Rolex Daytona or similar?

I have been searching for a premium watch for a while now and find rolex watches quite elegant but ofcourse pricey!
    I like this particular model:

    https://m.rolex.com/watches/cosmograph-daytona/m116500ln-0001.html

Any thoughts on this watch? I have seen this model getting sold for 4000e on other website and wonder if they are replica.

My budget is max 2800e. Am I being too naive to think about Rolex watch given my budget?

You won't get a stainless steel sports model for that price. The daytona is currently around the €10k mark second hand! The most basic steel sports submariner would be in the region of €5k

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,452 ✭✭✭Anjobe

RRP for that watch is £9100, I don't think there is generally much discount to had on Rolex, and second hand ones can sell for higher than new (from reliable, reputable sellers at least) because of the extent to which demand outstrips supply.

So, unfortunately, I think a Daytona will be well out of reach of a €2800 budget. How about an Omega Speedmaster Pro? Even paying top dollar on somewhere like Watchfinder you could find one in budget.

For 2800 you might get an old airking or precision.

For 3.5-4K in Ireland you might get a date just (no papers usually)

Lots of fake out there that have boxes and papers with them. Be careful with your cash.

    Agree with the above.

You'd be lucky to get a ceramic Daytona for less than 13k euro. Often hear stories on watch forums of people being told that there's a six year waiting list from an AD. Again, as with most of Rolexs stuff, I prefer the older model with steel bezel.

Perhaps the OP should look at the Steinhart Chronograph.

    First of all thanks everyone.

I checked Omega speedmaster pro and Steinhart watches. I didn't like them, and that's just my personal choice. I am sure they must be brilliant watches.

Also, i have been dreaming about having a Rolex for several years so maybe that's why my mind is set to having a Rolex.

I would never invest anything over 500e on adverts. I find it risky and would prefer to give more to a genuine shop or an online seller.

And i had a Breitling replica in the past and it was not even close to the real deal. Maybe it was an cheap replica? And it looks like my budget is not even close to buy a real Daytona, even a used one!

    Any other suggestions?

Plenty of trusted sellers on adverts.

With a budget of 2.8k you can buy a 2.8k new watch and take 50%hit on depreciation that day.

Or you can buy a second hand 5k watch for 2.5k.

Post a few example of watches you like interms of style?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,915 ✭✭✭masterboy123

These are few styles i like:

    http://www.watchshop.com/mens-guess-oasis-watch-w0366g4-p99976264.html?altproduct=1

But inside my heart I may be stuck with a dream of getting Rolex.

Bling! For 2.8 you can get close to an older second hand piece. Both I posted would be from trusted dealers.

A second hand Daytona is not available for less than 8k. The one you linked to is 13-14kbsevobd hand (trading above rrp due to lack of supply).

Any other model for 200e in the meantime? I liked Guess watch with golden rose dial and blue strap. Are they any good?

The watch you are looking at is a quartz ,( runs on a battery) the seiko is an automatic watch, runs of a movement inside , you could read up on this on line,
be careful not to fall down the rabbit hole , It's a very bad disease with no cure.

Turdor big watch looks nice but a bit dull around bezel.

I have checked cons and pros of having auto watch vs battery watches

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 673 ✭✭✭CarltonBrowne

The two watches you've posted links to bear no resemblance to anything in the Rolex range. You need to either decide that it's a Rolex you want, in which case forget about what you like the look of and let your budget trim what you can have, or buy something else. The exchange rate is very much in your favour at the moment so I'd be looking at buying secondhand in the UK (obviously including Northern Ireland); you will almost certainly pay for your flight with what you save. With a bit of patience you'll get something for your budget.

Lunns in Belfast do pre-owned (nothing for your budget at the moment but it might be an idea to ring them up), Miltonaires have a good reputation and Mike Wood of The Old Watch Shop in Southport may be able to help you. There are dozens of others out there.

