Drake was clearly struggling with an injury in the second half. I saw him get a teammate to chase his man down because he couldn’t. I watched him when the play was well away from him too and he was walking gingerly on his ankle. No way he should have stayed on so long.

Yeah he signaled to the sideline to be taken off a good while before it happened!!!!! Strange one

The reality for me is, there wasn't a whole pile of options screaming from the bench.

There isn't and that's a problem for Mayo at the moment, not enough players coming through and pushing for a starting spot. Mayo's best 15 now is more or less the same as it was last September but it needs freshening up. In Galway we have a similiar problem with our hurlers, we're not finding any new players and we'll be relying on the same starting 15 again more or less. You need those young players coming through to shake things up and keep the established fellas on their toes.

There are plenty of quality hurlers coming through in Galway but most of them are still on the young side and it's not easy to break into a strong team that just won an All-Ireland. You have to be exceptionally good at that age to oust someone.

It may be a bit early to say but if O'Donogue, Crowe & Gallagher emerge as good team / squad options then it's not a bad return since last Sept. 2-3 real options each year would be plenty imo.

I was just referring to our bench against Donegal. It wasn't strong and I couldn't see much of an impact from it.
On the other hand, we sent out a very strong 15 and even with the likes Cillian O'Connor, Keegan, Higgins missing.

Our squad has never been as strong, the only issue is that there's a big group of them the wrong side of 30 and there's a big group of them who aren't forwards...

Oh I agree it's never easy to break into a strong All-Ireland winning team, just that we tried a few new players in the league and none of them made that much of an impact or made any great case for themselves in terms of starting. It leaves us with a weakish subs bench. Mayo haven't unearthed any potential stars either though like our young hurlers, some of them may just need a bit more time.

Ye could badly do with finding a couple of good young forwards alright, especially with Alan Dillon gone and Andy Moran probably in his last season. Conor Loftus is improving all the time though and I could see him nailing down a starting spot soon enough.

What makes you think its Andy's last season?

    Andy's age I suppose :)
Young family too. I would be surprised to see him around next year.

I agree,I think Conor Loftus will become a mainstay of our attack in years to come.

There is also the new format with this Super 8`s, and with the shortened football championship year, from now on teams will need strong benches if they hope to progress imo

He is getting on in age and no player can keep going for ever. I would be surprised if we see him back in 2019, if he does then fair play to him but either way Mayo need to be finding some younger options pretty soon.

Time waits for no man as you say BUT given that he is still deservedly a regular starter /our main man in FF line is exepct another season out of him . Assuming everything goes ok injury wise etc. He would be some man to come off the bench for 20/25 minutes . I think that will happen for one season which will be his last

I'd doubt this is Andy's last year, injury depending

He's in the form of his life and it's not as if he's been a regular starter for years and years, I could definitely see him being fine with an impact sub role as KM79 says

Assuming that he's ok with that, not everyone is a fan of the idea of the commitment and training that goes into an inter county team, just to sit on the bench for most of the match

True but he does strike me as someone who wants to wear the jersey as long as he can
Missed a few years with injuries etc

    Anyway that’s for next year

Anybody see our nearest and dearest neighbours in action today?Roscommon continue to have the indian sign over Cavan in a very high scoring affair.Offensively very impressive but obviously less so defensively.Impressive bounce back to division one.

I thought Galway really put it up to Dublin in the division one final, mindful of the fact the Dubs lost a man. They're a very talented team who I think will cause us no end of problems on May 13th.They are not the finishest article yet but may soon be in a position to challenge the Dublin hegemony.Mystifying the lack of credit Kevin Walsh gets. This Connacht championship is likely to be the most competitive and of the highest standard since the mid to late nineties.

Thought the D2 final was extremely poor standard. While its great to see scores, that game was crazily open. They would be destroyed by the top teams (i.e. Dublin).

Hard to know what to make of Galway. It probably sets us up well for the Mayo because it's clear we have work to do. The starting 15 today is very very close to the starting 15 v Mayo. A maximum of 2 - 3 changes. Players like Daly & Ian Burke will push for a place.

I can no longer see Green Peters posts and haven't been able to for over a year
    Except when quoted
Today I noticed he came on here to wish "our " neighbours Roscommon and Galway all the best
He is now after posting on the Dublin forum as a Galway man referring to mayo as "Sammy Dodgers"
Now maybe he is just confused and not a troll ...........

I couldn't understand why Galway didn't go man on man when the Dubs went down to 14. Galway carried the ball all the time and never kicked any fast ball to comer who is a serious player.

As regards the showdown, it will really be a dog fight to see who gets the win. I think you guys have been impressive all throughout the league but I expect us to be well focused for this one. It really has the making of a great battle
