the hand pump works great i have had one for three years now and it even pumps a motorbike tyre. those 'jump-start battery packs' on the other hand won't start a honda 50 never mind a car. The LED light sets are another excellent buy.

I've been waiting for Lidl to get in the nice cycling backpack they had in the UK stores last month but no sign of it. My previous Lidl bag is falling apart.

the Lidl and Aldi cycling stuff has never returned to the quantity / quality you got pre-covid. Back then they seemed to have a cycling special every few weeks between them, with a large range of products. Granted, there was a lot of low quality stuff too, but still, it was great for picking up small bits.

Honestly get yourself to an auto parts store and buy a big 5l bottle of car shampoo. The best and cheapest bike cleaner you'll own. You can also use washing up liquid. Modern ones don't have the salt concentrate nor type the older ones used to. Liquid these days doesn't have the type of salt that damages paint on a frame.

for degreasing, you cannot beat the 'elbow grease' degreaser; i get it in mr.price but i've seen it elsewhere too. it's powerful stuff - was able to clean the filter on our cooker hood in jig time where washing up liquid was near pointless.

+1 on this, does a great job on the chain and cassette and is really cheap (1.50 in Dealz). I note Lidl have their own version, which I haven't tried but assume is basically the same stuff.

I'd say it's probably one of those 'slime' filled tubes, they're fairly useless, they never seal properly

I'm assuming those chains are pretty pointless, just a 5-second delay?

If I were a betting man I would assume the same. Hard to see how you could manufacture a strong chain at that price.

I guess you could buy 10 of them but then you would also need the pannier bag to carry them!

Is it just me or did Lidl and Aldi have much better and much more regular Specials pre-Covid? I've pretty much given up looking out for them, whereas a few summers back one or the other of them seemed to have a cycling offer every few weeks from Spring through Summer.

Maybe its old age and crankiness.

TBH for anyone just starting cycling looking for cheap gear, I'd direct them towards Decathlon rather than waiting for Lidl/Aldi specials. They're handy for lights and some consumables like oil and cleaning stuff, but their clothing, tools, locks etc are mostly rubbish.

one of the best value (€29.99??) pieces of cycling kit I've bought were Lidl's cycling shoes (SPD) lasted me nearly 10 yrs ? for commuting. granted the whole sole would detach in the latter years but a few drops of superglue 2-3 times a yr kept them going….

Perhaps 10-15 years ago Lidl had an aluminium road bike with Shimano 105 appartus. It got so much grief from this area that if it was their only feedback I wouldn't be surprised if they had left the country.

Any Boards cyclist with a long term experience of it? Just curious.

    I suppose there's two elements to that post;

    1. Convenience: Agreed - as mentioned I've given up on Lidl/ Aldi and only a couple of weeks ago popped into Decathlon in town to pick up a spare safety light. I'd seen equivalent lights advertised in Lidl/ Aldi recently but they never showed up in store. That's been a recurring theme since Covid.
    2. Quality: for a lot of things I've found Lidl/ Aldi to give the best bang-for-buck compared not only to Decathlon but even big brands - Leyzyne for example. But this is mainly in areas like lights, cleaning products, bike stands etc. One version of their lights is pound for pound probably the best bit of kit I've ever bought. Agreed re clothing though - it's a false economy there and much better value to be found in Decathlon or online (Galibier etc).

It's just that they used to be a great, reliable source of bits and bobs that were genuinely very good value. And the big attraction being that they were much more 'local' than Decathlon for most people.

Another vote for Decathlon here. They've upped their game in cycling as a supported sport since getting into the World Tour I feel.

The website isn't brilliant though, and stock in stores often doesn't match up with the website either - which can be frustrating.

on the flipside, the last couple of times i've been in the store, they've been reasonably low on spares stock.

I would agree with most of that. However, I would say Lidl and Aldi supply lines have taken the hit post Brexit really. I assume we're lumped in with the UK, and then some things are problematic on into the EU.

I'm always underwhelmed by the Irish decathlon stores tbh, despite it being a "must do" when we're in France!
