Landers is a great fella. That all Ireland speech he made in 1999 was as pure Cork as it gets!

And he played a great game in the final too in fairness.

You do realise you come across as very condescending with your "sunshine". Blagging on about how much Munsters and All Irelands won reminds me of a small schoolboy attitude - my Daddy has more money than yours. If you want numbers Cork with a population of over half a million should be winning every few years. Ye have totally underachieved and not just in the last 20 years. Kilkenny with a fifth of the population have more All Irelands. By the way I played senior club in Limerick for 10 years so have played plenty of sport.

What time does the team bus head for Croke Park? And also any good place to bring kids to see bus passing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,888 ✭✭✭Seadin

Limerick won nothing before 2018. Explain that? Bottled every All Ireland they were in and were beaten in most of them before they ever played. Don't worry about Cork. They will be back sooner rather than later. Worry about Limerick and what is the future when these current panel of players go off the radar.

Sometimes you need to fall over the line which we did in 2018. Not good enough in 2007, 96 or 80. Did leave Offaly 94 after us. Don't be so critical of teams trying for ages - before Clare 95 how long was it. Or Waterford now. What would Mayo give to fall over the line in football. Despite not winning an All Ireland the players gave it their all for years and kept coming back. You should admire and respect their resilence- not belittle them. Limerick win a few since 2018 and then all of a sudden its JP,funding and physical Limerick. It strikes me a pure jealousy. Surely a competitive Limerick ( and Clare Tipp Waterford ) is good for Cork. As a partizan Limerick fan I would like us to win but its good to spread it around. Look at the lift football got when perennial winners Dublin and then Kerry got knocked out.

@King Power Fox Ye were nobodies until the JP money came along. Go and troll somewhere else. Hurling was not invented in 2018.

Before 18 we had 20 Munster titles. There was always strong hurling teams in Limerick. We never claimed to have invented hurling in 2018. We have enjoyed the past few years and hopefully it will encourage future teams. Nothing is guaranteed but with the right structures and preparation in place we can be hopeful.

We are trying but a Limerick fan seems to be upset that i don't think hurling started in 2018!

Limerick will be there or thereabouts next year as well. Have you seen some of their players waiting to come through? There's no guarantee Cork or Clare will get out of Munster, let alone near an AI final. I'd be making hay while the sun shines this year TBPHWY.

Limerick had a bad run of it before this current crop, and I wouldn't have begrudged them a fifth, they have been fantastic to watch. But go back a few years and Tipp had a bad run, and it's been 20 years since Cork won a senior AI, so being in the wilderness can creep up on you. Plenty of folks on here were looking for Pat Ryan's replacement after 2 championship games this year, if that happened and we ended up with another tippy tappy manager we'd be in the wilderness for another 20. Guaranteed. Cork have a small window of opportunity to use the recent excellent talent from the winning AI minor and U20s, with the manager who knows them best, they have 1 or 2 more players to get on the senior panel but that's probably it. We were tame enough looking going down against Tipp this year in the U20s so you have to factor that in as well. So try and get the job done this year as you may not get the chance next year.

I think this current crop of players have the potential to win a couple of all Irelands for Cork. For now though i'd settle for breaking the almost twenty year drought on Sunday.

All Irelands are a lot harder to win imo since the round robin format came in. In 1999 we only played four games to win the all Ireland.

We've had to play eight games to get to the final this year! Clare are a good team but if this team strikes form like it did against Limerick, then we're going to win. I'm certainly expecting a cracker of a game here!

Seven but I get your point. So did Clare by the way. Good luck to the Cork ladies on Saturday as well and to everyone travelling.

To play devils advocate, it wasn’t too long ago that two championship losses (nor mind the first two games) ensured you couldn’t win it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,307 ✭✭✭Straight Talker

We lost a lot of excitement with regards to the early championship fixtures, with the abolishment of the instant knockout format.

