Sorry to hijack you but any truth that strathroy milk is heading from the south east to west cork to be processed?

Didn't know they where processing in south east. Thought it was all drawn north

Went out for cows this evening and found a healthy 5 year old dead. She was fine this morning and ate 1 kg of nuts. What do ye think?

Kanturk is in North West Cork. If the Brexit border comes into play, such relationships may have further uses.

Seemed normal. Will give a closer examination in the morning. Was hardly grass tetany?

Colic. I had a vet out to here to a cow yesterday. Only noticed her because she's usually first in. Don't know if she'll make it. Did you change nuts or grass quality? Might be tetany too tho

Ask knackery to take a look. They normally have a good idea.

Nuts are the same. Grass might be a bit rich and soft but not overly so. Will be keeping a closer eye on them tomorrow. The joys of it...

The Calmag varies through the year depending on the stage of grass growth. Check on the bottom of the feed docket if you buy in bulk or on the printed label on the bag and it will tell you how many kgs of feed should be given to ensure that enough Calmag is given.

4.5kg supplies 57g for grass tetany it says. Will up the nuts in the morning just in case.

    Maybe lead poisoning?

Might be no harm to wander around the paddock and make sure nobody's been fly tipping.

Edit: I don't think there was any lightning today?
But there were some hefty showers in places.

Knackery said it was grass tetany alright.

Just curious but how they could tell.

I thought the only way would be a blood test?

Edit: Maybe they just ruled everything else out and were left with that?

If it was teteny then the question should be how she got it?

Was there a lot of potash applied on the pasture?
An excess of potash stops magnesium being taken up by the grass.

Is your soil pH too low?
    Should you get lime applied?
Magnesium becomes more available the higher the soil pH.

Probably due to the numbers of fatalities that they deal with and the experience that have in doing same.
Over the years our Vet would ask us to request the knackery to examine a particular animal and report the results back to her.

Bloodshot eyes. Fields they were grazing got sulphur. That was the only difference.

Our vet would only do the post mortem themselves, has gone to knackary yards to do it

Been feeding a bale of silage here after morning milking in the paddock the last few weeks, and a second one at night if the weather is really bad, cows have held at 27 litres bar a blip with a load of crap meal last week but back up again once they went back on to their normal 16% nut, bf has went from 3.75 to over 4.1 and pr up from 3.4 to 3.55....
All for grazed grass in a cows diet but once you head into September no matter how good the quality of it, if you run into wet weather its feed value plummets

Back up to 16% 0.97 Ufl nut .protein high in grass but quality of itvsnd cows ability to use it will be dropping due to low dm grass .last collection 22.56 Ltrs 4.32 fat 3.78 p and feeding on average 4.1 kg

Feeding 4 kgs of a 14% pr meal.

    Yield is
    25 litres
    Bf 3.86
    Pr 3.47
    Solids/cow 1.88
    Mu 37.

Spread 20 units of urea in the last round but soil mineralization is a big factor here this last round as evident from the Mu.

Did you scan yet? Will themilk urea affect the embryos? My milk urea around 30. Pr3.67. Bf 4.25

I don't scan here and never have.

Small herd so easy to pick up cows bulling.

    Will the Mu affect embryos?
I hope not but you never can tell. I'd be hoping the cows are so far gone as too not cause absorption or abortion.

What sort of litres are you getting from the 14% meal?

Edit : if the Mu was consistently above 40 I'd be worried.

21 litres. Alot of heifers there. Happy enough. Autumn calvers will be coming in soon. Will up the meal then. Only getting 2kg so it's not really an issue
