I think I had a very similar day to yourself! Just went to do night check; drys and milkers had mixed. Just turned the light off and went home; I went from one crisis to another today.

Bought a 300 litre atlas for 450 plus vat. Technician said gas gives trouble with lime and silt, and their does be silt here. Grand to have hot water again tho, It will only be on for a 3 hrs a day in 6 weeks time .
I had a tech in the yard this evening, (don't ask, it's a very long story:mad:), and he looked at the heater and said he would call in the morning with a thermostat and that was all that was wrong so I might escape without buying a whole new system yet.

Shout-out to freedom on this, he called it and was 100%;)

Different world all right, some are cribbing about having to take a paid days holidays instead of a paid days absense. Many just looking for an excuse to take 4 days paid leave.

Just checked the yard. Left water running with taps half open but all frozen. Left scrapers on all night but they're frozen now too.

Be careful tomorrow folks, hunker down and mind yourselves firstly.

It’s been -12 to -16 here since last weekend. We’re fairly used to an arctic blast every winter but this time it was particularly nasty because of the easterly wind. Absolutely everything froze solid.
+2 now and to be +14 this afternoon...

Stay safe folks. Try to think logically, which can be difficult when you’re numb from the cold.

If ye need a hand I’m sure your local vegan would be only too willing to muck in...:)

Unfortunately Public service sets precedence that are are impossible for small private businesses to follow.

Milked this morning and no water to rinse machine.
Having a cup of coffee now and thinking of hooking up a pipe to the kitchen sink in to an Ibc and draw down enough to rinse it. After that I don't know.

Every pipe in the yard frozen solid, hot and cold.
Brutal easterly wind off the sea

Every pipe here is frozen solid as well. Have no real way other than draw water from the river but the tanker we have is only used for slurry so I don't know

Have water in parlour dairy as left two running took a while to get feed to water heater going. Water in shed is frozen hoping I'll be able to get it going as pipes are under ground. 8 cows billing to top it off then and cows must walk down the yard to parlour

Same as that left 2 pipes running but they froze up.
Got the cows milked but can't wash up, might try the ibc idea later if I can't get the pipes going. The novelty of this weather wears off very quick.

The coop near me is selling anti freeze cabling with a thermostat for water pipes in 8 metre or 20 meter lenghts. You attach the cable onto your water pipe and it keeps them from freezing. You need an electrical socket obviously to plug them in. Their some job to keep water pipes flowing in these conditions

3/4 troughs full when we went milking but they might not get water till Saturday with this weather that's coming. Only gave them half the meal they usually get to stop them getting extra thirst

You can say that again. I hate to see snow coming. When I was doing the milking this morning I was remembering the delight some friends had when they heard they did not have to go to work to their indoor jobs, and yet they were still going to get paid.

And they get very upset if they think it's coming out of holidays or they have to pay back the day.

Lucky here, only a few troughs frozen on the farm. Got them going fairly quick with a blow heater

Personally myself I wasn't milking the cows in 2010 as it was earlier in the year when the bad weather hit and I had no cows calved yet.

The difference now is this cold is blowing in everywhere there's no protection from it. At least 2010 was not as windy and there was some kindness in the daytime or maybe I'm remembering the good bits.

I've pipes frozen here that never froze before. I still have water to the cows and parlour thankfully. Hearing stories of milk pump overloads blowing with people turning on pumps when they're frozen.
More people have no water going to dwelling houses. Others milking once a day.
