So when are you to old for a computer console  PS4 , x-box or whatever ?
Iv been recently thinking of buying myself a ps4 its been years since iv owned a console maybe 10 years, I'm 35 now am I to old ? I think i'm going to get one regardless but id love to know what the good folks of after hours think on the matter,
I know you can do what you like but do people stop playing as they age ?
Is there an age cut off or do the folks on here still play into there 30's and 40's and when they have kids ?

There's no age cut off, play the PlayStation or play with yourself.

You're too old when you think you are.

I've a PS3 that I rarely turn on anymore, but if I had time I'd be playing and probably upgrade to the PS4.

My boy recently got an XBox so I've been enjoying playing that a bit now, but again, rarely have the time.

MOD Moved to Gaming (General) as you will get better responses there, just remember the charter from there applies now.

I'm 32 and have recently gone back playing with my SNES, which I got at the age of 8! You're never too old.

Although if you don't like getting the bollocks bet off you by a 10 year old at FIFA, maybe buy a set of Golf clubs instead.

Each to their own but personally i see it the same way as watching movies...as you get older your taste in movies may change , and you might just watch one on the tv every now and then instead of hitting the cinema every weekend but I dont think anyone is too old to watch movies...and i dont think anyone's ever too old to game.

Hey im mid 30's and still gaming away, have most consoles at this stage. Oh and I have 2 kids.

I'm roughly the same age. I have always had something on the go. They don't tend to get much use during the summer when fishing is king. Once it gets too cold the headphones go on and it's all systems go.

I have no kids or anything though so it's either that or sit around listening to my mot watching endless Karadashians.

There is no age cut off, I dont own one myself anymore and haven't for years.

I do however think it is pretty pathetic when men / woman past there teenage years completely immerse themselves in the online video game world, spending hours upon hours playing games with online "friends" and ignoring there real lives.

Everything in moderation though, just not my cup of tea.

Well its the same as sitting on front of the TV for hours upon hours watching reality bullcrap. The only difference is Video Games are interactive and actually help your brain instead of destroying it ;)

I'll be 40 in a few months. Still love me gaming. Have a mate in his 50's who also loves gaming. Don't think there is an age limit on it!

Mid 30's myself and have no intention of ever stopping gaming - been a gamer since I was a child and I'll still be blasting noobs when I'm 60 :D

Nearly 40 and I'd play maybe 5-10 hours a week if I get the chance. I couldn't give two figs if people think I'm too old to play. I enjoy it and I find it a great way to unwind. Some cracking games out there and if you're getting back into gaming after a lengthy break, you'll be bowled over by the PS4 or XboxOne.

I don't play multiplayer games as it doesn't appeal to me but I'm not going to call people pathetic for doing it. Considering a lot of people's 'real lives' involves them just sitting on their arses, binge watching shíte on TV while scrolling through their facebook feed on the phone glued to their hands. If they enjoy playing with their online friends, leave them off.

Gaming in general is not my cup of tea, people spending hours and hours and hours continuously gaming and neglecting their real lives is pathetic IMO.

No age limit. If anything the gaming industry has overtaken movies as a source of entertainment.

I regularly play games with my mates, we all live in different places now so it's a good way to keep in touch and show the younger wans how it's done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,997 ✭✭✭Mr.Saturn

    Thought it was funny, considering....
The average gamer is 35 years old and 72 percent are age 18 or older.

    http://www.theesa.com/about-esa/industry-facts/

Thought the days of gaming age-caps and other such notions died when Sony built the Playstation brand on the back of "hey, it's gaming, but for grown ups."

I know what you mean, people sitting around reading books, pretending they're somewhere they're not and neglecting their lives is kinda sad too.

Don't forget all those folks watching movies and tv shows about fictional people that don't even exist.

    But what is "too much"?
I live a healthy life, but I'll happily spend 5-6 hours after work, a few days a week, in training mode for Tekken, or practicing my aim in Overwatch.
    I'm 31.

Do you think people that you have never met, talking in your ear are really your friends? (honest question btw).

Im 42,have a ps4 pro,and recently bought a gaming laptop for Pubg among other games..

