Interesting to note the other athletes who achieved the Euro standards within qualification window (not Irish Q time set by AAI):

    Mark English - 800m - 1.46.99 (last year)
    Kieran Kelly - 800m - 1.48.82
    Ciaran O Lionaird - 1500m - 3.41.41 (last year)
    Barry Pender - HJ - 2.26

    Joan Healy - 60m - 7.41 (last year)
    Molly Scott - 60m - 7.41
    Claire Mooney - 400m - 53.53 (last year)
    Siofra Cleirigh-Buttner - 800m - 2.02.97 (NCAA commitments in US)
    Rose-Anne Galligan - 1500m - 4.11.07 (last year)
    Claire Tarplee - 1500m - 4.15.14 (last year)
    Emma Mitchell - 1500m - 4.15.32
    Michelle Finn - 3000m - 9.12.61

Do all these have the Irish Q time or just the Euro time ?

No this was the list taken from the EUAA website of list of qualifiers. Not trying to start a debate one whether they should/shouldn't be sent as has usually cropped up from these simple highlighting some of the performances within the qualifying window and the depth of quality beyond just the 11 being sent.

Are Barr and English injured or are they skipping this competition?

I'm guessing Barr is going to focus his energies on the World Outdoors later this year. English has a stress fracture.

Barr surely would be a a threat at 400...athletes picking and choosing what championships they represent our country in should be a no no. Is Barr doing this?

I think he has a snowboarding holiday booked which clashes ;)

Barr's time this year has him ranked 24th this season (nearly 0.3 behind Gregan) in an event that is not his speciality. AAI set out guidelines for expression of interest for championships which must be completed by any one wanting to be considered for team selection.

This has spawned from NCAA commitments etc and was a positive move in not having younger athletes over raced and traveled during their formative years. It's a view of positive personal development of our athletes. Remember Barr is one of the few Irish athletes that gets a DL invitation so opting out of early season races can be a smart move from him and his coaching team.

The Konstanze Klosterhalfen 1500m report from the German indoors is pretty special - she ran a completely solo 4:04.91 (an outright 2 sec pb) winning by 20+ seconds.

I don't know if she'll be in the mix in Belgrade but with 2 u20 euro xc champs on the bounce and 32:24 for 10k last March at 19, it'll be interesting to see what event she'll end up running in 5 years time, if she's still around. In her favour is the fact that her progression over 1500m has been quite linear.

Coverage on BBC, I don't know what RTE has planned

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,370 ✭✭✭pconn062

Gregan through into 400m semis, had a tough enough heat with Maslak in it and only top two automatically going through. Denny and Healy didn't make it but Healy was close and had possible cause for appealing as there was some rough and tumble at the bell. Curran didn't get through 800m heats. Tomás Cotter, Flaherty, Mageann and Reynolds all up tonight I think.

No grounds for appeal I'm afraid. That's 400m running indoors, its carnage. If anybody has grounds for appeal it's Rosolova who got tripped. The French girl has been reinstated so Phil Healy back down to 4th, so well off qualification in the end.

Thought Sinead Denny ran well from a rotten lane. She was drawn in lane 6 last night but they did a complete redraw and she was the only one in lane 1 across all the heats. Despite that she was close to a fastest loser spot. She'd have managed that if in the outside lanes. Just highlights that indoor 400m is not a level playing field.

Looked like hard hard work for Gregan in a slow time for him. Hard to see him going further really.

Mageean qualified as 3rd fastest loser. Looked poor I thought. Wouldn't hold out much hope for a medal.

Hasn't had the same zip in the legs in the closing stages that I'd like to see. Don't think it's been there for a long time. If the final is anyway tasty she won't have it in the mix at the end, needs to be as handy a pace as the outdoor final in Amsterdam for a medal chance. Hope she proves me very wrong and no better girl for it. Would love to see her back to Moncton Mageean.

To be fair, she ran 4:01 last year. If in top form I'd give her a great chance of medalling off any sort of pace. She's not in top form though, and hasn't looked great all indoor season.

John Travers stopped at the start of his heat, thinking it was a false start.