Edit: a Tudor chronograph should be just doable for your budget (I have no idea what "a bit dial around bezel" means) and the big block is probably in something of a sweet spot inasmuch as it's in a Rolex Oyster case, has a date and also a movement that can be serviced outside of the rather controlled Rolex parts supply chain. The only problem is that the big block ship might have sailed away from your budget but I haven't been tracking prices recently to be sure.

tbh. the ones you have lined to are more fashion type watches. If you want a Rolex, you need to save,
As everyone has mentioned, go down the 2nd hand route to get a used Rolex but then you are limited to teh type based on you money
What about the Bulova Moon? well in your budget and maybe buy an  Omega Seamaster as well, or maybe a Seamaster Chrono

I agree I don't have the budget to buy a good Rolex.

I meant Tudor "dial is a bit dull" in my previous post.

How are Bulova watches? They have one with rose gold dial and i really like it.

Yes that's exactly what this hobby is all about, If you like that Bulova, go for it.
They make excellent quartz watches, Your are better to play around with less expensive watches at this stage , because your taste will change as you travel your journey of horology . Seiko are a very good brand to look at as there is a watch for every budget, Enjoy.

Is it Tudor heritage black bay chrono? It costs 4.8k. Again out of my budget.
Going to look at Bulova and Seiko watches now

I would buy this Bulova watch, if it comes in silver metal link bracelet.

Don't forget that the common or garden Seiko watches found in most watch stores are the bottom of a very large pyramid of Seiko products.

Seiko make their so-called 'spring-drive' watches right up to prices approaching the lower end of the Rolex market.

Just checked them and they are nice alright.

Grand Seiko Black Ceramic Collection looks luxurious.

Spring drive models aren't even the most expensive watches amongst GS. Their Credor line has watches that wouldn't leave you much change out of half a million.

    Hello Everyone,

So I have saved little more in the last 8 months since I first started this thread.

My budget is still far from affording a new Rolex, so I am looking for certified pre-owned Rolex watches. Any certified websites in Ireland or UK, where I could browse the models? Pls share your experiences with used Rolex.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,473 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

watchfinder.co.uk sell genuine rolex, unfortunately desirable models value on the grey market is actually higher than rrp

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,915 ✭✭✭masterboy123

They have a good collection, wondering if its safe to order online and if custom charges will be applied as its outside of Ireland.

    Any Irish website available?

    yes its safe

UK is in the EU still so no customs

And im sure they will kill you on fx if you goto www.watchfinder.ie

there is no one in ireland of their scale.

Try https://www.chrono24.co.uk for comparison also. Some international/EU sellers and will give you ballpark pricing for a particular make/model

I have noticed Lunn's up in the North are about 1000 euros or more cheaper than South Ireland.

Do they do any discount at Keane's or other jewellery store in Ireland?

Based on a recent story on here about how Keanes lost a customers Rolex whilst in for a service and to make matters worse, covered it up to Rolex and weren't very apologetic about it, I would avoid them to be honest.

You will find it hard to beat the price up north to be honest. With exchange rates the way they are and a small bit of discount it will be hard to beat.

£ rrp is the cheapest in the world it seems at the moment, hence the stock levels at RRP are low or non existent

    6000€
Daytona is still out of budget. And I like submariner series also, but cheapest one is 8800€ at Keane's with green dial. Same would be 1000e less in North.

So the Keane's lost customers watch and didn't replace?? Or what was the issue?

Green dial sub is a hot model as well they sell for over rrp on Watchfinder etc and rrp is probably over £7k now

Long wait lists for a hulk. They come up second hand on adverts occasional but expect to pay the full rrp for the second hand pleasure even. Chances of you getting one from the shop are slim without some purchasing history.

Also note it's a fairly good asset. Buy for 8k and you could sell the next morning for almost the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,915 ✭✭✭masterboy123

I have never owned a Rolex before, but I thought if a shop has it on their website with price tag, that it's available there.
If I book it at Keane's, will it take long?

I suppose it's resale value would drop in the next few years, it's oystersteel unlike gold or platinum.

No. The price list on Keanes mean nothing related to availability.

Booking at Keanes its likely to take a year or 3. With no buying history you might never get to the top of the list for a hot model.

Resale value for a steel Daytona or Hulk won't drop unless there is a significant change in the market. They are more likely to appreciate based on the last 4 years (I don't think the current upward trajectory can be sustained). Precious metal watches will drop significant in value the day you buy.

As 893 said gold and platinum models tend to be discounted and loose value the minute you buy them , the lower entry cost of steel means they are more sought after
