The Big Christmas 2020 game ol' 4K HDR.
What people do for their kids is their business. I imagine the vast, vast majority of people on here didn't wait until they were older to play cetain games or watch stuff like Robocop or Predator

    I was 13 or 14 when I saw Robocop.
I wasnt screaming and brain washed/damaged at the hand being shot to ribbons or the Acid covered guy.
I was blown away and frikkin delighted with it.

With 3 teens now I allow them to watch older stuff or play older stuff if I have watched/played it and think the certificate is rediculous.

When somebody makes a vague statement and/or observation and then says "discuss", I think that person should actually start the discussion instead of asking others to do it.

    Also smacks of homework question/assignment.

I posted a follow on. See above. It's not a homework question. My argument is that parents see games as "games" and ignore the certification guidance. These are not passive entertainment. They are much more immersive and addictive and viral. And are getting more and more realistic and all encompassing.

Good for you if it hasn't affected you.

But parents are under immense pressure to keep up and get these games for their kids and associated latest console, TVs etc at Christmas time.

    (Edit)
Ok, got that off my chest.

    Agreed.
Most parents havent got a clue that games have age serts for a reason.
they just have pacman in their brain.

Most parents [of teens] will have grown up with video games, they're not 70 yr olds with no clue, their kids would be in their 40's otherwise :D

I don't know why people have this thing where 'parent' = old clueless boomer

I see there's a game based TV series released on Netflix next month. Detention, based on the Taiwanese horror game of the same name. I've never played the game but have read it's good.

Game available on the PlayStation store for €10.99. Consider me interested.

Started playing GTA Online for the first time on the PS4 today (been playing it on the XB1 for a while).

Took a trip to the casino to spin the wheel, and on my first attempt I won the Overflod Autarch Super. It's a beast!

Horror in something like Resident Evil doesn't phase me in the slightest but certain sections in something cartoon-y like Hollow Knight gives me the shivers. Weird.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,853 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

I reckon that's because in the likes of RE, you're seeing every detail of what it is, whereas in Hollow Knight and Limbo, etc, it's minimal in design and your brain fills in the rest.

Then again, I don't play horror games at all these days, too much of a wuss!

    Good interview with Phil Spencer:

Blink and you'll miss it, but he was fairly confident we are going to see an Xbox App on TV's in the next 12 months

If I buy a Family Nintendo membership for my kids for their Switches, do I have to buy it for a specific region?

Seeing people getting 18 cert video games for their kids for Christmas. Eg Call of Duty. 4K HDR.

    Discuss.

I remember a disgruntled caller to Gerry Ryan's radio show post the release of GTA IV. She was giving it loads about how inappropriate it was for her young lad. A second caller tried to explain that it was 18 certified but the woman just couldn't get her head around it. It was hilarious.

    I genuinely don't know if I'd be enchanted or horrified walking around the place;

Every 5 or 6 years, a TV network tries to leverage gaming into a new show. Never thought on the why, but they almost never seem to take off; maybe it's just 'cos gamings primary home feels like it should be the internet, not older media like television.

Though it's very telling that RTÉ's first attempt at covering the medium and of course, aim the show squarly at kids. Cos only kids play video games, right?

Yeah that was my first thought. Lots of research and surveys have generally pitch the average age of a gamer today as somewhere in the mid 30s. Gaming overtook movies in terms of revenue some time ago now and they are a very major form of mainstream home entertainment.

Not sure who these TV execs are who still think they're kids toys. At least the article there spoke to someone like Brenda Romero who would know what she's talking about, so their might be a few inciteful moments on the show, but probably not many.

Go 8 Bit with Dara O'Brien has been the only TV show I can think of that treated games properly, but some terrible editing and a poor choice of guests at times let it down.

    That looks absolutely terrible.

I know some boardsies (or perhaps at this point former boardsies I dont know if they still post) worked on that show.

It looks like the kind of show that if I was a lot younger I'd probably enjoy. I mean I watched Bad Influence, Gamesmaster, Movies Games and Videos etc when I was younger religiously and they were all dreadful. :D

I did like Cybernet though, good format.

There are some really excellent YouTube channels that make this kind of stuff redundant. Scott the Woz is funny ; happy console gamer is exactly that ; there is an Irish guy who does really in-depth treatment of games: Matthewmatosis etc

RTE needs to somehow bridge to the new broadcasting age and get on board with the fans.

The boat has sailed with gaming shows on TV. You don't really see those kinda shows on TV anymore for movies or music and there are hundreds of online channels that preview/review content for those topics now. With Twitch and YouTube already out there kids have no interest in watching this stuff on TV anymore either.

While on the topic, man, Gamesmaster was ****ing epic back in the day.

Ah yeah, I loved the sardonic host and some of the competitions were gas. I watched every episode of it and it was a highlight of my week!

There is room for a good tv show about games. Gamesmaster got it right but that was mostly down to the chemistry of the hosts. Bad influence and movies games and videos was pretty much just show us the games which is all I really wanted from a videogames show.

I think something like consoleVania would work really well and the bbc spin off show was excellent but on a terrible time slot. The real issue is that tv execs won't deviate from the usual tv show format which would kill a show about videogames.

There is one videogame show that works brilliantly and its the best show on TV about videogames. It's gamecentre cx and I'd love to see the format aped in the west. It's basically a Japanese comedian is tasked with beating a rock hard old videogame before the last train leaves tokyo so the crew can get home. It's pretty much a let's paly but the shows host Arino would appeal to anyone instead of kids and sociopaths that like the usual twitch let's player.

IIRC Gamesmaster actually had competitions and little tournaments during the show - which genetically ain't that dissimilar to the Let's Plays that dominate YouTube and the gaming "broadcasting" space anyway. There's probably not a lot of bandwidth or interest to be gleaned from watching people talk about games. It's such an inherently participatory media, there's a lot lost without that interactive quality (of course, there's plenty of great YouTube channels that have folks "just" talking about games, but those are usually more documentary formats than weekly "blater" sessions)

Every time I hear Games Master now, I think of the story of how they have someone on dressed as a character from Mortal Kombat playing the game, and he got so hot in the costume that he actually passed out.
