Thank you all for your answers - Both internet radio and their websites working fine today so it must have been a temporary glitch.

Never listened to Gold before but I am going to give it a run. Like the sound of the music they are supposed to play, plus Rick o'shea and Will Leahy have moved to there now from RTE 2FM and I like them

Yes, RTE Gold and Radio Nova would be my go to stations for music, really enjoy their output. Andy, have you tried Nova yet, they’re also on t’internet?

No not yet I will give it a try soon. What genre of music do they normally play is it rock?

It's very varied. Yesterday morning they played Whitesnake Is This Love followed by Sammie Davis Junior doing Candyman. Can't say I've ever heard that combination before.

haha , that seems strange - does seem a strange mix, Is it one of these 'request' type stations. If so that would explain. to keep their listeners happy most of the time they have to play their request

RTE Gold has been playing a very random and varied mix of songs since it started in around 2007.

    The way radio should be.

Blimey, imagine that its been going for 10 years and I have only just known about it the other day. And thats only because 2 2FM presenters are moving over to it

Andy, there are a couple of points I want to make in relation to all the posts above.

    (a) Radio Nova
    1. Radio Nova won the competition for the classic rock licence, which covers Dublin and its commuter belt, i.e. Kildare, Meath, north Wicklow and south Louth. It has been broadcasting since 2010.

    2. It is true that it has been stretching its playlist and definition of classic rock over time, but I am surprised to hear about Sammy Davis Junior.

    3. It is not a general music request radio station, but it does take requests for rock music. There are also a few specialist shows over the weekend.

    4. By the way, you should have a look at the thread about Radio Nova on this page. Also, you could also check out their website if interested.

    (b) RTE Gold
    1. As the poster said, it's been around since 2007. It is one of a number of RTE Digital stations. They are all available on the Virgin Media's digital radio selection on their digital tv box.

    2. Initially, this was largely automated but over the last couple of years there has been an increase in presenters, many of whom had 2FM connections.

    3. In the last year, Radio 1 has been broadcasting RTE Gold in the early hours.

    4. If you do a search through this radio forum, you will find plenty of threads and posts about RTE Gold.

Is the Gold studio in Limerick, think Will Leahy said he was broadcasting from there?

There is the RTE studio in Limerick used for micky mac, lorcan murray and will's shows on Gold

The others shows are done in donnybrook

I heard larry gogan interviewing Rick O'Shea last week and rick said to larry "you see that wall over there - past that wall I will be broadcasting from there in the RTE Gold studio" - so i presum its in Donnybrook

Oops my mistake, the Whitesnake - SDJ reference was to Gold, not Nova. Can't see Nova playing SDJ.

I've started listening to Gold in the mornings as there's no other decent option until PK comes on. It's very varied and with no DJs at that time a welcome break from the usual inane breakfast show 'banter.'

Well in two weeks time that's going to change when the will Leahy breakfast show starts

Yep, and Tipp FM and Clare FM as well. Him, Will and Lorcan must all be from Limerick. In my thread about a hypothetical Nova South West, I have Will and Mickey named as potential DJs on the imagined station.

"Now... Mickey Mac. With the most music, guaranteed.
    Nova Sooouth Weeeeeeeeest!!"

Small question will JJ Hartigan be involved in Will Leahy's new breakfast show or is he staying with 2FM?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,670 ✭✭✭MikeyTaylor

JJ on 2FM bank holiday drive today as is the case most of the time. I wonder will he be involved in Will Leahy's new show, I understand he works across RTÉ not just on 2FM.

Looking like that. I can’t imagine him doing a full office day after a early breakfast morning start.

RTÉ gold in my opinion has been destroyed by adding more dj’s
It was nice when it was clutter free music
They should have left it Larry Gogan only

Next it will be full of ad breaks

Will the new programmes REALLY be live or pre-recorded? Or is it just for the first day or week?

Has there ever been a live programme so far on GOLD?

I imagine it’ll be live they’re really pushing the gold brand now.

They should really be going the whole hog tomorrow and launching a full schedule, The radio centre is full of idle djs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,220 ✭✭✭Schorpio

Just listening to Will's new breakfast show this morning. I like it tbh - I was worried that the DJ's would mess up the 'clutter-free' Gold music, but actually it's the ads that cause the clutter. Rick O'Shea in the studio too.

    Jesus ,he talks a lot.
Now, an hour of 80's every morning from 9 to 10.

    Anyway, it's all bull****.
RTE, loosing a fortune, is now developing yet another station with two well paid presenters who are not wanted elsewhere or do not want to do anything else in the company.

If I was the owner of an independent franchise, I'd be roaring down the phone to the BAI to tell these clowns at RTE leave this type of broadcasting to the private sector.

I don't think he got off to a bad start. If I wanted no talk I'd just listen to my own playlist or Spotify. Could be enough to move me off Nova altogether.

Leave what type of broadcasting to the private sector? Ad-free? If I was the BAI I'd tell you that you have every right to broadcast your own content and let the market decide which is better.

I completely agree, personalities at RTE are overpaid, but this isn't the thread for that discussion.

Personally I think it was alright this morning, especially considering that it was the first show, and I'm glad there is a push to build up Gold's audience. Most people I know of with DAB radios in DAB areas never use it. I just hope that is the numbers tuning in do start to rise, that we don't see advertising introduced, but we'll have to wait and see.
