That's just opinion though, and there are plenty of classic musicians who created masterpieces in their early 20s.

Aren't the majority of bands/musicians at their most prolific periods in their 20s?
Can't think of many that peaked later.
I've a feeling that in 10 years time, folks will look back on Ed the same way as they do with David Gray or Damien Rice and not as a Springsteen, Neil Young or David Bowie.

just your typical soppy lyrics from a boyband wannabe

    White lips, pale face
    Breathing in snowflakes
    Burnt lungs, sour taste
    Light's gone, day's end
    Struggling to pay rent
    Long nights, strange men

No just poor lyrics from someone trying to tackle the tough subjects he has no real understanding of.

He's technically proficient at creating his sound though, and seems like a nice chap.

Music is subjective. Let people enjoy things.

    True.

BUT the right to ponder aloud why people like something you see to be mediocre still stands. Seeking reasons or explanations from those who do perceive it to be good hardly impinges on their original enjoyment. Nothing truly good ought to fear evaluation or re-examination.

I dunno about that, I've heard shite singers that are genuinely objectively shite.

    Christy Moore?

You may well end up being right but his current trajectory is closer to the last three you mentioned. Not saying he's as good but his sales are more in line with theirs than the likes of Rice.

Incidentally Springsteen was actually a late bloomer, think he was well into his 30s before he had widespread success? Not sure on that will have to look it up.

Average singer no doubt but he's an excellent song writer and good performer.

Terrible performer(well for croker anyway) went to see him just him on stage with a guitar which is ok for a small intimate venue like vicar street, but if I'm paying 100 for a ticket you want some sort of show put on, only have to look at what you get from u2 Coldplay etc

Please don't compare Ed Sheeran to Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen or David Bowie.

Pretty much everyone could appreciate their music whereas 99% of Sheerans fans are women and most of his fans are probably teenagers as well.

He's also a rags to riches story which people love. From busking on the streets to selling out gigs in seconds.

Hardly. He's from a comfortable middle class background. Busking would have been a choice, not a necessity.

Yeah I know he wasn't starving or anything. But for a young musician they would definitely take inspiration from his story.

I would compare him to those in the most important way, record sales and the success of his tours. In that regard he's not there yet but he's relatively young and new. Plenty of time to reach that level of fame.

The majority of any artists fans are teenagers, they are the people who buy the music and go to the gigs. That's the reason why, in 30 years, the same people who are going to Ed Sheeran this year will complain about the state of music. And so the cycle will continue.

No sense of humour on boards any more. Everybody has to get a dig in.

He's more David Essex than Bowie or Neil Young.

As much as I wish you were right he's already way ahead of David Essex in sales and number ones!

He's marketed well, The Monkees sold more albums in the 60s than Bob Dylan for the same reason.

David Essex is still the more relevant comparison.

Birds goin on about how good looking he is. A fat ginger lad with kinda froggy eyes, wonder would they say that if he worked in Tesco

What are you on about? I have not ever, not even once, heard any woman say that they thought Ed Sheeran was good looking.

He took a break, The complained about having to learn his songs again... Would not count that as a good performer. Maybe they should all drop the ear pieces.

He said it took him a day to relearn the words. It's not uncommon for artists to need to relearn material they haven't played in a while.

€86 a ticket seems overpriced for a man on a stage strumming a guitar singing silly songs about tripping over himself at 6 years old. Like I already said if there are fools willing to pay he may as well charge them. He must be laughing all the way to the bank.

Don't get why he is so popular either. Then again other people probably don't get my taste in music.