Obviously it had to go, but i still have a lot of nostalgia for those days. Look at our game with Waterford in 1999 for example.

That was their best team since the late 50's/early 60's. They probably should've been in the all Ireland final the previous year, but they completely seized up against a mediocre Kilkenny team.

It was the day JBM gave six players their championship debuts. Lose and our year is over but we won and we all know what happened afterwards!

Still though it wasn't fair that teams only had one or two championship games a year at most. Parachuting Galway into the all Ireland semi finals every year back then was crazy as well!

Yeah correct it's eight if you include the final. The point is you need a strong and deep panel nowadays. Back then you could get away with having a strong starting fifteen and the two or three decent subs.

Of course back then relying on us just being Cork alone was enough to win an all Ireland. It's a different ball game now though. We have to reestablish our right to be feared hopefully starting on Sunday!

What your favourite Cork v Clare memories? The 1999 Munster Final, 2005 all Ireland semi final and that first round Munster championship game in 2003 are mine. All going well i can add this Sunday to the list as well.

This game was a fairly run of the mill win by us but the semplegate incident in 2007 was memorable as well! That was all one big commotion over nothing imo!

I'd love to see the real traditional Cork hurling played on Sunday. Just keep the ball moving directly and quickly. We probably haven't been feared as a consistent goal scoring team since the days of Tomas Mulcahy, Kevin Hennessy and John Fitzgibbon though.

I think our last great team back in the early to mid 00's was more happy to outpoint the opposition. As long as we win it that's the main thing, but i'd love to see someone be our John Fitzgibbon this Sunday. We'll have our moments of dominance and so will Clare. Whichever team makes the most out of that moment when they're on top will win.

I was there in 2005. Group of Clare guys directly in front of us were rubbing scores in for large parts of the game but went very quiet towards the end. That and the 2007 semi against Waterford are two games that stuck with me for atmosphere and one point wins.

Worst moments were the last minute goal in the football in 1997 and last minute point in the 2013 hurling final to equalize. Whether we deserved it or not is another question!

It’s hard to explain but my favourite moment was Nash’s free in 2013 (might have been the replay). There was some anticipation and it was badly needed to keep cork in the game. With the rule changes, it’s not really something I think I’ll get to experience it again. I’ll forget a lot of cork moments but don’t think I’ll forget that.

2005 all-ireland semi final, no doubt!

Was it nine points down cork were?

Massive calls on the line to take off Ronan Curran and Brian Corcoran.

But they were absolutely correct. Gardiner went to centre back and played a stormer! Niall Ronan (I think) came on and ran Lohan around the pitch.

Seanie McMahon forced a line ball in 1995 with a broken collar bone, Baker put the ball in the next play, and Frank Lohan made a last ditch hook to save the game… that day changed Clare's hurling history.. Cork wouldn't beat Clare for about 5 years after that.

'99, I was at the wrong end of the Old Stand to see who scored the goal and saw the crowd go wild first. We had our American cousins over for their first hurling match. Ben O'Connor down the wing then for the insurance point, great day.

That was the day that about 150k clare fans swear they were in line with the ball that Joe Deane batted down for the ball and that it was wide and that an equal number of cork fans were also in line and swear it was still in!

Ollie Baker going off with an ankle injury swung the momentum back in cork's favour if I remember rightly and clare couldn't catch up after.

We came close enough in 1997! Ye did beat us in 1993 as well, although i put that defeat down to that League final when it took us three games to beat Wexford! That Clare teams journey started and finished with Cork imo. I think that 1999 Munster final was a passing of the torch moment, and we then took over Munster again for a couple of years along with Waterford as well.

I remember Clare missing a free at a crucial stage as well. I think it might have been David Forde who missed it. We drove on for home after that i think, and of course there was that Ben O'Connor point from way out in the sideline to seal the deal!

Really hope they do it at the weekend. Cork hurling needs it. Would be a fairytale story if they did it after starting the season so poor.
