Which Kiernan ration is that Sami?

They have a few ewe nut options

I got a few bags of the Kiernans 18% today

    IMG_7284.jpeg

Soya bean meal is well down the list of ingredients…

And I got the Kiernans as it was 18% vs Southern Milling ewe nuts at 17% - not sure it was the right choice now…

Still, maize is top, which is good feeding I think?

Wondering should I get some soya bean meal to throw on top as I’m feeding?

I always get a bit of soya bean lose and add it in to the mix. I always find it results in great colostrum.
are u enjoying being back lambing ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,079 ✭✭✭Jonnyc135

I always use that 20% Kieran nut and always had plenty of milk and thick beastings, never had lambs too big either but then again I use charlois and vendeen rams.

Yeah, I do enjoy it. Acourse it hasn’t kicked off yet, so easy to talk. But I only have a small number, so should be ok…

How many weeks after lambing would you feed the ewes, all doubles, grass is good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,349 ✭✭✭razor8

I wouldn’t be expecting hectic results from that ration. Rapeseed meal & particularly palm kennel are very poor ingredients for pre lambing ewes. Really just fillers to bulk up feed

1 thing to remember if you push too much soya meal, some of it will pass out the back door unused, some good fiber source will help to prevent this but equally important to have a second p source that digests in different place in the digestive system .

we feed a 19% cube here, it costs 350/t blown in bulk & it serves our needs , we try to provide the best bale silage we have availbe to the ewes for 3 weeks b4 lambing

@jfh once the sheep are moved to their permanent grazing they get no further meal , this could be 2 weeks for singles or 3 weeks for doubles

half way through lambing and now getting a lot of 3's after singles starting off

Since we're talking feed, I've gone organic. I see people feeding Combi crop? Barley with peas in it, before lambing. I've only ever used conventional rations so I am a bit nervous of sickening sheep with barley - I may want to feed a pound a head to ewes but at the trough I don't know how much or little each sheep is getting, also a bit nervous about milk production. Advice welcome! I think the combi crop is the cheapest option.

We've been feeding stock with wholecrop spring oats for the past few years, plus clover silage, organic hay and stock have been flying on it.

I'm permenantly gone away from fodder. It's too cumbersome for this farm. I've reduced stock numbers so they'll have more to eat off the ground. I'm wary now of sickening ewes before lambing. I've been feeding them oats since January.

    Has Zanil been discontinued?

I think it was the only product with just the Oxyclozanide ingredient.

Is the only other option to buy Levafas Diamond which also contains Levasmisole?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,349 ✭✭✭razor8

rumenil is the replacement for zanil

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 270 ✭✭Jimbo789

Target species for Rumenil is cattle. Is there any reason not to use it with sheep?

I noticed there is another dose called Distocur 34. Is this available to buy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,349 ✭✭✭razor8

not aware of any reason not to use Rumenil for sheep. Surprised it’s not licensed for sheep but it’s same product

I’ve seen distocur in a few places and see it can be bought online

what is baltinglass mart like for prices these days. Have a few hoggetts and culls and not sure to send to factory or Mart.
I’ve never been overly impressed with it as a mart.
Saturday mart is only option for me.

Not sure about Baltinglass but surprised there hasn't been any real bounce in hoggot prices as we head towards Ramadam.

It's remained steady last few weeks.

How much did lads pay for scanning a flock over 100 ewes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,487 ✭✭✭✭wrangler

Last year we had the tunnel rented to a neighbour and both ours and their flock came to near 300 ewes and he charged about 1.25.

This year he charged €2/ewe when we only had 70 ewes.

I'd like to see them at 10/kg and rising. 9/kg is too low before the pull comes on for mid season lamb.

    86 singles

    30 twins

    2 triplets

    22 empty

The empty number, I had 22 small ewes with a tested infertile ram, he tipped some of them, the rest of the empties are old ewes.

Quite a better scan than I was expecting with 3 rams, 1 tested infertile and another worked less than a week with lameness.

The trips and empties can jog on down the road now.

106 ewes lambed from 128 going average enough, the weather was horrendous at times but ewes and lambs are in very dry sheltered fields at minute mortality is 8% which is a bit annoying. i will hopefully keep it under 10% but last few years lambing in february and into early march has been horrendous with weather. what is other peoples experience of this, what do people do differently? i scanned 2.04 , so ended up with 22 triplets and 2 quads , only 20 singles i think it was. definitley thinking of changing something next year, lot of problems with old ewes only milking on one side or too thin to rear two lambs, sold a good lot of lambs off triplets too as i never chance a ewe to rear three lambs in this weather.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 371 ✭✭StoutPost

What are lads paying for an 18% ewe & lamb ration per ton?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,894 ✭✭✭Bleating Lamb

When you say you sold some of the triplets, was it on DoneDeal or to neighbours?…..given the price of sheep at the moment pet lambs could be valuable this year.

Only ever lambed from around Paddy’s day here, mainly because of having wet ground but you are correct in saying February has being a poor month weather wise recently.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,067 ✭✭✭Dickie10

35 euro on done deal, for right good strong triplets. sold smaller weaker but hardy lambs for 25 euro, i hadnt time to go round them all with feeding. had to let them off. some o;der ewes with milk on one side now developed into pets and old thin ewes who will abandon a lamb when they get out in the field so no point in that. i brought in a lamb last night nearly starved , a week old he under the red lamp since last night and tubed twice , whats peoples procedure with a lamb like that? ewe is bad auld yolk no much interest in him, think she may have done similar two years ago as a two year old hoggett when she got out. shes for hook this year

    That's 350 for 18% ewe crunch

24e for 40kg bag of soya

    18e for 20kg sweetmix hi-mag licks
