Virgin Media are raising their prices again. They are increasing some of their packages, and also removing their self-serve discount.

Information about the changes are available on this link: virginmedia.ie/change

The changes are coming into effect on 1st January 2018. Virgin Media said they will be sending Emails or letters to all customers affected by the changes.

Any customers affected should be able to cancel their contract without penalty.

Id say people with snazzy new phones get to opt out of the contract and keep phone.

Could I hypothetically buy a contract now and then cancel it once the price increases are coming in?

Which other providers deliver broadband over cable?

Their Horizon box is a disgrace. The thing is the slowest piece of **** I've ever had the pleasure of paying for. Apart from Sky losing signal in severe weather the odd time I've never had an issue. In fact, I don't remember any issues with UPC's first box that could record or the older Pace boxes.

It's laughable that they even passed any sort of testing and now the price is going up. Fortunately I'm not paying for TV as I have the bundle which is €5 cheaper than broadband alone but once the year is up I'll be ditching the TV all together.

So I guess if there’s no self service “discount” I can deselect it and get paper billing and some use of the extra €3.51 that will go onto my monthly bill....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

No bargains with the cancellation department anyway. €15 off x6 on a €90 bill was all I could get. Feck that, cancelled.

I agree, their horizon box is a disgrace... slow, choppy,, aweful platform..

ill be cancelling no doubt... I may wanna keep the broadband thought, as I'm not sure if I can get sky in the apartment without a phone line?

can I cancel my contract as it is now, and take out a new broadband contract with them ?

Yeah, the days of half price for 6mths are a thing of the past. They know well that their internet is light years ahead of the competition for high users but as soon as I can, I’m getting out. A 40-60mb co. Ection with a competitor will do me fine. Landline is never used so no advantage for my household. And I’ll go enigma and FTA for TV with recording facility. Funny really, if the box was a patch on the sky offering I’d probably stay but that horizon offering is painfully laggy. A real annoyance for me. Recording 5 things at once. Meh. Who really cares when the fundamentals are so poor.

Sky sports for 1 euro per month was a pretty good deal! Pity the horizon box is such a piece of ****, their broadband is good apart from it being down 3/4 times a month.

Had the same issue with UPC though. It's a joke what you pay for crappy internet.

Unless you're an existing customer getting a loyalty discount then you won't be affected given they've announced it before you sign up. It would be fraudulent to give you a set price plan knowing that they would then put the price after.

Will cancel and open a new account under girlfriend's name for broadband/phone only. i've got no option but Virgin where i live but agree that the TV offering and set-top box just arent worth the premium they're charging. The broadband is pretty good though, in all fairness. expensive but good.

when do we need to cancel by? after we receive the letter we have 30 days right?

It's a question of needs I suppose. 360mb from VM is by far the best domestic service available. That said, it's overkill for the vast majority of users. As an example, my parents have Vodafone for €35 per month and it has been bullet proof for the last year. I would easily get 60mb over wifi on the iphone which would be more than sufficient for my needs (and most of the population I would wager).

Again, their (VM) TV package and particularly the horizon box is very poor IMO. Their internet is without doubt their lifeline. Technically, I'm not sure as to the capabilities of the non-coaxial providers (basically every other supplier) in terms of how much they can provide but I'd imagine that the advertised 100mb fibre would not be that common in terms of actual dl speeds and is probably the best these providers can offer. I had 360mb, reduced to 240mb, moved off TV MAX to the next level down and reduced the phone from anytime world to the lower tier as it's never used in my place. I just went from over €90 p/mth to €65 (€50 for 6 months) yesterday. Again, 240mb is way more than I need as I do not download anything any more.

    Eh yes you can.

There is no guarantee though that Virgin will increase your specific contract fees in January (even though they might hike the fees for others).
So you could be stuck with a contract for a long time that you weren't expecting.

Christ almighty. Do you honestly think Virgin are this stupid? Anyone signing up now will be agreeing to the new T&Cs.

It has happened with plenty of companies before, most notably three.

I know someone who took out a 24 month contract on a paid phone and was able to cancel the contract and keep the phone less than 2 months later.

Did they take out the contract before or after the pending price increases were announced?

