Yeah 2013 final, he was having a fine game then taken off abruptly and Mayo barely won a ball in the full forward line afterwards.

It was a large discussion point in the aftermath at the time - he was MOTM in the semi and was getting the better of O'Carroll that day until that point.

Was never really able to hold down his place since. I always felt he had a bit more to offer
It was a terrible decision by Horan and cost us the game imo

Was right behind the goal too so I'd a perfect view of him and had been so impressed with his movement and application until that point :(

If I do recall, we barely scored after he went off (last 10 minutes aside when Dublin played the percentages and were happy to concede frees), which is a mad scenario considering I don't think he even saw the half hour mark

Mayo News report that both Jason Gibbons and Alan Freeman have been released from the panel whilst James Durkan, brother of Paddy, has joined the Development squad.

You have to admire Freeman for coming back this year and giving it another go. Pity he couldn't establish himself this time around

Very true, at times we really do seem to underestimate the commitment these lads make. Shame it didn't work out, but nothing ventured and all that..

They took him off and put on M Conroy, who didn't exactly set the world on fire.

In the run up to the game, Freeman was sick with the flu (alledgedly) and had a big row with Horan (alledgedly) in the tunnel/on the bus/back at the hotel about getting the curly finger.

Freeman wasn't sick, even though that's what the rumour was. Thought he was having a decent game that day too. Horan could have waited a longer before bringing on Conroy.
Horan pulled Freeman too soon that day . It was a panicked substitution . Freeman had been very good in the semi-final and was not playing badly enough to be substituted that day . One Horan definitely got wrong .

Agreed. I was sitting right of our full-forward line that day and he was doing fine. Conroy was doing alright that season but hooking Freeman early doors was a big mistake. It's a pity it hasn't worked out for him, thought he could have given us something different this year and it's not like he had many chances in the league.

Gibbons is another guy who could have done us a turn from the bench but he has regressed since 2014.

Conroy had been brilliant against Dublin in the 2012 Semi Final and I think management were eager to get him on and weren't going to drop Andy Moran or Cillian O Connor but didn't want to drop Freeman because he was MOM against Tyrone.

Was probably our most disappointing AI final performance of the four this decade considering the performances that year in the championship up to that point.

Conroy was apparently flying in training and Horan was dying to get him on from all accounts. It just didn't work.

This really should have been the platform for Freeman after that but it went the other way for him which is a pity.

I contacted the Connacht Council office via e mail today.

Here's the news re tickets for the May 13th clash.

Tickets will be on sale two weeks before the game.

Sad to hear the news re Alan Freeman,a great servant of the Green and Red.

Not surprised re Jason Gibbons,he has significantly regressed in recent years.

Freeman was told not to play for his club the week of the Donegal game, yet he was only brought on at the death, what is the point of that? afaik thats the only
game time he saw. Heard he was poor for Aghamore at the weekend in the SFC and got pulled off free taking duties

Being cautious and sensible, no? If he had played and got injured and a couple more of the squad got injured then fingers would have been pointed at management.

I would have assumed it's common practice for even the proverbial tackle bag holders of the county panel to not play league with their club unless returning from injury.

It's the (often unfortunate) nature of the beast when playing county

Does anyone know what the actual capacity of McHale Park is? I always thought it was 38,000 since the re-development, that's the figure that was quoted at the time.

Recent articles I've seen regarding the Galway-Mayo game being a sell-out have the capacity at 28,000 and I saw another one that suggested 31,000. Surely somebody knows the real figure?

Anybody know what is the record crowd number at a Connaught Championship game?

I would imagine it would be a mayo/galway game sometime in the fifties or sixties, but saying that I would not be surprised if it was Ross/Mayo or Ross/Galway. I'm off to take a look.

edit: couldnt find anything but found this lil nugget
    1960 Galway 2-5 Leitrim 0-5
    1959 Galway 5-8 Leitrim 0-12
    1958 Galway 2-10 Leitrim 1-11
    1957 Galway 4-8 Leitrim 0-4

Ok Leitrim lost but getting to 4 finals in a row is no mean feat.

    edit 2:
Good god, the 1924 final finished all square at
    Mayo 0-1 Galway 0-1

Following the Slattery Report in 2011 the capacity had to be reduced to 28,187. Pearse Stadium was reduced to 26,197. I don't know that any works carried out since then would have allowed the capacity of either ground to be brought back up. It hasn't mattered before now as Galway have only had two men and a dog following them to away games and a small enough home support as well, but now that their legendary bandwagoners have returned the capacities of McHale and Pearse might be tested a bit more this year.

Wow! what a bitter post, the two men and a dog even in the dogs lifetime have at least seen their county win both All Ireland football and Hurling titles.

There aren't too many dogs left in this world that have seen Galway footballers win a championship game in Croker.

Oh don't worry, it's still very vivid in our minds. Last September was like deja vu all over again. :-) :-)

Cracking interview with Andy on OTB.Mixes the very personal with his all consuming passion for Mayo GAA.

Interesting the fact that there's only 5 players in Dublin for the majority of the championship.

Bitter indeed! I asked a simple question about capacity and it got turned into a rant about Galway supporters or the supposed lack of them. But let's not get sidetracked by one eejit.

In fairness Mayo are not short of bandwagoners themselves. I personally know a few that would go to every Mayo championship game up in Dublin without fail but would never dream of going to a club match or might not even bother taking in a Mayo league game unless it was convenient. This current Mayo side get great support as they have often gone deep into the championship and almost guarantee a few big days out every year. But that level of support has not always been there to that level and might not be there again once the current side fades away. All it takes is a few bad years for many casual fans to drift away in any county sadly.

That's a fair point and one I noted when so many left early during Tyrone game

Success has many mothers and fathers , failure is an orphan ........or something like that .
I can get all the failure I need at home......why would I be looking for consistent failure from my team.....or something like that .
