What was the attendance out of interest?

    Just under 11,000

Note to self: do some detailed research into likely weather conditions before attending any more league games. It was when I saw some of the advertising hoardings at the end blowing away that I asked myself what I and the 10,900-odd other headcases were doing there...

A win is a win in those atrocious conditions.

Walked across MacHale Park after the game and the surface is substantially sub standard for playing gaelic football.

Pretty tough on Fergal Boland but things really didn't go his way in the first half.Brian Reape came into his own in the second half.Conor Diskin will undoubtedly get more game time.Donie Vaughan put in a great shift all night ditto Colm Boyle.Brendan Harrison was imperious.

I was expecting more from Evan Regan,he didn't tend to track back very well.

Our long standing tendency to concede late goals leaves me sitting on the edge of my seat with my heart in mouth.

Great to have two points on the board, more than likely two more wins will be enough.

Is James Durcan injured?I saw him untogged amongst the substitutes last Sunday.

You would have thought that the pitch would be in better condition after dumping a beach of sand on it just before the Tyrone game last year.

Will be interesting to see what happens Smith, absolutely knacker behaviour.

It was a hard night being a spectator . With the driving rain it felt well below zero .

Only on the way home did I realise that the match was played in Storm conditions. Trees down on 2 approach roads home . MAking it difficult to even get home. Debris everywhere .

What is the procedural situation? Can anything be done?

Would have been an interesting game if the hand pass rule was in place.

Interesting that Conor Loftus wasn't listed among the subs. Wonder is it a case that he is getting a kick up the ar$e with regards to applying himself?

10 steps allowed for mayo players
Considering the strength of the two teams I would have thought mayo would win that easier

It wasn't a day for football. Anybody with half a brain knew before throw-in that it was going to be a tight, low-scoring game with the conditions.

Mayo did well in the first half to keep the margin at four points and were more clinical the second half with the breeze. Not much more analysis needed.

Did you happen to see the game and the conditions at all ?

I've never seen weather as bad, the wind was nuts.

It only took a few minutes into the game to realize the realtive strength of the two teams matter far less than if it were a calm dry night.

It was evident during the warm up! Credit to both teams for making the most of it, could have been a far worse game all things considered.

Without doubt one of the worst nights I’ve ever been at for a football match. Solid win , coughing up the last minute goal was annoying, 4 points would have been a pretty accurate reflection on the evening, but matters little anyway.

Kevin McLoughlins importance to the team was magnified by his absence tonight

It might have been harsh on Boland being subbed at HT but he has absolutely no impact and he just isn’t going to be up to it physically
    That’s the reality

In fairness , when was the last time you saw a match where the steps rule was enforced accurately?

It was great for Mayo to be only four points down half time not sure how much it had to do with Mayo doing well though as Roscommon kicked a number of good scoring opportunities wide and should have hit net after that Rob Hennelly error.

With the gale force wind for all the 2nd half it was just a matter of what the margin of victory would be for Mayo. A bit of a surprise that it took until the 60th to take the lead and once Reape goaled in the 64th which was Mayos final score of the game it was contest won but it must be said another ref could have pulled it up for steps. Another late goal conceded showed that rossies went down fighting and that Mayo didn't learn much from the Galway game 2 weeks ago.

It's not up to Dublin to enforce the rules. That's the ref's.job.
    Keep digging.

    Exactly!

Look refs have enough to do without being able to see every single time someone takes a step too many or every single throw ball etc. These things happen

Roscommon have no-one to blame but themselves, a more attacking approach in the first half and who knows what would have transpired. Frankly 5 points playing with that gale was appalling

A 4 point lead was absolutely nothing at HT and Mayo were always going to go on and cover that, regardless if they got a bit of good fortune for the goal.

The match was played in freak conditions, impossible to judge anything from that. You could be 50 years waiting to play in such stormy winds again, it was a freak one-off - but having a pop at them for not winning easier is laughable!

Goes to show how ill thought out the hand-pass rule was though.
When you see the difficulty refs have counting step, it would make you wonder if the geniuses who came up with it ever watched an actual game.

Not to knock the importance of McLough's but I'm not sure last night was the night that anyone would shine. It was just a slog.

I think it's great to have someone like Boland. Winter isn't when we'll see the best of him imo and you just have to look at McLoughlin to see that you don't need to be a giant to make an impact. I certainly think there's a role for him. Maybe/probably not in the starting 15 but he does offering something different.

In fairness a more defensive approach is something that Roscommon need to be working on during the league after a number of years with a wide open defence. Still created 14 scoring chances first half and with a more accurate free taker than Enda Smith who i don't recall ever taking them before it could have given a 7 or 8 point lead at half time and perhaps enough of lead to hold on.

Anyway weather wise its near impossible to tell where either side stand at the moment other than Mayo have secured the 2 points in a game they were expected to win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,717 ✭✭✭irishgeo

A 14 man defeence doesn't lead to a lot of scoring chances. Mayo couldn't bypass it because the gale stopped any hope of a foot pass or a shot from long range. Wayward shooting cost roscommon a decent lead at the end of the first half.

I've never seen weather as bad,

There was a game against Galway in terrible conditions a few years ago, snow was it?

Will be plenty of lads with the flu after last night! :)

Still a good win, hard to gauge how a game will go when you can barely solo due to the conditions, if it was that bad a couple of hours earlier then they could have cancelled it. Great turnout by the fans considering.

Win is a win. Hard to gauge any performances when you consider the conditions. Thought Doc and Reape had really good game. AOS played well, took dogs abuse as always. Andy had zero affect when he came on, harsh on Boland.
Defence was tight enough, Hennelly up to his usual mistakes.
The CCC should be reviewing that incident and given that lad a few months on the sideline, that said we have been here before and nothing happened.

Tyrone will be a tough ask next week.
