Live 10 miles outside Sligo, no snow on ground when I got up this morning, temp had definitely dropped, had started pissing down with sleet just as I was leaving the house.. Snow/ Hail/ Sleet on and off all day here in town

The tiniest bit of sleet here in Galway city earlier. That's it.

There is a tin of snow in our attic with the christmas decorations. I will break it out later if need be.

As an aside, the sledge I bought in 2010 has been cleaned off and ready for yet another snow disappointment.

Sun shining out here in Dublin.

A light dusting on the mountains here but, to read the weather forum you'd swear be were in a blizzard with four feet of snow. Even overnight should be fairly harmless.

That's it you've jinxed it. No snow for you. You need to put it away in the most annoying place possible and then the downfall happens!

It snowed briefly in blanchardstown 2 hours ago. Too light to stick.

Nothing where I am, it was a cold dry day.

Apparently it's supposed to get milder at the weekend.

I'm on high ground in south Sligo and it's pretty bad now

It's beginning to snow again. The flakes, silver and dark, are falling obliquely against the lamplight. It's probably falling all over the island; on the central plain, on the treeless hills, falling softly upon the graveyards, upon the crosses and headstones, upon all the living and the dead....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 32,688 ✭✭✭✭ytpe2r5bxkn0c1

We had about 2 inches lying earlier but it's gone now. More forecasted, so well see.

Got up today. Put the blind up and looked out on a lovely day :) Said to the Dogs; " Look, Dogs. It's a lovely day! "

Turned round to click my mailer open. Turned back to the window and screamed; " Jesus F**king Christ, Dogs! It's Snowing like f**k out there now! " Mental! Being snowing, quite nicely, on and off too.

Just went down the stables and became bitingly aware of how badly I needed to replace a couple of doors too. Wind coming through there was ripping me apart!

Today we have had...lashing rain..., sleet...,heavy snow showers, ...thunder and lightning...just now huge hailstones and its been really windy all day. So basically weve had all the various precipitations.

I knew the show was not going to materialise ( literally ); it didn't feel cold enough for snow last night and the media are constantly over blowing any news at the slightest hint of snow. The snow is never as bad as it they say it's going to be, usually.

Counted at least 37 flakes of snow out in Cork city, we're shagged lads.

Same here near the sea in Waterford, though I hear it's snowing in Dungarvan.

    January weather in January shocker.

Heading into Kilkenny earlier and 4 or 5 snowplough/gritters went past in the other direction...trying it's best to snow here now but hasn't managed to muster much beyond the odd flurry of sleet. I'd say they're doing better on higher ground.

*puts sledge away for another year*

Hills around Limerick had snow on them this afternoon and looked lovely, but the sleety sludgy crap this evening will probably take care of that.

I had a definite pang of nostalgia for the days when we didn't instantly know everybody's everything in reading that.

The chink is just too wide sometimes.

Why were people lots of snow this morning.

It's only the media hyping it up and Met Eireann never forecast it but of course Met Eireann then get told they are crap because there was no blanket of snow all over the country.

Its absolutely mad here. Snow stopping and starting all evening. Some of it sticking. If it gets much deeper I might even be able to measure a depth. Some cars still out driving. Crazy. We are well stocked up on food since Christmas so should be OK, but cant see us venturing out for a few days yet.

Edit: Just looked out and it has started again ! Some of the flakes are quite big. Absolutely arctic out there.

Perfect snow weather. Too far below zero and it would actually be too cold to snow.. fyi.. ;-)

Yes, I'd say thats whats happening here and why it keeps stopping and starting. Right on the borderline of freezing. A car passed by a short while ago that was quite covered, which shows how bad it is at the moment in some parts. A full dusting over the whole car, with only the wipers keeping a clean patch on the wind screen. How many snow ploughs does Ireland have ?

I know, I was just saying it's not artic like. Artic is minus whatever like in Russia and places.

I got slated on the weather thread for suggesting Dublin was part of Leinster which had a yellow snow-ice warning.
Apparently Met Eireann's definition of leinster doesn't include Dublin :O

Got feck all snow here, thought it was muchly over hyped

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,452 ✭✭✭✭The_Valeyard

Dont think its the cold that's the problem.

It's the wind that comes with it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,087 ✭✭✭HellSquirrel

Snow, wind, rain, hail, sleet and glorious sunshine today in western Connemara. At any given time there was usually at least two of them going on and mostly three or four. The hail was particularly impressive, although we probably didn't need five bouts of it between 9-5.

    no snow show

Surrounded here by snow-covered mountain on all sides but the roads seem clear so I can enjoy the snow in relative comfort

    Dramatic and glorious sight.

It looked fairly icy cycling in to work this morning but there were no slips (and no snow).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 475 ✭✭jimmy blevins

SNOW BLOW, no show of snow.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,087 ✭✭✭HellSquirrel

Yikes, the car is absolutely solid with melted and refrozen hail. There's a skin over the whole thing like partly-melted packing beads.

Not looking forwards to the hill with the open water drain that overflows across the road on the way to work. It's going to be an ice rink.

Waay out in the countryside, so roads don't get salted. Got new tires and will be cautious! Surrounded by sea though, so this sort of weather doesn't usually last long at least.

Nah, he's correct, although merely below zero isn't quite enough as the temperature varies through the atmosphere. Below zero at ground level is generally enough not to have -heavy- snowfall because it's too dry. Between +3 to -2 is pretty good snow range.

It's more ice than snow this morning. The mountains are covered with a lace shawl and look beautiful but up close it's damned ice. The road is a skating rink. I think the weekly shopping will have to wait until this afternoon or tomorrow.
