What did you want to be when you were growing up?

When you were growing up, what job did you want to be? Dream job sort of thing.

I wanted to be a steam train driver like in thomas the tank engine. Then my dad said that wasn't a realistic career and I could join the army and be a soldier like him. Then that didn't happen, and since I grew up I've no idea what I'd like to do for a long term career.

    How about you?

Farmer. Because, I've absolutely Always been obsessed with trapping things. Thus, even my little preschool mind had it worked out that I should be a farmer. Then, I'd own lots of land and would be able to trap on it :) F**kin Easy!

Quite funny, really. I'm now a retired, rural pest controller. Living in an old family farm house. Amidst nothing But farms. For as far as the eye can see, in any direction. And I have full permission to set traps on more land than I'm now fit enough to even walk to.

Oh, and my farmer friends slog their guts out, working dawn till dusk and beyond. I just mooch about, looking for tracks 'n sh!t.

    F**king cracked it, didn't I?! :D

I always wanted to be an archaeologist when I was in primary school. At the same age a girl I went to school with also wanted to be one and last I heard she had been out in Greece for years working as one. Pretty impressive to be able to make a living out of a passion.

Astronaut until I discovered computers then a computer programmer. The thought of being able to spend all day on a computer just amazed me at the time.

So not sure if I'm living the dream or wasting my life.

A firewoman (as in the fire brigade, not some sort of comic superhero) or a spy. I still do!

I wanted to be a Garda but was lured onto building sites with the promise of more money .Still would love to join the gardai but too old and fat now plus god only knows how they live on their wages .Definitely the most underpaid public jobs - when county council office jobs pay more money than someone who is risking their own safety for others , you have to wonder why anyone would do it ..

A nurse. Funny that because if I see any blood I'm out like a light. I once saw a man with a bag of transfusion blood hanging on a drip in the oncology ward, next thing I know I'm staring up at two concerned nurses faces looking down on me. Definitely wasn't an option for me

I just wanted not to be poor, to be different. I just wanted peace at home and for no one to pick on me at school as life wasnt a bed of roses at home.

It was so foookin painful and life long lasting standing out!

Nowadays school uniforms are neutral colours so its not so obvious but in my school, we had this distinctive school uniform that had such bright colours when new. We were poor so I had to go to the school once term had started and get a used uniform that had faded many times in the wash....EVERYONE knew when I started that school that I had got my uniform from the 'office'....

On top of that, I turned up late because of chit at home on my first day at 'upper'school and I had no pencil case or school bag or anything. My face still burns at the shame I felt and I get upset over it. I suffered social anxiety for so many years.

I also never spoke much but wrote like a demon. I became very emotional and I am still that way now. I feel things deeply. I still write and read and listen to music like a demon and gravitate towards those who are helpless and on the fringes of society.

Not a 'Rock Star' but I often fantasized about being a Country Star seeing as I was drowned in that music when young both Country and Irish.

I still love it now and play it often although I have no desire to be a Country Star anymore:P

    A Stunt Man.....

After watching The Fall Guy I would go at back garden in the pitch dark and jump over stuff, doing shoulder rolls as I landed and then pulling out my gun (wasn't real - but it did have some caps). I swore some day I too would have a cool pick up truck and a hot blonde like Jody riding shotgun.

Think when it came to my stunt man career, I peaked in that back garden... still a smidgen of hope I'll drive a pick up truck someday though... but Heather Thomas, even at 59, is still out of my league... holy schmoley!

Everyone can. You just have to learn and practice :) But you don't have to sing to enjoy music of course :)

That's one side the other side banking, IT, medical receptionist ( she wanted to be an Irish dancer had like 150 trophies!)

Well done, there was another lady around these parts for a while who posted about being both a chef and a writer too. Must be a common career choice for people!

I remember we had a Spanish couple call to the door looking for a place to pitch their tent for a few nights back when I was 7 or 8. They stayed out in the field behind the house, lovely people!

For a few months after that I told my mother I wanted to be a tourist when I grew up :pac:

So many things. When I was very small I wanted to marry a prince and become a princess. I remember talking with my little friends in the yard of my primary school about my princess dream :) Next up it was an archaeologist. I wasad about dinosaurs. During my teens it was a writer, a band manager, a vet, a social worker, a psychologist, moving very much in to helping others.

Where did you get a job as a rural pest controller.

Or maybe you were a guard in rural Ireland.

Had my head in the clouds for most of my childhood. Wanted to be a professional tennis player, then a writer, then a singer, then back to a writer again - at which point I decided to study Journalism and ended up working in broadcast instead.

At 31 I still don't know what I want to be. Thinking a lawyer is next on the list.
