The first one is The Top 100 Irish Cover Versions. The second is the Top 100 Cover Versions. The Playback for the first one is within that link.

Good spot. I see a lot of overlap in the lists!

Another old 2FM name to be on RTE Gold - John Kenny is covering for Will Leahy on breakfast next week (Tuesday I think).

Should be interesting - John playing "pop" music again (Rock / Indie is his usual genre) !!

Will referenced the excitement this would cause among the anoraks this morning

Good news to hear about John Kenny, they usually used to get Al Dunne. As an aside, has there been any change to the presentation of the Ronan Collins slot? Does it still sound voice tracked? Only just listened to the show once in bits and pieces since it first started.

Ronan’s still prerecorded. It’s ok for what it is if you just have it on as background while working or whatever but no listener interaction.

I have just started playing back some of John Kenny's show, while I work. He was on top form. I just noticed the playlist. That is an impressive selection of songs with only a few "skippers".

Edit: Just after Seasick Steve there was some kind of problem with their music machine and John threw in two extra songs before it was fixed: China Grove by The Doobie Brothers and Riders on the Storm by The Doors. Nice one John!

Yes, brilliant radio station, I listen to it most of the time!

Check out John Connolly's ABC to XTC. That is quite different from the rest of the station's schedule.

Doesn’t say what track they played from each album though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,727 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

Quite the opposite! It lists the names of the tracks played but not the albums they are from! I like the spread of different albums represented in this countdown. In most cases, they went for the obvious songs from the albums. My main gripe, though, is that they were inclined to play the single version of songs where the album version is different. But overall, it was quite good, even allowing for the fact that I never like everything!

I wonder do many of Ronan Collins Radio 1 listeners tune into his show on RTE Gold ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 819 ✭✭✭alzer100

I don't thinks so, but I could be wrong. Jesus though his links are extremely stale, they really just consist of what has been played over the past 15/20 minutes. There is absolutely zero listener interaction. Such a contrast compared to when Rick O'Shea follows at 1pm.

Isn't Ronan Collins show pre recorded? That would explain the zero listener interaction.

With current events regarding Ms Forbes and Co. Would you say that folks involved with RTE Gold have their tongues firmly pleased in their cheeks?

My point being that Dee Forbes attempted to close this radio station whilst at the same time there was somewhat unscrupulous accounting procedures being carried out to disguise that Ryan Tubridy (and possibly others) were receiving more money than was publicly stated.

Look, it can't be denied that RTE is a gravy train but Gold is an incredibly popular service. It does have a very limited number of staff in which I don't think their salaries are anyway on par with the folks down the hall in RTE Radio 1. Ronan Collins is RTE staff, his show is prerecorded but at least they are getting something out of him.

I, for one am glad that RTE Gold survived Dee Forbes time as DG.

TBH I think the bould Dee was flying a kite talking about canning Gold. Kind of an opening gambit. We have to chop services. Gold for instance. We’re closing that. Now, see, we’re broke. Give us money. I’ll be with you in a minute Ryan!! I’m glad it survived. I’m hopeful too now too the fat will be cut and tgere’ll be more money available to keep services like this going and maybe launch a few new ones.

Interesting to see what RTÉ Gold costs to run 24 hours a day.....

While i like Gold, it's abit like the seanad for DJs who weren't good enough but here's a handy number for you anyway.

Just imagine Ryan Tubridy, "The more money. I mean more music drive" 4pm to 7pm on Gold.

Bit unfair on Will, Rick, Aidan and Mickey Mac in particular

Decent station but hardly justified in the current state of RTE, will leahy and rick o shea on generous contracts from their 2fm glory days, now getting paid the same to be on a station that has never sold an ad or sponsorship
