Anyone bought their favourite food and have it suddenly taste like crap?

Yesterday, I bough some salt and vinegar Pringles from Spar for €2.50. I thought I'd be enjoying a good snack but... :(.

Well to be fair, at least I didn't find a rat in my crisps like some English guy did, but these crisps tasted completely stale. I thought it might have had to do with the Red Bull dulling my taste but even after coming back and trying them for two hours, they tasted like ****.

Today I bought some from Supervalu and compared with the ones in Spar. It wasn't just my imagination, they really were stale. I don't think this is the first time it's happened to me (and yes, it was the same flavor)

Anyone experienced this with Pringles or their other favorite foods?

Moros. I remember them being MUCH nicer.

    No. Never happened to me.

You just got a stale pack. You should have brought them back to the shop.

BBD or UBD were ok I assume.

Snax were the worst. From crisp classic to little miserable cardboard wafers.

There's a weird chemical element to them now too.

Do they still make Moros? Those Boost bars are the single edible thing Cadbury's produce these days.

Except Double Deckers, which have changed but are still tremendous.

So you're asking if anyone has ever purchased something that turned out to be stale? Yes, many people have, but with proper counseling they've gone on to live outwardly normal lives, though secretly they will bear the scars for the rest of their lives.

Stay strong, my friend. We are here for you.

Nothing tastes like it used to imo. Everything has been cheapened down, watered down, made smaller you name it. Glass bottles of milk years ago with the lovely creamy top, are now litres of watery píss. 50% extra anything they are just giving you back what they took out and are charging you more for.

I used to be gumming for a lovely cup of Barry's tea, well it's nothing but piddle now. Not bad enough to turn me into a Lyons woman or anything, let's not get crazy here. But I'm not one but impressed. A'tall a'tall.

As I child I was noshing into a bag of Snax and almost broke my teeth on a piece of plastic, completely coated in dust and masquerading as a crisp. Ever since I can't go near then.

What are those crispy pancakes called, they were savoury, forget the name. I loved them as a kid, had one recently and they were just awful, made me retch.

What happened to the crunchy bits on the outside of a Brunch.wouldn't bother buying them now and they used to be my favourite.

Yip, another classic ruined. No real milk at all in HB ice cream these days.

Monster Munch is another one. Used to be a spicy bag of pure happiness, especially licking the dust from the inside of the bag. Now these pale puffy things that taste of nothing.

I used to have breakfast in McDonalds years ago and happened upon a McD the other morning.
Went in and ordered what I remember ordering back then..

    It was disgusting :(

    That's it!

I was racking my brain thinking I had a big one of these experiences lately.

That was it. It's just...different. Just simply not as nice.

And it pisses me off, because I used to love them.

I’m old enough that I first tried Pringles when they first came out. All that was available was the single potato-like flavour at that point.

I didn’t understand the attraction, to be honest. I very much preferred the taste of ordinary crisps. Those of you who did prefer Pringles, can you say why? Was it the reduced level of unhealthy things like fat and salt?

I think they're actually called crispy pancakes lol

Monster Munch used to be unreal. Boring now, not nearly as spicy.

Whenever I see "New And Improved Recipe" I tend to roll my eyes because although it may be a new recipe, it sure as hell ain't improved.

I loathe seeing those words on the packaging of anything that I use to like.

Pringles can be hit and miss. Original (ready salted) are the only ones i've never noticed any change in flavour...mostly cos i rarely eat them. All others can be a lottery.

"Big Al's" products have changed for the worse in recent years.
They used to be really nice, especially the Chicken Tenders.
Now it's like chewing on a mouthful of rubbery buttock.

Used to love them years ago when there would be really orangey spicy ones in them! :)

    Lucozade :(

Supernoodles. I loved these in my student days.
Ever since they "improved" them, they are not so super.
    :(

Hellman's used to be the bollox. Now it's rank.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 354 ✭✭Alanhooly

Lucozade tastes completely different now, much less sugar in it apparently.

