International Men's Day

International Men’s Day is coming up and my workplace has just sent out a notification.

Two things: firstly the focus on the day is “men’s role in the family and childcare”.

Why not focus on the fact that the leading cause of death in young men is suicide ? Why not look at the inequality in family courts where women are almost universally given custody ? Why not examine that domestic violence against men or sexual abuse of male teenagers by older women is not taken as seriously as if it were the other way round ?

Secondly, and rather sadly predictably – the response from female colleagues was “what rubbish, every day is Men’s day” and then a load of sexist claptrap culminating in “man up boys, we’re coming for your power” (utter nonsense that line!)

I’m a woman and I argue it’s needed because toxic feminism has moved over the line into blatant misandry. Men are the enemy to a lot of women and it’s not fair.

Look at the film that came out last year “Rough Night”. A “hilarious” tale where five women accidentally kill a male stripper at a hen party and then “bond over hiding the body”. You make that about five lads on a stag and it wouldn’t even get a meeting.

I believe in equality but I’m afraid the lads are on a losing streak. What are your thoughts ?

Tell the truth now, that didn't actually happen, did it.

Actually they got a meeting, it was filmed and released as 'Very Bad Things' back in 1998.

My company is marking the day by literally castrating the male employees and then putting them in stockades for the 4 women we have working here, to throw rotten fruit at.

Why can we only have a day, while sharks get a week?

Funny you should bring this up as my son said yesterday he thinks there should be a guy teacher working in the creche, to help stop another boy from messing.

It has about as much significance in my life as every other special day the other 364 days of the year. That is to say - not a whole lot.

One day of the year isn't going to have me care any more or any less about the small number of things I do care about, nor is it going to make me care any more about the vast majority of things that I don't care about. Special days are one of those things I just don't care about.

Christian Bale was superb in it.

Surely you've got some birthdays to deduct from that right? :P

Oh how I wish I'd made it up - but I work with an uber feminist.

Makes Una Mulally look like Chubby Brown she does.

Apologies, not familiar with that one.

It wouldn't get made now though.

Yep. Anyone who survives is dragged to the sacrificial altars on International Womens Day, to slake the bloodlust of dark feminine gods.

My work have cancelled it and replaced it by International Women's Day 2 because one day for us just isn't enough. We all have the day off paid and men have to do our jobs for us. Which they can't, obviously.

I've personally heard this type of stuff on more than one occasion.

While I'm not too fussed about an international men's day either way, it is telling that the focus is on what we men are doing wrong with regard to traditionally female roles as opposed to things men genuinely need support with. To turn the previous statements around, we have the whole rest of the year to be reminded of and address our supposed patriarchal failings, why not have one day where we can unashamedly discuss our own issues in life?

Seriously lads, I work with women who would nod along to that as a good idea!!!!

    ** shudder **

Have you raised this issue with your company?

No chance. We're very focused on "gender equality" by having women only shortlists for certain roles.

When I mentioned this seemed the very opposite of equality and was actually discriminating against men, it did not go down well.

True but really, I don't feel like that's lacking.

The whole Movember movement has done great things in addressing the issue of men's health, both mental and physical.

Although it's a pity that it involves loads of dodgy moustaches. Half my office look like 70's porn stars.

The whole point of Movember is to raise money for prostate and testicular cancer.

Is that really specific to the month of November though?

I told the two other members of my household - both men - that it was International Womens Day, and both of them said every day was womens day, as I filled the dishwasher. OH MY GOD THE MISOGYNISTS!

IMD is what you make of it, and I don't see why men's role in the family shouldn't be celebrated and all the daddies and brothers and sons get a pat on the back.

Positive things should be celebrated as well as negative things addressed.

I absolutely agree but that's not their focus - it's definitely more like "why men don't help more". Which is insane.

@Candie - your idea is exactly what should be celebrated.

I don't see why the workplace should be getting involved in IMD or it's female equivalent. Just asking for trouble.

I think both days are great opportunities to discuss issues relevant to each gender. Yes there are always the jokes but they are just jokes, people need to lighten up and not take these things so seriously.
