I know a foreign lad who was shocked that we weren't tipping the delivery driver the other day. I never really thought about much it before that.

I get tipping if the delivery was free maybe, but if you're already paying for a delivery charge should ye be tipping as well?

Let him keep the change if its a few euro

Delivery drivers get paid per delivery. Its in their interest to deliver as many as possible per day. No need to tip. This Americanisation of the world is mind boggling.

I tip them if they are good looking , generally on the head but sometimes I tweak thier noses.

Here we go again. Then it gravitates to tipping in general. Taxis, hairdressers, waiters etc. Then who deserves a tip or not. Then who gets paid to do their job and who relies on tips. Then the notion of getter better service if you tip well. Then the inadequacies of a system that pays low because tips make up the balance. Then the taxation repercussions.

If you want to tip, then tip. If you don't want to, then don't. It's not a life changing decision.

If it was €18.90 I'd be handing him €20 and telling him not to worry about it when he went to his pocket for change etc.

If it was €48.90 though I'd still be doing the same with a fifty, certainly wouldn't be going near a percentage type tip like in the states.

I always do especially if it's a furniture delivery of something big or bulky. It's always appreciated and it's nice to be nice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,719 ✭✭✭✭_Brian

    No, never.
We don't ever get fast food deliveries.

But lots of currier stuff. These lads are doing a job and getting paid. I do my job and never get tips nor do I expect them.

I hate the whole tip culture, people do jobs and get paid, it's bad form if we let tips be the expected bulk of people's wages as we just end up paying twice for a service and the employees aren't given a proper wage.

This isn't America folks and we shouldn't strive to emulate their culture, it's not worth copying.

Tip a food delivery person - yeah.
Tip the postman or UPS delivery man - no way.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 990 ✭✭✭Ted111

No point tipping someone after they've done a job for you.
Unless they'll be gracing you with their service again.
Whether they did a good or bad job won't change on your retrospective tip.

To give the guy who's about to wash your car a couple of quid in advance, that type of thing, etc - makes some sense.

    Tip nobody.

    Yes, always.

Right before I slam the door I tell them next time they should make sure they get the money before they hand over the food.

    Suckers.

    This thread again?

No wonder Ireland is ranked as 'more obese'

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Not really. If it came to €19 I'd just give him the €20 but would do the same if it came to €49. There's a minimum wage in Ireland, it's not comparable to the states in the slightest. It shouldn't be up to the customer to make up for employers breaking the law if they're not paying their drivers correctly - no-one in Ireland should be relying on tips to get by. I don't tip someone in Woodies when I'm buying paint, I don't tip the guy who PC World who sells me a TV, I don't tip the girl in Subway who makes my sandwich, et. al - why should I tip someone for handing me a bag of food?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 182 ✭✭Jodotman

If my take away is 12 euro I hand them a 50 even if I have smaller change. Just love looking at the babyfaces as below when they think there going to get something decent. Don't tip, will never tip. I'm a bit of a c**t that way!

Always tip a euro or two, same with getting a car wash etc.. People doing these jobs don't do it for the love of working ****ty hours for crap money.

A couple of euro is no impact to me but I remember when I was a student washing cars at the weekend and the odd tip you got made a big difference.

Assuming you are either paid per hour, or salaried?

Food-Delivery drivers are (usually) self employed and do not get paid per hour. Your Friday night deliveroo driver doesn't get an hourly wage, he gets paid per delivery. (same goes for those couriers btw)

It's not like they are rolling in money. No one makes you tip, but it's a nice gesture to someone working a crap job bringing you food.

There isn't a tipping culture here, people tip for good service and rounding up. Compare to America where the culture is to tip even if you had a **** meal.

I dont have anyone bring me food.. If I decide to have pizza etc I get it myself..

As for delivery drivers I'd rather they were paid by the chippers for their services.. I'd actually rather people got up of their asses and went and got stuff themselves..

If I don't have to get up and get dressed and collect it myself the least I can do is tip. That said, if it's taking ages or if there's something I'm unhappy with, no tip

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,761 ✭✭✭✭RobertKK

I never tip a delivery driver.

I have made them money by ordering something, I could simply have not anything and the delivery driver would have made nothing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,674 ✭✭✭Skatedude

I'll always tip the delivery guys, Works out better in the end.
They usually deliver to me first if they have multiple deliveries. and they have no problem giving me a ring if i cant hear the doorbell from my room at the back.

I really couldn't care less what people do or don't do, but that could well be a very good lesson, in the late 90's I did deliveries for an Indian, got a delivery that was nearly impossible to find the address, no sat nav.

I was driving around back roads trying to find the house for a while, my driving was getting a bit more erratic, was on the phone to a girl in the house trying to get directions, I got my bearings and realised I had to take the left I was just passing, no cars around so I took it really fast and sharp, the food came from the passenger seat and landed at my feet, luckily none of the trays with sauces opened, the nan bread, chips and some sort of dough balls spilled all over the floor, a nan bread was under the clutch.

