What two things would you change in Ireland with 1 billion euro?

I've always had strong opinions about this, If I had €1 billion euro there are two very important things I would change:

1.) Architecture of Dublin - Dublin looks like a fecking kip as many have reiterated. It's an embarrassment for a capital city seeing as small towns in Western Europe look better on their worst day (e.g Nice during July attacks) than Dublin will ever look on a warm clear sky sunny day in June/July. It's very difficult to be one of the happiest countries in the world when we live in gray buildings overlooking a virtual sewer.

I would demolish the buildings that couldn't be remodeled.

2.) Creating liberal schools - Hopefully this would get rid of the harsh accents in North Dublin and across some parts of the country. I also think we Irish (along with the English) are quite conservative compared to our European counterparts when it comes to parenting, schooling, etc. It's probably due to our long history of Catholicism and poverty.

I'd build a wall to keep the Mexicans out.

Then, I'd make Mexico pay for it, so I'd still have a billion. Which I would keep for myself.

I would give myself 20 million. Yeah ..I would do that...I deserve it. Deal..

I would invest in educate together schools. I would give to the rape crisis center. I would invest council activities such as cleaning streets etc. I would invest millions in building affordable housing. I would start a theme park and give all my employees free health insurance.

I would give grants out for people to go to college. I would sponsor ICMEC (they help find missing kids)

I would start a program similar to the imagination library that dolly parton has. I would give to arts education. I would give free concerts and free ice cream three times a year.

I would try and sponsor health care for children.

Obv private philanthropy cannot do everything public taxation is meant to. It's just if you had it. :) It would be nice to do.

Obv it's not a substitute for public services. It's just nice to do. :)

At least, I'd improve a few 'knackerish' buildings in the town centre. Honestly, it's mad how we claim to be a great tourist destination when a lot of areas in our capital city looks like a modified version of an African city.

I think the poor unfortunates who rely on charities are all to familiar to bring marginalised and excluded.

It's just that continued annoyance where people refer to the country generally and then immediately Dublin specifically. It comes across as having been the only place in their mind as they said the word "country".

Yes we know a large portion of the population of the country live there (but aren't from there) but it happens so much from politicians to current affairs commentary that it is annoying to most of the rest of the country.

On that note, I'd offer the €B in incentives to Google, FB etc to move their offices to Galway or Limerick (Cork has Apple already :) ), if they move, their staff would move, and this would help prepare/create a tech hub outside the capital as the availability of resources in the new area would attract other companies to follow.

    Encouraged decentralisation if you will.

This would also help Dublin as, over time, reduced population (as tech staff move west) would free up accommodation thus reducing rents and also reducing strain on transport systems in the city.

Might seem a funny way to spend €1B put as others pointed out, that will only get you one hospital (which, BTW, will cost way more than that by the time it's built).

    Here's what I would do

I would call a meeting I would invite the government , a nurse and doctor, a teacher and an sna,a homeless person and someone representing a homeless charity. I would invite an unemployed person and Angela Merkel.

I would tell the government feck off I'm taking over I wouldn't be mean I would pension them all off on the state pension.
I would ask the nurse and doctor what I could do to make our health service better same with the teacher, sna and homeless person.
I would tell Angela Merkel **** off and pass the same message onto the bond holders and the banks and I would take all the keys of vacant properties that NAMA have.
Not every property is habitable this is what I would do for the unemployed person I would give back every person looking for a job their self respect and regardless of their skill set a decent wage.
Instead of throwing money at the problems I would listen to people on ground level who would know where the fundamental problems are. There's always people who don't want to work these can stay stuggling on the basic unemployment amount.
Anyone wanting to come into our country would be shipped to one of our uninhabited islands of the coast given food and shelter for a specified time frame screened for health issues then and only then will they be given the opportunity to integrate into our society. My country my rules!
    That's the first part!

The second is I would live the life I deserve, big house nice car(s) holidays etc secure in the knowledge I've done my bit.

If anyone wants to donate to this my name is

    Princess lala
    and my address is utopia!

Taken from another thread, but THIS is what I would do:

    1) Build a massive underground jail, the biggest jail in the world, fit to hold 1 million people.

    2) Put every joyriding, junkie, fraudster, banker, paedophile, illegal immigrant, shoplifting, lying politicians, dishonest, violent scumbag in Ireland into it.

    3) Take in prisoners from other countries. Charge the other countries for keeping their scum. This will keep more good people of the world safe, dilute crime levels worldwide, and help our economy.

    4) Have treadmills in the jail. Make the scum run on them and generate electricity. Let 1000 Watts = 1 minute less jail time.

    5) Sell the electricity, which will not only boost our economy evenfurther, but will help the global warming crisis aswell.

    6) Scrap all previous laws, and start from scratch. Publish a book called "The Law". Make it available to everybody in Ireland. Teach it in schools. Leave no excuse for criminal behaviour.

    7) In this book, state the sentences. Rape of children = rest of your life in jail. Not 4 years with 2 suspended, not 18 months and a donation to charity, minimum of 100 years just to be sure. Same for dealing drugs. This is both as a punishment, and to keep criminals away from normal people. Normal people dont rob, do drugs, or rape. Also, longer sentences = more electricity produced.

    8) Aim to build a society which mimics that of "The Girl From Tomorrow". The only people who should be walking around freely are those responsible enough to know how to use their freedom properly.

I wouldn't trust anybody in a state organisation in this country to spend it wisely, so I'd set up a group to administer a fund.
Use it specifically for individuals in need( medical treatment, mental illness, educational shortfalls) or small, locally based initiatives ( small enterprise, local charity fundraising, local beautication schemes)
Ideally, I'd take at least a quarter of the money and invest it, to keep the fund going longer.
Unfortunately, in this day and age, a billion is a pifflingly small amount, so I'd say if we got 5 years out of it, we'd be doing well.

    Love daydreaming...

I would buy up a lot of land and build apartment blocks. These apartments will be high quality, ranging from single roomed to ones that take up an entire floor for families.

I would build a underground line that links all my apartment suburbs to the city centre. At the city centre I will build shopping malls on top of the underground station. No one who lives in my apartments will need a car.

Since each apartment neighbourhood will support a large number of residents, I becomes viable to support local businesses, 7-11s, clinics, gyms etc...

At the city centre I will build commercial/residential hybrids. For example, underground will be the metro. G/F, 1-4F will be a large shopping mall. 5F is the lobby for private luxury apartments. 6-7F will be gyms, swimming pools etc for residents. 8F above will be the luxury apartments.

My metro system will be a blood vessels of the city. People will be begging for my company to extend my metro line to their area. I won't goto areas where it is largely houses as density is not high enough.