Id play a few times a week for an hour or 2 at time. No intention of giving it up at all..

I think the only pathetic thing is judging how other people spend their spare time..

Of course not. Nobody said anything about friends. Being social doesn't mean everyone you talk to are your friends.

But likewise do you think everyone you play rugby with (or against) are your friends? How about everyone you talk to on a night out in a pub?

Do you cycle in a pack or on your own?

Why call something pathetic when it has no bearing on your life whatsoever?

I enjoy gaming because it's like watching a movie or reading a book except I have control of the character. It's a really nice way for me to unwind for a few hours every few evenings. I can shut my brain off from work and all the other stresses in my life.

Personally, I can think of nothing worse than spending an evening cycling- I think it's super boring but I would never call anyone who enjoys it "pathetic" for enjoying it. Likewise folks who like to spend the evening talking ****e in a pub. Each to their own.

Well its a normal as sitting vegging out on front of the TV. There is a major social setting in todays gaming that wasnt there 10 years ago. You can game with real life friends and total strangers who can become friends.

Before we get carried away here I think davo2001 has a valid point. He isn't talking about all people that play games just the ones that play games to an anti social degree.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,512 ✭✭✭baby and crumble

Fair point, I just think the way it was phrased was a bit "all gamers are pathetic". Bound to ruffle some feathers on a gaming board!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,535 ✭✭✭joe123

Theres a big difference from neglecting real life to spending a few hours gaming. Its akin to someone asking whats your favourite TV show and then someone replying with they are destroying their life watching TV all day.

If someone wants to act like that, they can fund that lifestyle themselves and they're not affecting anyone else, it's their prerogative imo. Wouldn't have any interest in that lifestyle myself but if that's what makes you happy, knock yourself out.

Moderation is key of course. I'm 34 and play games, watch TV, read books, go to the pub, cycle, run, go on holidays etc.

I love games although it is hard to find the time these days. I would play maybe 7-8 hrs max per week. Don't think I'll ever give up gaming at this stage. Even if new generations of consoles are not my thing there are tons and tons of older games out there.

Gaming is such brilliant escapism from the ever day world.

A lot of older gen people have spent a lot of time coming home and plonking themselves in front of a TV for 5 hours a night. I dont see why a bone isnt picked about this. End of the day gaming is more social, challenges you more and keeps your brain healthy. Of course moderation is always needed.

What do you do after a hard days work?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,168 ✭✭✭Grahamer666

Eh. I'm 44 and still game. I've always had some sort of computer since I was a nipper. I'd much prefer to play video games than watch mind numbing reality tv or talent shows that a lot of people do. I don't game for hours and hours a day but still enjoy it a lot.

I play games, more than most people here by the sounds of it. Couldnt care less what other people think of the habit, certain types of people always have and always will look down on gaming. Its like they think there hobby is somehow more valid than gaming. Each to their own i say. Other than my one week holidays a year its my main way to relax.

Ive a close group of friends ive had since childhood, see most of them every week or two. Also most of them game with me,well 3/4's of them anyway. Ive a shift work job which means ive plenty of time to myself at unsociable hours which is probably why i game so much. My girlfriend couldnt give too ****'s about me playing games either. I watch about 4/5 hrs of TV a week with her,the usual stuff,GoT's Walking Dead etc. We go to the cinema about twice a month too. Im perfectly happy at 34 years old to do this,if anyone has an issue with that its their problem not mine:)

Not really. It's like someone asking a question in the alcohol forum about a certain type of beer and someone coming along and saying "It's pathetic the problem with drink we have in this country, it destroys families".

The thread is about someone looking to get back into an interest they've lost touch with....and one of the first comments is some weird veiled grievance with adults into video games, a perfectly normal past time.

No need to try and dress it up or justify it with "in moderation".....that's true of literally everything in life, not just video games, so it's pretty bizarre rationale for an opening post which basically came out swinging at grown ups who enjoy video games.

Why would anyone care what devo2001 thinks about your gaming habits? Why would you (OP) need to ask an internet forum if you can buy a console or not? Normies calling us pathetic but they can't even make their own decisions without asking permission of total internet strangers.
