    New Year, so time for a new thread. Copied from last year's;

PLEASE give some info on the race/your training/how you felt/next target etc when posting your times, so we don't end up with a boring thread of tables.

    The times are:

    400m - 1 minute
    800m- 150 seconds
    1 mile - 5 mins
    3k - 10 mins
    5k - 20 mins
    5miles - 30 mins
    10k - 40 mins
    10miles - 1 hour
    Half Marathon - 90 mins
    Marathon - 3 hours.

Well the year's already almost a day old, plenty of time to have gotten in a few races. I really should have stayed in bed instead of forcing myself to suffer through just for the sake of pointless box ticking, but I guess I'll never learn. Had a cold for the last week, and I need to be recovered enough to start marathon training soon, so it'll be at least a month before I even attempt another race. (5ks don't count, right?):o

THIS new initiative from AAI may be of interest to those targeting the shorter distances : 800m/1500m/3000m open races Indoors (Athlone/Dublin) on various Jan/Feb dates.

There is almost nothing new about this. The only difference is the addition of 800m races to Round 2 of the league. Other than that, this is exactly the same as before. We already had graded guest races at both rounds of the league and we already had graded races at AAI Games. This really is little more than rebranding in the hope of boosting numbers. Disappointing that they brand this as a "new initiative" rather than coming up with actual new initiatives.

The Dublin indoor track is new at least! :pac:

TBF, branding is the biggest hurdle (no pun intended) when it comes to athletics clubs and competitions. The "running boom" has had huge benefits for mass-participation events, but club-level stuff has seen minimal increases. Getting numbers into clubs and participating in events is both hugely important and extremely difficult for AAI, and both suffer from the perception that they are for elites (or at least speedsters).

Well if they are looking to tap into that mass participation market, then using the term "High Performance" is hardly the way to go about it.

Where are you getting "High Performance" from? The AAI article uses the phrase "Indoor Endurance" for the branding, with reference to organising "high quality"' races for athletes of all levels.

In other words, the kind of initiative (new or not) that might encourage some people around here to have a go at some of the shorter distances on the round numbers table, which I'm sure was Bungy Girl's motivation for posting the link.

New initiative or not, who cares? You've been bleating on yourself for years now about people not being interested in track. Why not go with the spirit of it?

    AAI HP Indoor Endurance Initiative

    HP = High Performance

I dont see how this will get recreational runners running track.

    Hope to be proven wrong.

I didn't say they were going about the branding the right way :) Just that re-branding isn't automatically a pointless exercise

I looked this up a while ago -

in 2007, there were 120 women competing in the senior T&F championships
    in 2016, it was 171
not doubling, but still a substantial improvement

    *didn't count the men
*relays not listed for 2007, this is individual events
*in both years, there were bound to be some women who competed in multiple events, so the real number is a bit lower

    Naas parkrun.
Happy with the time but I hope to improve it over the coming weeks.

Ran the 5k in the Armagh international 5K. Not a PB, but not too far from it either, which I was happy about in the midst of high-mileage marathon training. Just back from Ballycotton 10 mile where I took a chunk of change off of my previous PB (from the same race two years ago). Glad to see a PB after a dry-spell and a solid 24 months of training (interrupted only by two months of injury).
*There was a mid-point chip mat in Ballycotton, and this is the faster of the two splits (technically a 5 mile PB for me also). The second half is net uphill, though we had the wind behind us. First half split is net downhill, though we had a strong head-wind (26:52), so including the second split as it was uphill. Not sure if I'm comfortable with keeping the split. Might run a 5 miler later in the year.

Hoping to have another rattle at all of the targets this year, though, as always, it's unlikely that I will target the shorter stuff with specific training (400/800). If the Marathon goes to plan in a few weeks, I may give the graded meets a decent pop this year, instead of the usual lip-service.

MSB 5k. Flat, but twisty course. I ran pretty well, but it was blowy, and 19.31 felt like a poor return. General consensus:
    a slow day for racing.
Liverpool Half. Good weather, wind came into play with a vengeance over final 4 miles: relentless headwind along the promenade to Albert Dock. Paced it really well and had the strength to maintain the pace for a 77 second pb that was 6 years in the making.

5k ran at Malahide parkrun a few weeks ago. Half-marathon in Limerick on Sunday. Really enjoyed the half and was great to get back to some decent longer distance stuff after a year written off through injury, and was more than happy to take almost a minute off my PB.

Will hopefully be able to add a few more distances to the table over the course of the year.

Arghhh. 2:30.53 today in the national masters.

Could I have squeezed an extra second? Probably, I felt strong and nearly comfortable on the first lap. All a new learning curve, first 800m since 1991. Jaysus when did I get so ancient?!

Double PBs in the 800/5000m at Dublin Graded 6 last night gets me on the board for the shorter stuff. Hope to do the same at Graded 8 with 400/3000m. Doubtful I'll break 60 (by far the hardest on the list IMO), but should go under 10 in the 3000m. Not sure if I'll get to do a mile, maybe the Irish Runner paced miles will give me a chance, have run a couple of 1500m at sub-5 pace. Rotterdam, Ballycotton, K Club and the Irish Runner are the others. The National Half (RnR ) will (should!) get me the missing longer one, and will hopefully have a hugely improved time in DCM

My first time posting on one of these threads. I'd been aiming for sub-20 for a long while. My PB had been 20:06 since 2015, but hadn't run many 5k's in the interim. I'd been disappointed by a 20 min flat time 3 weeks earlier but surprised myself with a 19:36 time in Kilcock. Sometimes its good to go out at a crazy pace.

The Dublin Gradeds have added a Mile to the final meet in Tallaght next Wednesday.

