Just found this thread last night and read it all. You be from a stubborn breed. There are more C5's out there.

For a typical low-pressure turbodiesel family car, I don't think it matters really. People fit turbo timers to things like a Subaru WRX, not a 1.6 C5 :)

    Agreed.

A typical turbo timer idles a good few minutes... I idle not longer than a minute ;), but only if I am stopped at a motorway service station. Getting out of the motorway and driving through estate streets is enough to cool the thing down.

How long do you leave the turbo to settle before switching off lads?
Know of lads who shut off before the car even stops!!!

Lugging the engine - opening the throttle in too high a gear. Google it, you might be doing it...

Hmm... Possibly.. although I was under the impression that doing that was just gonna cause issues for the Dual Mass Flywheel (but then I'm no expert, perhaps that's what's wrong with my car? the 'big end' means nothing to me. I've no idea what it refers to!).

Although I do generally keep the car around 2.5k rpm when I'm pottering around. I try not to 'lug' it, but at the same time I don't generally go too high either. 3k rpm on the motorway (i think 7k rpm is the max on the C5).

My initial concern was that I could have used the money I spent on the engine, buying another C5, but my worry was the C5 I bought could just as quickly run into the same/similar issue. :o

Haven't really been in a car as nice as it to be honest.

Actually did a job (photography) in a Citroen dealer about 2 years ago, and was in all of their new display cars, and the C5 still seems to be miles ahead of their new stuff. It's a great car in my opinion.

Have drove Passat, A4 etc. and just didn't strike a chord with me like the C5 did. (I do like the Mondeo, though. If I switch from the C5 it'll likely be for a Mondeo).

If I won the lotto i'd probably still have a C5 as a daily driver. Dunno why i like it so much but it's just a great car in my opinion.

(edit: probably worth noting that i wouldn't be one for doing handbrake turns, or drag racing, or going to mondello park.. i just do a lot of driving, and comfort/smoothness and a nice dashboard were my top concerns). So 'horses for courses', as they say.

I literally made an account to comment to this thread.....

KKV is messing with my brain here lads, I've read the entire story and his latest post makes me question my life with cars as I know and love.

Kinda wanna try a C5 now, not going to lie :D

(For reals though, best of luck with the car, I'm rooting for you!)

With a budget of 3k you can buy a very good low mileage car, you'd be crazy to spend that much on an engine.

At which point though are you going to say enough is enough? That car must owe you a fortune now.
Whatever about it being a comfortable place to sit but you can't keep throwing good hard earnt cash at it.
What happens if in another few months the engine goes pop again? 3rd engine?

I’d say the garage are covering this one?

I was feeling sorry for you, but after that statement I'm starting to question your sanity.

You'd probably hate it. :P It's everything most people hate. Floats on the road, bouncy, french, etc.

Indeed they are. In fairness, they did say they'd stand over it for 12 months. That was only 6 months ago. I'd expect an engine to last many, many years, so I would have expected them to cover the cost of the bill anyway.

Thankfully they've been decent and not even mentioned money. They're not making it awkward or trying any old guilt-trip nonsense to get me to pay for it, which is good.

I'd still recommend them, as at least i know if it goes wrong, they'll stand over it.

Bet that's the last 12 month guarantee they offer on any engine :D

If you won the lotto you could at least get the 3.0 V6 ;)

If you have a 1.6 HDi it's the exact same engine! They do not have the best reputation, so threads like this are not totally unexpected. It's in all these cars too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_DLD_engine#DLD-416

I know someone else who is also down a car due to one of these engines failing in their Volvo (turbo-related catastrophe).

If you want a C5, go for the 2.0 HDi which are comparatively bulletproof. Or a petrol.

I had a 04 C5 in the 1.8 petrol, got the fan belt replaced and they neglected to replace the tensioner that was included with it and when it seized it tore quite a large piece off from the bottom of the engine to the top of the engine mount so that was the end of mine. Great service for the many years I had it and as you said very comfortable

I own a 2006 c4 , it was like brand new , head gasket went 2 months into owning it, was gutted , then it needed some other work , rods, thermostat , 2 tyres .

I bought car for 2000 and within 3 months I had poured another grand into it pulling my hair out..

I have to say I love car , it has air con, cruise control, rear sensors and I've driven it to wales twice in it and feels comfortable .

Mine is a petrol and I can say touch wood dispite everyone telling me to cut my losses I've owned car 3 years and no bother since,

Last nct I chucked it in before service to get fail list and it passed .

I had a bit of luck with it depending which way you look at it, a farmer drove down side of car and did 700 euros worth of cosmetic damage and he paid out and I just banked it.

I have a C5 2009, 1.6 diesel myself and I can honestly say that it's lovely to drive. It's like being on a couch with wheels.

I've had a good few problems with mine (I don't do much milage with it anymore due to moving close to work so this no doubt has an issue. It currently has a particle filter clogging issue)

If you get a good one then you're onto a winner.

I was in the first gen C5 many years ago and it was being driven at speed on a terrible quality country road with potholes etc. and I have to say, it was very comfortable. My own car at the time, a BMW 735i, wouldn't have had a hope to shield the people in the car from the potholes in the way the Citroen and its hydropneumatic suspension did it

It's funny but not a lot of people know, even in the motors forum, that Rolls-Royce at the top of their game in the 60s and 70s, actually used Citroen's system and paid them license fees. And the most comfortable Mercedes-Benz ever made, their top of the range W116 450SEL 6.9, also had it.

I've never heard of that program, any linky? Is it like wheeler dealers? They did a hydropneumatic Citroen once, can't remember which.

Initially @KKV decided, against many posters advising not to, to go with a reputable garage because of a warranty they give. And now they are fixing the car again as part of that agreement.

It is the only reasonable way to proceed from now, as the money has already been spent.

So an update of sorts would be that I was in touch today.

Now, amidst the phone call i had, i had a choppy reception, and I'm not overly clued into mechanics. So my description of the issue may not actually be accurate.

But my understanding is that they reckon my car is constantly regenerating (DPF) and this is causing wear on the engine. They reckon this is why the car is giving trouble of late (and I mentioned I'd to top up the oil twice since getting it back, he reckons this is why). He mentioned something about the crankshaft, I believe, too.. but what specifically, I do not know (as i say, choppy phone reception).

So the engine has been rebuilt again, is ready to go into the car (albeit not yet fitted). So the thought process I'm being approached with is that I could fix the DPF issue, which could cost the guts of a grand (presumably cleaning out the DPF altogether or somesuch) or I could delete the DPF, which I'm told is much more reasonable and is much more common than it should be (although you're not supposed to do it).

    Quick googling leads me here:

    https://cobyautos.ie/diesel-particulate-filter-dpf-services/dpf-removal-remapping/

And although there's a bit of a sale pitch slant to the content on the site, what their saying lines up with what I've been told and what it's been suggested I do.

I have heard of this before (bypassing the DPF), and I know it is very common (and I was going to get it done before, as it was recommended on here at the time, although obviously I never did do it in the end) but I just thought I'd post up here in the off-chance anyone here is clued in or has any advice in this regard.

Also, if I'm deleting the DPF, should I also remap the car? (i presume both are very similar things, but can I tweak the car to make it a bit tastier for overtaking etc. whilst im messing with it?)
