I'm a non practising Catholic, who questions some of the dogma.

I agree with the priest making the complaint because the original remark was designed to offend Catholics and belittle their beliefs.
It was a joke, making things funny is a comedians job. Why do Catholics have to assume that anything said about catholics that isn't positive is an attack? the church shouldn't be above ridicule.
You will never hear guests on RTE make offensive remarks about other major religions, possibly because some of their adherents tend to respond more robustly than the priest in this case.
Yes you do, all the time. The word Muslim is rarely mentioned in a public radio show without someone labeling them all as murderers. The religion of refugees is always used as an excuse not to help them because we'll just end up like Germany.

I agree with the priest making the complaint because the original remark was designed to offend Catholics and belittle their beliefs. And RTE and the simpering Tubridy gave them a platform to do that. You will never hear guests on RTE make offensive remarks about other major religions, possibly because some of their adherents tend to respond more robustly than the priest in this case.

I would also support an Imam making a complaint in similar circumstances. Or a Rabbi or in fact any other religious leader.
This particular belief among others requires belittling as it is entirely nonsensical. All religions are open to ridicule. How anyone can believe is beyond me.

He's of course entitled to say what he likes, but when he says it publicly then he should also expect a reaction. I think it's important to react to Catholic propaganda merchants spreading nonsense. Of all the things to react to like, a comedian calling the eucharist haunted shows that the church still hasn't gotten over the compulsion to try and control what we think and how we express ourselves.

Or the fact most people care little for what they say at all. If you replace Jesus in the bible with the name harry potter it still makes the same sense. Just like if you change harry potter to Jesus in those books.

I disagree with your first comment, simply because I think to belittle people's beliefs is actually not funny. I suppose that's a subjective view, but there you go.

As to your second point, perhaps you watch or listen to more of RTE than I do, but I have NEVER heard anyone openly ridiculing Islam. I have heard people referring to Muslims terrorists, but they are usually taken to task by the host before they can make the distinction between Muslims and Muslim terrorists. I do not support the notion that all Muslims are terrorists, no more than I support the view that all Irish people are terrorists. The most recent 'debate' about refugees coming to Ireland was dominated by claims that they would be getting accommodation over the heads of our existing homeless. Of course I only listened to RTE news about it, perhaps you heard the bit about their religion on another programme.

Peoples beliefs must be very shaky if it cant take criticism. Why would a believer care what someone says ?

I think beliefs need to be questioned. I don't think people should have the right to believe whatever they like and then impose those beliefs on others by trying to get comedians gagged for making jokes, or forcing women to carry children they don't want because an ancient tribe from the middle east thought it was a good idea.

I don't listen to RTE at all. I listen to newstalk, I hear what people say on here and in the real world. I listen to the likes of Dawkins online so I've heard plenty of ridicule of not only Islam but of Christianity.

Both religions worship the same god, for gods sake. They both have a history of oppression and waring. Christianity seems quite mild in Europe because most people don't believe half of it.

To a certain extent, advbrd has shown that his/her focus is on Catholicism, so you are in effect preaching to the converted:D

Buddhists say that the questions of whether the universe is finite or infinite, eternal or not are all unanswerable.

Good point- it highlights that many keyboard critics of religion tend, in my experience, to know very little about that they which are criticising.
We all have our shortcomings I suppose. We are not all Dawkins or Hitchens; although some pretend to be

    Actually your right.
Do you know who are absolutely ridiculous?
    Atheists
What a crowd of absolute knobheads
Phones set to alert if anyone mentions God on boards anywhere except A&A or Christianity so they can jump in with their old smelly hackneyed spaghetti monster blah blah blah
Superiority complexes crippling them with social anxiety
Boring people to death at parties for at least 50 years
It's just as well that they agree that nobody has the right to be offended or I guess this post would get reported pdq!

Not at all. My comment relates to the topic of this particular thread. I think all religions are ridiculous, not too fond of christianity but I have a particular dislike of islam.

You only ever see atheists being picked on around here. You wouldn't have a go at the agnostics, would you? Why not? Because the atheists are an easy target, that's why.

I completely agree with your very first sentence. I get what your saying in your second sentence, but I'll respond to it bit by bit:
part1, yes I agree, no one has the right to force their beliefs down the throats of everyone else.
part2 : by trying to get comedians gagged for making jokes - but that's not what I believe is happening here. I believe a complaint is being made for the deliberate ridiculing of religious beliefs
part3 : forcing women to carry children they don't want etc. I don't believe the way people feel about abortion is influenced by their religious beliefs, but I could be wrong and would agree with you if that was the case.

Dawkins is consistent in his treatment of ALL religions, so he gets a 'by'.

Both religions worship the same God. And Judaism. For me, I respect all religions and none. I've stood and offered up prayers at a Shinto Shrine, I've stood respectfully before a shrine in a Hindu household (I was a child in Birmingham 50 odd years ago) because I respected the beliefs of the family present. I attended religious sermons in a Presbyterian house of God. And every Sunday, I went to Latin Mass. This is what makes me what I am. Whatever that might be:D

Very good, I have quoted you out of context, apologies.

However, if you used the word 'challenged' rather than 'ridiculed', I would understand that and even agree with it. Just to be clear, I'm not talking semantics here, I'm talking about the sentiment.

I completely acknowledge that my fallback position would ultimately come down to "well, because I actually believe it" and that its not logical, but it is in fact probably more hope than faith. Interestingly, while typing this response I note that Google thinks Christianity and Islam should be capitalised.

RTE Is a TV station and a set. Nothing to do with any Religious place. Most people here would think it was bad form if the guy turned up into a church mid mass shouting “Hunted Bread.”