Now to figure out which two to double up on out of 400m, 3000m, or the mile. Or try the triple...

Any double out of those three is madness, not to mention a triple. :P

Ah, you just think that because the the combined length is 50 times your race distance. It's only about 12% of mine :)

    Definitely go with all three!:D

I doubled up a 400/mile before and ran all 4 splits of the mile faster than the 400, and the mile slower than my 5k avg mile pace at the time. Would not recommend. :pac:

Time to pop a few numbers in here. The 800m time is from national league round 2 last Sunday. Sub 2:05 was my pre-season target. Nice to hit it on what was the last 800m race I was going to run this year. The 5 mile time is from Raheny in January. Next up is a shot at the 400m time in Tallaght on Wednesday. I might do the mile there too if the legs aren't totally b0llocksed.

Well, went for the triple in the end. PB in the 400, but a few seconds off the 60s mark (62.78). PB in the 3000, which gets me another entry in the table. Thought I was still in sub-5 shape for the mile, but execution was poor. Not certain if I could have got it anyway, but ended up getting stuck at the back of two separate groups and losing too much time over the first two laps.

Ah well, can't complain too much about two PBs in one night. Might get another chance to crack the mile at some stage, either at one of the Irish Runner Paced miles, or the ALSAA winter leagues

Adding my 400m time from Tallaght graded meet last week. First time running 400m and really enjoyed the race... though the last 80m were very wobbly! That leaves 2 more times needed for the "lifetime" 10 round numbers - the 10 mile and marathon. If I can find a decent 10 mile race during the winter, I might have a crack at that one.

I've had my eye on this slot for a while, and got it last week in the Emacs w/45 final (9th place). Funnily, I ran the heat in 2:29.6 less than 48 hours before in what I consider a far better race.
At the bell in the final (just under 72 secs) there was a brief window of opportunity to situate myself behind the leading group of four. Two things happened simultaneously; the leaders surged and I was overtaken by 3/4 athletes which meant I was hemmed in going round the bend and all the chopping of stride etc that involves. Rookie mistake, my reflexes simply weren't quick enough. Overall, the only difference it might have made was that I lost a second but more importantly, a couple of places. This is definitely a stage where you can bring yourself on. I'm really looking forward to participating in the indoors in Madrid in 2018.

Only just remembered to add my time from the National Half. Although strictly speaking, I already had the time from Rotterdam with a 1:19 first half split (followed by a 1:29 second half :o). Also get to update my 10 mile time with today's run in the Frank Duffy (albeit by 3 seconds)

Forgot to add my National half marathon time myself. Looks like the 10 mile target will have to wait till next year.

Not in the slightest chance of a sub 40 ever happening, but I had a bit of a crack at a 10K at the weekend, my first time racing this long in over 6 years, and now 50 times my preferred distance. My report is here for anybody interested.

Finally got off the mark today in Charleville. Delighted with it and the official time gives me a few more seconds than I thought had putting me within a stone's throw of my ancient PB.

Just adding in my Charleville time too. Don't see myself adding any new times this year. Closest I came was 30:06 for 5 miles a few weeks back, but I've no more of them planned at the moment.

Adding my marathon time from last week. Race report here. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057688094&page=4
A 4.52 minute improvement from my previous pb. I might improve my 5km between now and the end of the year but alas the 10 mile target will have to wait till next year.

Official time ties my PB which I'll take, bit of a mess with the race clock may have robbed me of a faster time but I'd no watch so 18:34 it is. Pretty sure tying your PB counts as PB anysay;) Which would make it my my first in years and tying my best 5k which is 4 years old. Can't argue with that!:)

Haven't updated the table in a while, and the results probably make for quite confusing (inconsistent) reading (.e.g. Half marathon slower than marathon splits).
3,000m: Had a pop at a fast time on the track for 3k, which really didn't work out. Went through four laps in around 4:50 and then blew up completely! Staggered home in a time slower than I would do 3k in a training run!
10K was my annual outing to Dunshaughlin. Ran pretty well, considering a very poor performance in the Night of 10K PBs just 2 weeks earlier (33:48), confirming that I'm a road-runner, not a track runner!
Half marathon: Did two this year, but both were marathon pace sessions. Had lined up another for a PB attempt, but injury struck and wrote-off the rest of the season.
Marathon: Rotterdam in April. Apart from the 10 mile PB in Ballycotton (sniff), Rotterdam was the only other redeeming element, in terms of my running year (though I had fantastic running experiences in the Armagh 5K, and Highgate Harriers 10,000m).

Hoping 2018 will bring some improvements across the board, and if I can get my marathon goal out of the way in April, I hope to devote the rest of the year to tackling the shorter distances (including the sub-60 400m!).

You should charge for that one, man. Or better again, pay-per-view tv deal. Imagine if it was the last of the 10 distances and you had the other 9 ticked off. I for one would part with a few of my hard earned euros for that one.

As for 2017, a 2.30 marathon isn't bad as far as redemption goes.

It's gas that it's the one that has always alluded me (though to be fair, I've rarely been in a position to try in recent years). I can tick off any of the other ones with relative ease, but I think the sub-60 requires instant power in the legs and some level of joint flexibility that makes it tougher as you get older, even if you are getting progressively faster. I just wish I had ticked it off that day when I ran 60:xx.

Just updating my half time from Waterford. A new PB for me and starting to get nudge all my racetimes in the right direction again.

I might take a shot at either the mile or 10k over Christmas, the mile might come a bit early for me to go sub-5 but might be worth a shot for the craic, not sure which one I'll go with but that will probably be me done for the year.

Delighted to finally make the table with a PB at St. Anne's parkrun this morning.
