I'd probably also personally take Bayonetta over Xenoblade.

Talking about not getting into games I'm having a love/hate relationship with Zelda. Sometimes I think it's great, other times I feel it's inferior to something like Witcher 3 and I don't understand the hype.

Probably about 10 hours in at this stage, will keep going with it.

Trapped in work without even my Switch to keep me company -_-

Well, even if it is inferior to the Witcher 3, is that such a bad thing? I've both games inside my top 10 of all time, with the Witcher up there vying for the top spot and BOTW a few spots back maybe. That's after playing hundreds of games (possibly thousands) over 35+ years as a gamer! Both still absolutely EPIC games, truly wonderful.

Guess we're spoiled a little! The Witcher 3 appears to have a more dense and richer world than BOTW but then again I'm only about 10 hours in with BOTW. Played a bit more of BOTW last night and am definitely in my love phase again, put it to sleep just as I approached
the bridge going to Zora's Domain, I appear to be on track to go to my first Divine Beast
so I'm probably only scratching the surface of it.

I'm in work but at least I can access Boards from my office!

It was a hairy drive into work for me, and I'm not looking forward to the drive home either, this evening.

While I'm an office bound manager I am still classed as a frontline nursing staff, so I could be "re-deployed" to areas over the day, into the evening.
    We shall wait and see.

    Tomorrow should also be entertaining!

You could try doing some work :P

Ah people of this thread ... I've been working from home until now, but the Switch is within reach without moving my a*se of my chair. Don't get me to "work" from home! ;-)

Realistically, if I was at home I'd be given work to do!
    Quieter here!

Might bring the 3DS tomorrow, my son would shoot me if I brought my Switch.

Oh I have plenty to do, patients cancelling left right and center and now the CT machine is down. The Switch would be just sitting in my bag looking sadly at me, but I can dream at least. :D

I'm going to wait for a year or two, and they release one with a bigger screen, then I'll go for it

It already has a bigger screen. Just pop it in the dock. :)

The screen size is fine but I would prefer a 1080p screen and a larger battery in a slightly bigger form factor to accommodate the bigger battery.

Do you think it needs the better resolution? I think it's fine as is and I've had no battery issues yet but a bigger one would be no harm.

I have no battery issues either as mine is only a few days old but regarding the screen yes I believe it could be a higher resolution one as you can see each pixel easily. The bigger battery idea was as you would need one with a higher resolution screen.

Oh I mean I'd keep the current resolution and increase the battery size. That should give a good increase to battery life.

Saying that I brought the Switch to IKEA last week, played Zelda at full brightness to and from while herself drove. Still had 30%+ getting home.

I've said it before, the bezels on the Switch are a little big, the XL version won't be a physically bigger system, it'll simply let the display fill more of the available space.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,120 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

Higher resolution would require quite a lot higher processing power, which would drain the battery in no time.

Probably for a potential v2. They’ll likely have a faster CPU/GPU available which can render 1080p with the same power drain as the current one renders 720p, and the platform (and all the games) already supports multiple resolutions very well depending on being docked/undocked. So all they’ll have to do is put a 1080p display and get the software to render images at that resolution on the new console.

I don't think they'll bump the mobile screen resolution from 720. Getting to hit 60 fps has been more important to developers so far and seeing as PS4 and XB titles aren't managing to get 1080/60 consistently I don't see Nintendo developers & friends going after that target this gen with a mobile chipset. A bigger battery and less bezels would be a given though.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,811 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

Leave the resolution as it is, as with the 3DS, the res of the screen didn't trouble people as long as the games were great, and we are sorted for that on the Switch.
In fact, as it stands, it gives better battery life and lower demands on the chipset.

That could be one more reason to bump up the res if/when a new model with a faster CPU/GPU becomes available though.

If they don't do that, there will be a tendency for games to run with a good frame rate on the new/premium Switch and to be sluggish on the old/budget model which would frustrate 10s of millions of owners. Games will still need to be optimised to run smoothly on the original Switch, and if it is the case this potential new model with more processing capability should have no problem to also render them smoothly at a slightly higher resolution in handheld mode.

Way to early to introduce a schism like that into the install base. Things are going well. That could dampen enthusiasm for the brand. In a year's time, maybe. It may be a portable platform but that doesn't mean they should treat it like a mobile phone (i.e. yearly refreshes).

Agreed ... not saying it will happen in the short term. Just saying if they are thinking of releasing a V2 with bumped up processing power, increasing screen resolution does make sense and would be very smooth and easy given the hardware and software architecture. Maybe some times in 2019 or early 2020.

I guess the good thing about any plans to introduce a new revision is that they would surely need some sort of save migration functionality so that owners of Switch 1.0 would be tempted to buy the new rev. And if they do that they may as well introduce some sort of micro SD or cloud save backup for everyone.

That is my biggest annoyance with the Switch, inexcusable these days. Apart from that I think it is a great piece of hardware.

If Nintendo offered some sort of upgrade scheme where you could trade your current Switch to a newer model for €100-€150 then early adopters wouldn't feel to put out.

It would also give Nintendo loads of refurbished machines to sell around €225-€250.

Yes agreed cloud back-up should be considered a must have and hopefully you are right.

Having said that, they could also just say that a feature to transfer save data to a new console already exists so nothing more is required: http://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/27394/~/how-to-transfer-user-and-save-data

Ask the Wii U owners how they feel about being the REAL early adopters of the Switch :D (he said as he picked at the festering stitches)

Yours is a delightful, utopian vision of how things could work, but you're in the Grimdark world of Nintendo hardware revisions now, chum. It won't happen. Putting my facetious example aside, look at the 3DS vs n3DS. (not just the lack of a trade back scheme, but hte success of the product because it arrived a decent way into the lifecycle, nabbing both repeat sales and new sales)
