How many on here do the Euromillions?

Just checked my Euromillions ticket and had one number....

I know a couple of people who have won small amounts on it but since the changes came in a while back i can go weeks without having any numbers at all. I know if you're not in you can't win and all that but to rarely ever even have one number is annoying.

Actually, last week i got the two bonus numbers which of course got me fck all!

    Might have done it once.

No but I'm convinced I'm going to win it

Likely my only opportunity to become a millionaire and I very rarely do it. I did win €11 last week but that's to be split :pac:

Waste of money, the odds of winning are astronomical.

No chance. I only ever do one line, 2 lines on very high amounts.

Am i better off picking the numbers myself or sticking with the quick pick?

    About 6/1 by my calculations

For my sins I do it once a week. When I first started about a year ago I often won small prizes .. 4, 6 or 8 euro, and once €50 but again since the recent changes I haven't won a thing.

Never pick yourself, always quick pick and ALWAYS do the plus. If you don't do your numbers and your numbers are drawn you may jump off a bridge. No coming back from that.

Just a quick calculation in my head ...
250 million to 1 chance of winning, is that correct ?

At least it's something - an odd small win every now and then would keep me happy.

I actually did win on a local raffle. Randomly decided to throw €2 into an envelope mainly to support a charity and few days later had a call to say i'd won €500! Forgot i'd even done it! Maybe that took up all my luck!

I once broke my ankle by falling off a toilet. Things that have a million to one chances of happening tend to happen to me. All I need to do is do it

Is that for the main draw? I'm not even aiming that high. That only brings extra hassle like family fighting, getting robbed and all that. 20k would make my year!!

Chances of getting 5+2 the jackpot

I was close worth that guess of 125 million to 1

Yeah true. Jesus, could you imagine :o

Whenever i read of lottery wins that haven't been collected i start getting paranoid it's me and i just haven't checked my numbers correctly. A couple of weeks ago there was a story of 250k not being picked up yet and it was getting to the end of the 90 days - wonder if it was.

Did it tonight, got an email to check my account, the excitement!

I won €5 so I'm -€9 better off then when I played, still have Friday to make back that €9

I spend €24 per week on the Lotto and Euromillions. It's the only thing keeping me going.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,699 ✭✭✭mud

I don't play myself but I do sell Lotto tickets in a shop so I'm hoping a customer will win and then give me nice things for being the person who happened to serve them :pac:

Pity it seems to have changed. Was considering doing in online the odd time from abroad. A few Euro for some quality daydreaming.

I do it when it's something like €100 mil, otherwise no.

My mother used to spend a fortune on lotto every week in the hope that she'd finally be comfortable :(

    It's nothing but a fool's tax.
Statistically there is a higher chance of finding that sort of money in a ditch.

Did it once. Now I just invest the money instead.

OP have you checked the odds of winning, might explain why you don't win.

People's logic on this makes me laugh.

A job I was in previously had a guy was obsessed with the lotto. He got 14 of us all to contribute €2 each for a synidcate as the Irish jackpot was over €10m.

Next morning he came bouncing in saying: '"We won €10 last night", and I said no 'We lost €18'", he thought I was going on ridiculous.

People know they almost certainly won't win.. But we know that someone eventually does. And a lot of us just pay the few euro for a daydream.

If that's funny, then so be it.

Yes, but on the other hand there are plenty out there who do all the draws each week and are obsessed with it and are throwing their money away. Often cases it's people who can't really afford it.

They could do better things with their money; even shares would be a better bet.

My general rule is I only do the lotto if it's over €10 million and euro millions if it's over €100 mil. I probably haven't done the euromillions in months. I used to do it regularly enough about 5 years ago when there would be a few jackpots €160 million plus a year. Imagine being able spend like €20 million on houses, cars, luxury holidays, clothes, some watches, give €20 million to family to set them up and still have €120 million left to live off the interest, a million a year comfortably without eating into the winnings... it's worth paying a few euro to be entitled to dream of that for a few hours!

Basically, dreaming with "If.. I will.." is a lot nicer than "If.. I would..".

    Incorrect.
A few people would and have done so, Pablo Escobar would be one example.

Knock yourself out and keep buying tickets, but don't be surprised when you don't win. I have better things to do with my money!

I think you're missing the point.
It's gambling, not investing. People do it to be magically lifted from their mundane existence and catapulted into the kind of life only dot.com gazzilionaires and rockstars can dream of. Not to help put the kids through college!

I won a one 6th share of €8500 on it once - one number away from a 6th share of 30 odd million - would have been nice.
Still, I got a nice sofa with my winnings!

I don't actually understand why people do the ordinary lotto instead of just doing the Euromillions, the odds of winning either is pretty much negligible so why not go for the one with the bigger payout?

Being an entirely random lottery - any set of numbers has the exact same chance of being drawn as any other set. 1,2,3,4,5 plus lucky stars 6,7 only seems less likely, statistically it's absolutely identical to any other set of numbers.
Quick picks, birthdays, lucky numbers - makes absolutely zero difference.

I have won more on the Euromilions than the Lotto

the Lotto has gone to the dogs since the Canadians took over

I know right. It's basically just a 50/50. Either you win or you don't.

It's not the same chance as winning alone though because of people using dates. And a quick pick means no regrets if your numbers come up when you didn't buy them.

Doing 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 or even the week before's numbers means that if you win, you get to split it with a load of people.

Is the difference not that if you pick 123456 and win, that you would have to split your winnings with the thousands of other people who also pick 123456?

Hell of a sickener to win a 125,000,000/1 bet and find out you had to split it with thousands of people!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,812 ✭✭✭✭sbsquarepants

That is a consideration alright - sequences tend to be played by more people so if yours does happen to come up you would likely get a smaller share, but the actual odds of any set of numbers coming up in the first place is identical.

That being said I'd rather be one of the 1000 people moaning about having to share the jackpot than one of the millions who got nothing!

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 249 ✭✭Galway_Old_Man

No, just the regular lotto. I'm well aware of the odds and don't spend much on it, nor am I religious about it.

To be honest when you know a few people who've won, and others who've had significant returns it does tend to quell that mathematical part of your brain ;) The way I look at it is roughly a tenner a month with a lot of daydreams of "what if?" I could lump all that on a nag at 5/2 but it's just not the same.

the reasoning is that if you a set of number in a pattern like your example there you are more likely to have to share any winnings as other people have the same idea. It makes no difference to the probability of winning as you say.

I don't get why people only do it when it gets to 90 or 100m. Is 25m not worth doing it for?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,744 ✭✭✭diomed

My last probability correct answer was in secondary school 48 years ago.

    Is it (50/5)*(49/4)*(48/3)*(47/2)*(46/1)*(12/2)*(11/1) = 139,838,160?
[50 regular numbers (pick 5); 12 bonus numbers (pick 2)]

I was thinking that - as I cashed in a €12 winning ticket - but I'm one of those people. Tend to only buy a ticket when it's in the news headlines (or the mother messages me to tell me to buy a ticket)

Actually birthday numbers do make a difference.

Well, they don't make a difference if you were born between the 32nd and 50th of the month. :D

Otherwise though, they do make a difference.

If you only play birthdays, you are ruling out a hell of a lot of numbers from your pick seeing as you will be restricted to 1 to 31. So if any number higher than 31 gets picked out, that's the main prize gone for you.
