They should give Peter Leahy the mens job.

After this last championship they could do with some tough love, and it'd clear the way for the ladies to have the craic at training and never be dropped.

@KCsixtyseven: If James Horan is appointed Mayo manager again, it would mean four of their last seven managerial appointments are someone taking the job for the second time. John Maughan, John O'Mahony and Pat Holmes are the others.

Back to the future part 4
Many many examples in sport where is doesn't work out
    Few where it did

Hope this is the exception to the rule

James Horan and Michael Solan are the only nominations.

Does that mean we've no chance of both working together? I'd have been delighted with Solan as a selector for Horan

Wouldn't rule it out by any means.

    Ok so Horan and Solan

I can't complain about either of those two option too much, no time wasters there I don't think.

Horan has the experience but I think Solan would be more interested in giving new guys a good chance to impress.

Hard to know which is the best option for Mayo.

who decides, a club vote or the county board.

Technically the county board. The clubs put forward the nominations. Apparently the players have a say in who is appointed since the Holmes Connelly incident.

With all due respect to Solan this should be a no brainer of a decision imo (it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he withdrew his name today or tomorrow though)

2 All Ireland Finals, losing a semi after a replay, 4 Connacht titles in 4 years, league final appearance against winning an under 21 championship, there’s just no comparison.

It might be a different conversation if Mayo had a raft of retirements but there is still a window of opportunity with these players (a team Horan has built himself).

I’m sure Solan may get his chance in future – a good run with a club side would do him no harm, however – but to me this should be a straightforward decision, which I would imagine will be the preference of the players also

    Not hard
At this point in time it’s Horan
Sensible move if Horan was agreeable would be to include solan in his backroom team
But if not he should not be forced upon him

Cora could be a selector on the mens team now she has free time

Who are "the players" I wonder - last years panel? A group of senior players who have been around longest?

Ok let’s go a bit back in time

It’s October 2010, Mayo are looking for a new manager after a championship exit before the first of July the summer just gone.

    The choices are as follows

A man who, in the previous 13 or 14 years, has got the team to multiple All Ireland finals, lost a couple of them by narrow margins, one after a replay. He last managed Mayo 5 years previous.

A younger man who has no inter-county managerial experience, has guided his club to intermediate championship success and currently has them at the latter stages of the senior championship.

    Who do you pick?

In 2018 you have the following choices

Horan in the previous 8 years has got his team to multiple All Ireland finals, losing by small margins. He last managed Mayo 4 year previous.

Solan has no senior management experience but has won and got to a national final at underage.

Now I know there are differences between the “Manghan or Horan” in 2010 and “Horan or Solan” in 2018 choices but I don’t think Horan is the no-brainier that some think it is.

I agree with the quoted poster when he/she says that Horan with Solan in the backroom would be sensible, actually IMO it would be desirable.

As I’ve said many time here I think it’s a few years too early for Horan to have the job back. A few more years in club football, and with newer players on the Mayo panel would have been better I think, but alas Rochford’s resignation seems to be bringing that forwards

Both of them with Horan calling the shots and Solan ready to take over would seem the best bet for me... but not sure would Solan be up for that. I thought it would be the sensible step to get Solan in with Rochford but it obviously didn't happen.

    Solan to Westport?

If Horan gets Mayo, I would think that Conway might step up and take a solo job. It would be a good fit on paper anyway given his role with Rice College.

Never underestimate the desire of the county board to have a Yes man. Horan is not that. There are a couple on the board who were there during Horan's last stint and were glad to see the back of him. Nothing to suggest they'd welcome him back.

Never underestimate the desire of the county board to be held accountable to the clubs when the team expenses are so high that extra levies need to be applied to cover costs.
Alright talking about yes/no men but the county board are Representative of much more than the Mayo senior team.
I saw occasions where players didn't play club championship games based on Horan's "advice" so i'd wager a lot of delegates would have long memories too.