I quickly pulled in and wiped all the dirt and crap off everything and repackaged it like new.

When I got to the house a lovely girl came out, I gave over the food with a smile and an apology about getting lost, it was fine, happens all the time.

She paid me and gave £10 tip, I felt sick with guilt driving back.

I never order takeaways or pizzas as we don't get fast food delivered to where I live.

I now and again get grocery deliveries, but the people who deliver it are not spitting on my food.
There was never anything that was damp :pac:
They have also in the past delivered it and left it on my window sill, if I missed them and they would ring to inform me.
    Decent people...

The last few times I had a delivery which were from Amazon via DPD parcel wizard, the delivery guy would knock on the door, leave the parcel and be gone before I opened the door.
He would deliver early in the morning and obviously didn't want or expect a tip.

Ah if I was paying cash and he had >3 euro to give back he can have it most days. Unless I'm a bit short and it's not close to payday. But if I'm paying for an order say it's 20 quid then no. Delivery drivers in takeaways don't live or die on the €2 charge or that. They are paid often a fair bit per delivery and petrol/diesel money too.

Tipping in Ireland in general is stupid. It's one of those things in the US that certain people live or die on very much so. Example, a waitress in Ireland may earn 9.15p/h on a 30 hour a week not counting any overtime that's 275. In America that same waitress may only be making $4.50 p/h working 30 hours. That's a measly $135. Before taxes. And America does love them some taxes.

So to get back to the topic

    No they get paid enough

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,639 ✭✭✭andekwarhola

Usually give them 2 or 3 euro.

That said, rarely get it delivered. The local Indian(s) and Chinese are very close so I generally collect unless I've had a few drinks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,504 ✭✭✭NiallBoo

They could simply have not spit on your food if you did tip.

How will they spit in it if you already have it in your hand when you're paying?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 502 ✭✭✭richy

I do. The vast majority of places only pay their drivers 5 euro per hour. The delivery charge makes up the cost of petrol and the tip brings the 5 euro up to mimimum wage or a little over.

Worked for pizza hut 3/4 years ago and they absolutely scammed their drivers. Had to come in 12-8 Sat and Sun. Obviously no deliveries really before 5 so between 12 - 5 you were getting paid 5 euro an hour and had to do work in the kitchen. Make up boxes, help out with toppings if busy etc.

Most places you dont have to do any of that kind of work and get 5 euro p/h etc. Its because you are technically a contractor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,310 ✭✭✭✭Grandeeod

My delivery driver usually tells me to keep the odd 30c over the odds if the bill is like 10.30/11.30.

Not from the take away we go to. We only ever used two takeaways, in 7 years living in the same house, same drivers. Its about a 10 minute drive in a normal car, takes the takeaway somewhere between 30 to 60 minutes to deliver, and they always get lost, then they have the nerve to slap a fiver delivery cost on it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,221 ✭✭✭✭m5ex9oqjawdg2i

Got a stone oven 32cm pizza delivered the other night for €12. Some of my German friends commented on how expensive that was, it's cheap compared to what you get in Ireland. I tipped the driver 2 quid or something. If it's very late I don't tip, but it's a fairly ****ty paid job I think, so f it.

Tipping is pointless anywhere outside of USA.

People don't expect tips, so you will get the same service regardless of whether you tip or not.

The American purpose of tipping is to force people to be extra friendly and go above and beyond to get some extra money. But all that actually happens is that you get a bunch of people being annoying fake friendly and employers who don't pay their staff properly and customers who get guilt tripped into paying extra on top of their already expensive meals.
And whats even worse in the USA is that tipping is essentially mandatory and if its mandatory then its not a ****ing tip!

Tipping is just a very bad idea.
America should just increase their prices by 15-20% and outlaw tipping and be done with it.

Well that's bull****. Tipping in America was just a courtesy at one time, but the minimum wage is so low that employers pay staff half nothing and the rest has to be made up in tips. If you want to give someone a few extra quid for a good service it's stupid to outlaw it, but in the US and in actual fact many other countries, even in Europe (spain for one) the minimum wage needs to be increased drastically. The staff don't act extra friendly to get a tip because it's an extra few dollars in their pocket, they do it because it's the difference between paying rent or not*

Don't even say "get a better job"

I agree, but you're missing the point. As long as people and businesses keep going along with tipping then the minimum wage wont increase significantly.

There is a hospitality group in new york that has said it wants to stop tipping. And it has begun. They have increased their prices by over 20% and no longer accept tips.

Employers are using tips as a way to legally not pay their staff the minimum wage.

Tight ass employers get off Scot free from paying decent wages and passing the burden/guilt on to the customer.

The stupid thing is that they can just increase the prices on their products and pay their staff correctly with the same net effect.