Everyone else bar one other runner kept going, what a mess.

He got pack with the pack but soon dropped off.

Very, very strange. Definitely sounded like a recall to me but Travers should have kept going anyway until they pulled them off the track.

A very disappointing day all round for the Irish so far.

Tomás Cotter DQ'ed for stepping off the track which is a complete joke as the Swede completely cut him off and then fell on his arse, then Tomás had to hurdle over him to avoid falling.

Doubtful. Don't know the criteria, but looking at the last couple, the venues all have north of 10,000 capacity. The AIT arena's capacity is 2,000

That didn't actually happen - he responded to an ill-informed comment that suggested John Travers was the only person to react to the recall gun. He wasn't. There were two athletes that responded to the recall gun, both of whom were advanced to the final.

John's response was incredibly measured in the circumstances and anyone can read it on the AI fb page and judge for themselves.

But calling someone "a fool" is just personal abuse and I'm really not sure why you'd feel the need to go to the trouble of posting personal abuse of a senior athlete representing his country on a forum dedicated to athletics/running.

He said it is easy for you to be a critic from your seat at home. He could have quite easily put his hands up that he should have continued on like the other athletes. He said after the race that it be doubtful he be reinstated as he ran a slow race. I even ran as a juvenile, if there was a false start and you went ahead to keep on going and then when you are called back to walk back backwards.

That doesn’t sound like “a rant” by John and his decision to stop on hearing a recall gun doesn’t make him a “fool” - he wasn't the only athlete to stop.

The appeal officials saw it that way (as did most comments I saw). They should have been called back. If John had hared off at the start and wasted 200m of effort and they had been called back, some other captain hindsight would be weighing in online on that too.

My issue is with your tone, not the specifics of the argument. I just think it's disappointing to see someone involved in athletics calling one of our senior representatives a fool.

Criticise his tactics or performance, but name-calling is a bit, well, juvenile.

All of the athletes responded to the recall gun. Only two were at a disadvantage as they slowed right down and lost touch with others. European athletics saw that the recall gun firing was a mistake and agreed that both Acala and Travers were at a disadvantage as a result. If it was just a bang from somewhere else you might ask questions as to why they stopped but it was the recall gun that was fired. On that basis they should have easily stopped the race by 200m at the latest.

Really hoping Ciara Mageann can pull something out of the bag tonight. She hasn't looked her best this indoor season but if the pace is slow she has a chance.

Very difficult interview with Ciara there, not nice to watch.

On that point, I don't see the point of sticking a microphone in an athletes face straight after a bad race, especially when an injury/illness is involved. It's all a little voyeuristic. Even an hour later would give her a chance to get her thoughts together.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,503 ✭✭✭✭Krusty_Clown

Really unfortunate for Mageean, but hopefully she'll bounce back and come back stronger over the next few months. Great to watch Muir who is just astonishing. Really impressive to see her take on the race like that and run so strong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,697 ✭✭✭Chivito550

It's been a grim championships for us sadly. The only real positives are the performances of Ciara Neville and Phil Healy in the 60m.

Hope Ciara is ok. She hasn't been right this indoor season as mentioned. Hopefully nothing major in her Achilles. Travers was absolutely shocking this evening, let's call a spade a spade. Difficult situation for him yesterday but he's far better than what he showed in that final.

Loved seeing Laura Muir dart away from that official who tried to stop her doing a lap of honour!

I commented on this on twiter. Bad form from RTE - give her 30 f*cking minutes to get her head together, get a hug from someone, have the injury checked out quickly. She was distraught - and could barely form a sentence as she held off the tears and frustration. Awful from RTE, didn't like that at all.

It does not work like that. All athletes have to walk through the mixed zone. First are TV and radio, then written press. There's no way David Gillick should have to run after her to the team hotel later to catch an interview, and no way will she stick around for an hour for an interview she'd rather just get over and done with. It's not just RTE she has to talk to, it's all of the media including written press. It's an obligation one has as an athlete and she knows this and I can't imagine she would have any issues with it either. There's people there just trying to do their jobs.