If I was to switch to sky for tv and broadband, what is the story with the setup process? We have a telephone point in the hall that is covered up, do they use this as in, run a cable from the telephone point to the tv points inside the house? Or can you get their setup and not have to use the telephone point at all?
Also, would I have to put a dish up too?

They are literally the only decent option for Broadband, I couldn't move. €50 a month I pay them for phone and broadband, never an issue.

is there much delay when say cancelling and putting dif name to sign back up ? since feel feed up with the way they extend contract by full year by those little increases basically locking you in.

yes their service is amazing as you say rob316 and in 5 years only minor glitches with usually resolve in hours and promt responses, but recent stats show they have 1mill users that's almost 3rd of irelands market and they seem to use this to full advantage, as fiber roll out is still decade away to many places at a pace its going.

    How can you be 100%?

I have broken a contract after 5 months after a previous price increase without penalty.

If you couldn't break the contract after a price increase, what would stop virgin getting you to sign the contract for a low price and then doubling the price 1 month later ?

they did it last year thou when everyone got deals,3 weeks later it came back with email of 1e smth increase and was used to extend contract as they knew people wont budge out of the deals they got.So yes could be wrong but thats what they done last time,as they were aware no one will budge out of the deals they got.

has anyone had any joy calling the loyalty dept and negotiating 1/2 price deals to stay?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,671 ✭✭✭jay0109

Loyalty deals are as good as gone. I've been with them 10+ years and best I could get recently was 3 months 1/2 price.
So I've downgraded (lowering bband speed and dropping 50 channels) my package and basically got a new customer offer. But it's still going to work out at 10% more than what I paid in the previous 12 months:mad:

And I asked for free sports for 2 months which they always threw in upon renewal. Not this time...I could get 1/2 price sports and movies for 3 months for €30 per month (extra €5 for HD sports). I said no thanks.

It's an absolute rip-off now but the rest are just as bad. And yet we have no inflation in Ireland!

sounds very much as draw of luck, month back they barely offered anything 15e discount or 3mo half price, guess its down who one gets on the phone and if the emails are true so the more cancels the more chance of getting deals.

but dont imagine VM budging unless one is on full bundle to offer anything past 6 months, do know few people that managed it last year but id say they have some negotiation skills to pull if off.

I'm going to be moving soon and that would mean me cancelling or moving my Virgin contract to new abode. What would my options with them be like if I get my girlfriend to sign up as new customer in her name? Bearing in mind I'd have the box, remote and modem, would they not factor this and charge for new goods again?

Just rang them there (Broadband only)

Self Service discount of €3.50 expiring in Jan, and my contract is up in Dec so didn't push the usual "I'm leaving"

Actually unsure of what to do. Can I cancel when I get my letter? and then push for a deal?

does anyone know if there is a thread for a free/once off payment alternative to virginmedia if we cancel our contract.

I have the full package myself but want to cut costs. If i can cancel my contract and try get a deal on the broadband only (for netflix) then find a way to get the uk and irish tv channels by satellite or saorview etc without any further costs would be ideal.

Can somone point me to a thread for cutting the cord if you will please? I couldnt see any thread and just thought maybe someone has done similar in the past? Thanks.

FTA satellite for UK and saorview for irish channels gives you plenty of variety. All the IE/UK channels in perfect quality. Dish, Antenna, combo box and ancillaries. Easily done, once off payment, and you're sorted.

Just leaves you with the internet to decide on in terms of provider.

Having the equipment will not matter. They still own it and may ask for it back via collection at their expense. If they do not collect, it's of no use to you anyway.

Eitherway, even if they do not collect, it will be of no financial advantage to you in terms of future contracts.

They’ll start charging extra for paper bills soon, wait you see!

Did the Self Service Discount include paying by Direct Debit?

I don’t feel the same love out of VM that I kinda of found with UPC. Fair enough both companies are/were for profit but at least UPC didn’t make it obvious, VM just don’t like giving the customer too much now, might get €20 off for 3 months or something, UPC used to give 9 months half price.

Will be downgrading my contract with them, get rid of tv package, stick with just BB, would get rid of the landline if it saved me money, don’t use it anyways. It’s like VM just doesn’t even pretend to care about their customers like UPC used to, kinda annoying.
