    Tropes and cliches you say?

Like mommy issues? If anything, Mindhunter vindicates everything in Mr Merc.

I just found the latter far more enthralling. The acting in Mindhunter is Fair City standard at times.

I really enjoyed Mr. Mercedes and Brendan Gleeson's performance, but it doesn't come close to Mindhunter. The latter being far superior in every way. I find Mindhunter to be far more enthralling.

There's a lot more suspense in this than Mr. Mercedes tbh. They're both very different tv shows.

Similarly, I much preferred Mindhunter to Mr. Mercedes. They are very different shows so I'm not sure where the comparison comes from.

I can't see why people are comparing these totally different shows.

I loved both. As a King reader I thought Mr. Mercedes was done well. Glesson was outstanding.

Mindhunter was a slow burn and maybe not what people were expecting. Holt mccallany kept me watching. Great show. If they follow the premise of Denis Rader BTK that they hinted at in the first season it could be great.

    A truly scary, chilling case.

They’re tv shows, about murderers, that were on very recently.

I actually used that, the Deuce, and Midnight Sun as examples of shows lately I thought were far far better than this run of the mill thing.

Can’t understand it’s popularity, but I guess Ed Sheeran is the hottest musical act right now too.......

It's popularity is like most shows released these days, people who watch it when it's released will generally think its excellent, people who only watch it a few weeks after release will have read the reviews, heard the hype, listened to their friends talking about it, built up their hopes and ultimately be disappointed.

    Yeah you’ve got a point.

Some people in this thread honestly seem to think it’s in best ever status though, baffling.

    “Best show in years!”

“Show of the year hands down”.

It wasn’t even the best show of the day for me. Pure and utter average.

Why do you have such a problem with people's opinions? The show clearly isn't up your street for whatever reasons, but why do you need to validate this so much?

I happen to think it's the best show in a couple of years due to performances (not necessarily of the lead), pace and storytelling, suspense and the fact I think it's far more sophisticated a drama Mr. Mercedes (which is an entirely different show so it's pointless to compare the two really) and more sophisticated than anything I've chosen to watch over the last few years.

I don’t have a problem with them, I am just providing an alternative opinion. This thread is for people who watched it, I watched it. I am adding my opinion. That’s how the internet works. Why do you and 2 others feel the need to have an issue with me saying mr merc was so much better?

Sophisticated? In what way exactly? I really didn’t see anything sophisticated about it. Every scene was cliched to the extreme, the dialogue and execution was pure hammy and banal by and large.

Watched about 40 mins of ep1. Very disappointing, dull main character (FBI guy), unrealistic dialogue esp between him and his girlfriend. Definitely don't share the interest on here!

Because the John Patrick poster said that fair city Mr Mercedes and some other shows are all better in every way than mind hunters.... Go figure.

Why someone would. Come into a thread about a show they didn't enjoy and keep posting there is beyond me.

It's not like he even has a discussion it's just all. Fair city is better lulz.

I just ignore those kinds of posts now.

Yet you’re clearly not ignoring them duhhhh :pac:

Yeah why would someone comment on a show they watched!!!

It’s sophisticated by its very nature - the inception of behavioral analysis in the what’s probably the world’s most famous specialist investigative unit. The methods and psychology of how they deal with certain individuals based on their crimes and how they draw them out to get even the smallest piece of information in order to form a theory or a profile.

Also, how the characters evolve and how the overall story is unfolding - it’s slow, detailed, layered and intense.

I agree with "the John Patrick poster" :D

Yea I didn't like this at all. The acting was just so banal and empty. There was nothing at all about it that would leave you in any way invested in the characters. A complete lack of action or anything gripping. I get that the emphasis was more psychologically inclined but tbh it was just boring and contrived shlte. I've seen better acting in my work training videos.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,549 ✭✭✭jcd5971

As said before different strokes for different folks. Your entitled to your opinion and entitled to express it.

But saying acting is as bad as fair city or a work training video.

    I just don't get it.

You obviously aren’t very adept at reading are you, jcphtyhb?

Cos I never said Fair City was better, but the standard of acting at times was Fair City standard. Honestly, cardboard is being kind.

You’d get the same emotion picking 2 strangers off the street to read lines as you would out of many of the scenes involving Holden and the girlfriend.

For one so adept at reading could you please point out where I quoted or referenced you?

Someone made a fair city comparison so I referred to it in a general observation.

I don't see the need for personal attacks here, why are you so upset?

I think that's more deliberate acting than bad acting.

Deliberately bad acting? It’s bad either way, whether by direction or writing or performance

No the lack of emotion from their characters is a deliberate personality trait for both of them.

Oh right! And they were deliberately meant to show a complete lack of chemistry in those scenes they were supposedly getting together.

Call a spade a spade, it was dreadful.

I'm only hoping the girlfriend is in it so a serial killer can kill her to get at holden

Do they use this technique in Fair City as well?

No, I enjoyed the show. You didn't which is fair enough. I was just giving my opinion on what you perceived to be bad acting I perceived to be deliberate character traits.

You’re defending wooden scenes saying that the characters were playing wooden characters.

Absolute horse. Holden and Tench scenes have more romantic sexual chemistry than Holden and the girlfriend. Even Holden and Ed have more sexual chemistry together :pac:

Enjoyed the series, quite liked the way the main character was unemotional with his girlfriend and when they split up it was so matter of fact, I think there is more to come from that in regard to his past.
He really is a cold fish lol
I’m expecting it to improve in the next series

    The internet isn’t for everyone

Well to be fair she cheated on him and then dumped him on her porch, so you know, maybe there wasn't much chemistry there...

As I said I enjoyed it, that's my opinion. I'm not defending anything. Your of the opinion it was a poor show. Mine is it was good.

If we wanted to figure out who's opinion was more correct we could look at the fact that the show has been roundly applauded by the public and critics alike, if we were so inclined.

The show is objectively bad, hashtag cancel the second series.
