Same with Ryan Tubridy - biggest talk show in Ireland commanding half a million viewers for around 38 Fridays of the year - generating a huge amount of advertising revenue. So people do like these 2 shows and are getting their value for the licence fee.

People only watch that show out of habit, tubs has nothing to do with it. TBH, they might get higher ratings without him.

TV3 never stopped banging on about their lack of funding from the TV licence fee but never once mentioned the few bob that was written off for them.

If you listen to DAB broadcasts, you are listening to DAB. If you listen to Saorview, you are listening to Saorview. If you listen to RTE of the web, you are listening to a web broadcast. The programme you are listening to is content. RTE radio is also available on satellite as well.

DAB is an inferior broadcasting system to FM and should be dropped. RTE have shelved the expansion of DAB and the commercial broadcasters have shown no interest in using it. It should be dropped.

Digital radio is digital radio, whether or you use a digital radio set or digital TV to listen to it.

    2015 figures are out
There are four new entrants on the list compared to the 2014 figures: Ray D'Arcy, Claire Byrne, Nicky Byrne and Darragh Maloney.

The four who have dropped out are George Lee, Richard Crowley, Colm Hayes and Derek Mooney.

The real question to ask is whether or not those highly paid are drawing in their costs in advertising and sponsorship.

If they are, then fair enough.

Do you think they are? Bryan Dobson brings in the audience for Six One, Miriam O'Callaghan bring in the audience for Prime Time, Daragh Maloney brings in the 1m+ viewers for the Euros, HAHHAHAHHAHAH laughable. honestly.

    increase of 290,636

Really surprised at the Daragh Maloney figure. How does he get that amount of money? Especially in 2015, when there was no World Cup/Euros or Olympics?

Digital radio is digital radio, whether or you use a digital radio set or digital TV to listen to it.

Digital radio is just an encoding.

DAB. is the radio system broadcast on Band III using a specific system. RTE use it from three transmitters covering Limerick, Cork and the North East. Only one mux is currently in use for RTE digital radio stations. The also broadcast in DAB+ for some stations.

Saorview is broadcast using DVB - a different broadcasting system used for TV.

The fact is that Saorview can be received by 99% of the population, but dab can only be received by 50% of the population, and most of those do not own a DAB set, and even those that do own a DAB set only use it for FM reception.

So why continue with the failed DAB experiment?

    Good question.

Perhaps DAB is the foundation for the broadcast of all RTE radio stations on DVB (I'm only speculating).

Why continue to use a system that has failed to reach any level of audience? Has it even got out of the 'trial' status?

Does anyone actually listen to these RTE digital stations?

Do RTE publish listenership levels for either their digital (only) radio stations or for the DAB broadcasts? How many listen to their DAB+ versions? Is DAB+ going to be the default and the basic DAB be discontinued?

I await the RTE response. I am listening.

RTÉ Radio Gold seems to do quite well. RTÉ should be able to tell from TAM ratings AFAIK, could be wrong, but they won't issue those results.

Nicky Byrne on 200k for a radio show with about 15 hours air time per week! That has to be the sweetest part time job I've ever seen. Good job he can double over as a singer if they're stuck  :ermm:

The only thing is he does have more charisma than the rest of them put together.

At some point, as a state funded broadcaster subsidised by a tax, the top brass should be brought before the likes of the public accounts committee and brought to task over these salaries and made to justify them.

I don't believe anyway that the people in question are key cornerstones for the channel to thrive or generate revenue and viewership. I'd actively avoid anything with Ray Darcy or Tubs. That is ludicrous expenditure considering the issue with RTE is being unable to compete for the rights to actual viewer drawing shows and their own generated content.

They need someone radical to clear out that lot and use the station as a platform for up and coming or under the radar domestic presenters, who if they are good enough get poached for big salaries by rivals all well and good. But I believe out national, state funded broadcaster, shouldn't be looking to pay top dollar for mediocre presenters and instead look to promote up and coming or promising talent.

Quotes that Ray D'Arcy was getting a higher wage at Today FM. Would Today FM have been able to pay him more than that?

Probably take into account that the runtime for his show on radio had halved. But that's still a huge wage.
