    i don't really think they would have needed to "step up" the war anyway seeing as the mainland campaign was having an effect.

    The campaign ultimately failed because it was sabotaged from within. If the leadership had been totally devoted to armed struggle by the late 1980's there's no telling what may have been; but by then it was clear that a towards constitutionalism had already been embarked upon. The potential was there for an unprecedented assault against British occupation.

    Well, for starters, Omagh would have been all theirs instead of belonging to some faction. I'd say there'd have been 3 more La Mon, 4 more Warringtons and a Shankill Road?
