Do ye tip delivery drivers?

I know a foreign lad who was shocked that we weren't tipping the delivery driver the other day. I never really thought about much it before that.

I get tipping if the delivery was free maybe, but if you're already paying for a delivery charge should ye be tipping as well?

Delivery drivers get paid per delivery. Its in their interest to deliver as many as possible per day. No need to tip. This Americanisation of the world is mind boggling.

Here we go again. Then it gravitates to tipping in general. Taxis, hairdressers, waiters etc. Then who deserves a tip or not. Then who gets paid to do their job and who relies on tips. Then the notion of getter better service if you tip well. Then the inadequacies of a system that pays low because tips make up the balance. Then the taxation repercussions.

If you want to tip, then tip. If you don't want to, then don't. It's not a life changing decision.

If it was €18.90 I'd be handing him €20 and telling him not to worry about it when he went to his pocket for change etc.

If it was €48.90 though I'd still be doing the same with a fifty, certainly wouldn't be going near a percentage type tip like in the states.

I always do especially if it's a furniture delivery of something big or bulky. It's always appreciated and it's nice to be nice.

We don't ever get fast food deliveries.

But lots of currier stuff. These lads are doing a job and getting paid. I do my job and never get tips nor do I expect them.

I hate the whole tip culture, people do jobs and get paid, it's bad form if we let tips be the expected bulk of people's wages as we just end up paying twice for a service and the employees aren't given a proper wage.

This isn't America folks and we shouldn't strive to emulate their culture, it's not worth copying.

No point tipping someone after they've done a job for you.
Unless they'll be gracing you with their service again.
Whether they did a good or bad job won't change on your retrospective tip.

To give the guy who's about to wash your car a couple of quid in advance, that type of thing, etc - makes some sense.

Not really. If it came to €19 I'd just give him the €20 but would do the same if it came to €49. There's a minimum wage in Ireland, it's not comparable to the states in the slightest. It shouldn't be up to the customer to make up for employers breaking the law if they're not paying their drivers correctly - no-one in Ireland should be relying on tips to get by. I don't tip someone in Woodies when I'm buying paint, I don't tip the guy who PC World who sells me a TV, I don't tip the girl in Subway who makes my sandwich, et. al - why should I tip someone for handing me a bag of food?

If my take away is 12 euro I hand them a 50 even if I have smaller change. Just love looking at the babyfaces as below when they think there going to get something decent. Don't tip, will never tip. I'm a bit of a c**t that way!

Always tip a euro or two, same with getting a car wash etc.. People doing these jobs don't do it for the love of working ****ty hours for crap money.

A couple of euro is no impact to me but I remember when I was a student washing cars at the weekend and the odd tip you got made a big difference.

If I don't have to get up and get dressed and collect it myself the least I can do is tip. That said, if it's taking ages or if there's something I'm unhappy with, no tip

I have made them money by ordering something, I could simply have not anything and the delivery driver would have made nothing.

I'll always tip the delivery guys, Works out better in the end.
They usually deliver to me first if they have multiple deliveries. and they have no problem giving me a ring if i cant hear the doorbell from my room at the back.

I really couldn't care less what people do or don't do, but that could well be a very good lesson, in the late 90's I did deliveries for an Indian, got a delivery that was nearly impossible to find the address, no sat nav.

I was driving around back roads trying to find the house for a while, my driving was getting a bit more erratic, was on the phone to a girl in the house trying to get directions, I got my bearings and realised I had to take the left I was just passing, no cars around so I took it really fast and sharp, the food came from the passenger seat and landed at my feet, luckily none of the trays with sauces opened, the nan bread, chips and some sort of dough balls spilled all over the floor, a nan bread was under the clutch.

I quickly pulled in and wiped all the dirt and crap off everything and repackaged it like new.

When I got to the house a lovely girl came out, I gave over the food with a smile and an apology about getting lost, it was fine, happens all the time.

She paid me and gave £10 tip, I felt sick with guilt driving back.

The last few times I had a delivery which were from Amazon via DPD parcel wizard, the delivery guy would knock on the door, leave the parcel and be gone before I opened the door.
He would deliver early in the morning and obviously didn't want or expect a tip.

Ah if I was paying cash and he had >3 euro to give back he can have it most days. Unless I'm a bit short and it's not close to payday. But if I'm paying for an order say it's 20 quid then no. Delivery drivers in takeaways don't live or die on the €2 charge or that. They are paid often a fair bit per delivery and petrol/diesel money too.

Tipping in Ireland in general is stupid. It's one of those things in the US that certain people live or die on very much so. Example, a waitress in Ireland may earn 9.15p/h on a 30 hour a week not counting any overtime that's 275. In America that same waitress may only be making $4.50 p/h working 30 hours. That's a measly $135. Before taxes. And America does love them some taxes.

So to get back to the topic

No they get paid enough