I remember when I was younger being devastated that 'hot lips' no longer tasted the same

I think we might be confusing maturing tastes with cibusnostalgique.

Yellow Man is crap these days.

Anyone else like the old yellow man?

A bit off topic but crisp related - my favourite crisp as a child was Sam Spudz Smokey Bacon. I haven't seen them for years but I'd love to try them again for pure nostalgia purposes.

I assume they've gone and fúcked Lucozade Orange too? Love that drink, has been a while since I've purchased though.

It's such a ruse and it's never better!

It would be great to see "The old and dangerous recipe" onto labels and packaging... I bet sales would go through the roof

Confectionary in particular has gone down the tubes. The taste and texture of some chocolate is totally different than what it used to be :/

The new thing is to discontinue every food product I like, even the new ones that have only been on the market for five minutes. What doesn't get discontinued gets watered down or is padded out with..I don't know what...cornish pasties are more cubes of potatoes than anything else (not that I've tried any since turning vegetarian) and Barry's tea now seems to be composed mainly of floor sweepings.

I used to like Dolmio stir-in pasta sauce when I was a child but I noticed when they took Anna, Luigi and Guiseppe off the label it really went downhill.

If your talking about junk food then for me then all junk is nowhere near as nice for me as I get older. I've become intolerant to crap food such that I feel sick after eating it. Not a bad thing really.

Bit off topic but this happened to my brother a few years ago and the many doctors he went to never worked it out. Pretty much everything started to taste and smell bad. He says it's slowly coming back to normal thankfully, or he's just getting used to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 326 ✭✭manutd83

Lucozade here 2,pure muck now, when they do taste tests they must of all stood around and said, well this is awful but the public are idiots and will buy it anyway, will never buy another bottle, rant over

Cadburys Roses obviously aren't up to much these days. (Worth a mention as Christmas slowly creeps in)

KFC gravy. Used to love the stuff, now it's tasteless. (I know how it's made, don't care, still loved it)

    Freddos.

Bought one yesterday, was some chalky imitation of the once legendary bar.
30p too. Get in the fócking sea.

    Phuck Phenylalanine.

Now, I have no conspiracy theories about phenylalanine, I just don't like the way stuff tastes with it. For years, you only had to worry about phenylalanine in diet drinks. No problem, if like me, you don't drink diet stuff. Dr. Pepper was my favourite soft drink (should be available in restaurants like America, but whatever), but they added phenylalanine to it and now it tastes like crap. I begrudgingly went back to the Irish staple of Lucozade, which regular drinkers of it will know, has also added phenylalanine recently. It's gross now.

So, I'm drinking Irn Bru instead, which is probably turning my insides orange, but at least it doesn't have phenylalanine...yet.

This problem of crap tasting food is also compounded by the fact that as we age we lose taste buds so we cant taste as well as we did when we were say,12
    How depressing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,740 ✭✭✭ILikeBoats

    Lucozade is rotten now.
It's all to do with this new sugar tax so they have to reformulate all the drinks to contain less than 5% sugar or else they get shafted

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,942 ✭✭✭topper75

I find that is only a problem with psuedo-food and processed rubbish, basically everything mentioned so far in the thread.

*faint smug smile creeps across face*

Now maybe it's my aging taste buds but fruit doesn't taste as good either nowadays in my elderly opinion.ðŸ˜In particular pears..I remember you could buy them individually wrapped and they were big, soft and juicy but I find them tasteless now and usually like rocks .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,737 ✭✭✭✭kylith

Skips are horrible since they took all the artificial flavourings out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,785 ✭✭✭KungPao

Even chipper food ain't the same. Used to be an explosion of flavour in the 90s. now it's just okay. Sure, the taste buds are older but they probably used to fry in pure delicious trans fats back then.

Brunch Ice Creams. Feck all spinkles on it anymore.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,431 ✭✭✭MilesMorales1

Cadburys chocolate definitely tastes worse recently actually, since krafts took over. Also the ****ing obsession with putting oreos in everything needs to end.
