasure of the year: Bananarama, SSE Arena

Unique art pop performance: St. Vincent, Olympia
I can't really judge this as a conventional gig, insofar as it's one woman on stage with backing tracks and a very "theatrical" production. It's so different from a normal concert, I wasn't sure where it would fall in my top ten, so I'm mentioning it separately. Make no mistake, though: it was excellent.

Getting to see The Stone Roses indoors was incredible. Depeche Mode were as good as I've ever seen them, and on the back of their best album in twenty years, it was a very strong setlist. Queen + Adam Lambert was a terrific, full on "show" and a really enjoyable night. Phil Collins was an unlikely triumph, in that effectively an old man hobbled onto the stage and sat down for the whole show and it was still great. It's also probably the best sound I've ever heard at an outdoor show. The Steely Dan show was phenomenal. Donald Fagen is a funny guy. Belle and Sebastian did a great, career spanning set.

My three concert highlights of the year:
Jason Isbell's rendition of Tom Petty's American Girl: quite honestly one of the greatest things I've ever seen on a stage.
Depeche Mode doing Everything Counts, complete with 101 style audience singalong.
The string quartet/crowd singing Jeremy at the Eddie Vedder show.

2025 Gigs and Events: Stuart Murdoch, Lyle Lovett, Camera Obscura, The Corrs/Imelda May/Natalie Imbruglia, Olivia Rodrigo, Iron Maiden, Neil Young/Van Morrison, Dua Lipa, Lana Del Rey, Weezer, The Doobie Brothers, Billie Eilish (x2), Oasis, Sharon Van Etten, The Human League, Deacon Blue

Doobies at the 3 Arena for me. I went mainly to see/hear Donald Fagan and the Dan. But the Doobies were out of this world!

Been a great year but these three were the standouts.

    1. Aphex Twin, Forbidden Fruit
    2. Mulatu Astake, Sugar Club
    3. Black Sabbath, 3Arena

And Peter Hook (Academy) was great last weekend. Two and a half hours of New Order and Joy Division.

Tried to make a - a-hem - concerted effort to go to more gigs this year. Not living in Dublin means the options locally can be fairly limited, but I still managed to make it to twenty or so this year. Ones that stick out:

Deftones, Vicar Street: Great setlist, great atmosphere in the crowd. Felt properly exhilarated coming out of it, which is what you want after every gig of that type.

Melt Banana, Roisin Dubh, Galway: Just for the sheer sonic force of it - without a doubt the loudest gig I was ever at. The sound of the guitar bypassed your ears completely and went into the deepest part of your skull; I was sem-deaf for three to four days afterwards. Completely worth it.

St. Vincent, The Olympia: Wasn't blown away by some of it at the time, but - in retrospect - I'm glad I was there to see what she was attempting to do, particularly in the second half of the show. A unique experience.

Arnocorps. The Loft, Galway: San Francisco based hardcore punk band whose entire output is based on the films of Arnold Schwarzenegger. It's as ridiculous as it sounds and just as much fun. This was the best craic I had at a gig all year, hands down - and probably top five of all time. Everything just worked perfectly: the band didn't take the stage until about midnight and by then people were extremely hyped and it was just ludicrous transcendent bedlam for ninety minutes once they did arrive.

Biggest let down was Aphex Twin at Forbidden Fruit. I was expecting big things, but left feeling very underwhelmed.

Nice to see couple of refs to Isbell’s show on here. A gig that got zilch chat on boards otherwise.

Good year for the Olympia. Couldve had a top 5 from there alone. Run the Jewels/Ryan Adams/Elbow/Isbell and two of the three LCDSS gigs.

Three fest shows that stand out: Radiohead and Ryley Walker at Glasters.

    Duran Duran at the Pick.

Another thing worth mentioning about that show was the pin drop quiet audience during Tift Merritt's set. I've never witnessed an audience be so respectful to a support act. I think even she was stunned at the courtesy and reception she got. I know she has a profile of her own, but even so. A great example of an audience who were there for music above all else. A truly remarkable evening.

Kamasi Washington in the National Concert Hall. This should have been a real gem, but it was marred by appalling sound. They had two kits on stage and it was the worst drum sound I've ever witnessed, including outdoor shows.
