There will always be an asterix next to Conor for never defending the belt. You can't claim Aldo is a Paper Champ without doing the same with Conor.

Conor can say whatever he wants to save face, but he had to have known this was going to happen eventually. Its been a year without an attempt at a defense and he's taking most of 2017 off. So it would nearly be two years without a defense by the time he comes back. Surely he [and whoever advices him] had to have known he was going to get stripped of the 145 belt.]

hes making the point aldo was handed back his belt without winning it back off conor. While aldo is the 145 champ there'll always be an asterix next to it while conor is still fighting, same as the 205 belt until jones retires or is beaten for it.

I wouldn't see there being an asterix next to the 205 belt, being a champion means being professional in and outside of the cage, Jon Jones got stripped for being a twat and then when he was given a shot at the belt he messed that up also. Cormier has won the belt and was going to defend it against Jon. McGregor won the belt with a 13 second KO and was for sure deserving of the belt but if he doesn't want to head back to 145 then that means the best 145er in the world at this time is Aldo.

Jesus not this again. This thread goes around in some awful circles.

dont see how a guy who beats the current champ in such a convincing manner can be called a paper champ. the 'you're not champ till you defend' notion is silly and needs to die at this stage. Like it or not, aldo, while the current 145 champ he lost the belt and never won it back from the guy who beat him.

don't agree with this...while jones is by all accounts a gobsh!te of the highest order hes a pro fighter not a priest, whatever you think of him its hard to argue that hes not one of the best we've ever seen in a ufc cage, quite possibly the best. as long as he still has intentions of fighting in the ufc and a guy walks around with the 205 strap without beating him it will allways be in question.

Like it or not there is truth in the statement. Defending your title solidifies you as Champion. Conor refused to do it all year hiding behind the "Its not a money fight excuse".

If you want to claim Aldo is a Paper Champ for being declared Champion because Conor refused to fulfill his obligation then there is just as many arguments for considering Conor one for refusing to fulfill his obligations as Champion.

no beating a champion solidifies you as champion, have another look at the ufc's rules there...ufc were well within their rights to strip the belt but to call conor a paper champ cause he hadn't defended yet is hilariously bitter, theres no comparison between conors reign and aldos current reign, conor got the belt in a 13 second ko of the champion, aldo got it on a phonecall...also like to point out I never called aldo a paper champion, just said that untill he beats conor, there is an asterisk next to his title untill he beats conor.

I see that McGregor has been nominated for RTE sports person of the year.

Looks like it's an open vote too. Given that there are 12 voting choices anyone who gets >30% of the vote will probably win. He should get that easily enough.

Side note: it's odd that they've got two cyclists down as one nominee but only one of the O' Donovan brothers is nominated.

And how do expect Aldo or anyone else to do that when Conor refuses to defend his belt? Conor is a Paper champ for his refusals to defend his title.

If they're basing that on achievement, it's got to be McGregor and really not all that close. If they're basing it on profile, visibility and overall impact... it's got to be McGregor and really not all that close.

I've got a feeling we'll see a large section base it on "bloodsport!!!!11one" (while ignoring Conlan, Taylor, Carruth & McGuigan winning it previously) or "oh isn't he a lovely boy" (see: O'Donovan*) however. Hopefully not enough, mind.

*No disrespect meant to O'Donovan in saying that, because he really does seem a lovely boy! :D

he wasn't exactly sitting at home on the couch though was he? like it or not conor was the official ''metal and leather'' 145 champ for eleven months and in the eyes of many he still is...just cause you dont like him doesnt change facts

Ok can someone tell me what was the story behind McG having a bit of a boner at one of his weigh-in?

I'm assuming it was something he shoved down his jocks as some sort of inside joke/insult towards his opponent. Enlighten me

I wasn't looking at his knob, oddly enough.

What Frampton did was pretty good in fairness.

Paul O'Donovan won another event, world championship, by himself after the Olympics so that's why he's down by himself.

That is just ridiculous. Go watch top level intermediates. You do realise that Conor is not a training or competing boxer? He would get completely outclassed by a talented or decent boxer at amateur level. His only hope would be a fluke KO, and I could say that for any other non boxer competing in MMA. They would stand next to no chance.

Btw, just to be clear. I am, and I was talking about a boxing match with boxing rules.

He could have defended his belt. He chose not too.

Point to me where I said I didn't like him? Please point to actual proof. Just because I don't like how he reused to defend his belt does not mean I don't liek him.

It is true on Frampton, though he did win the first belt in 2014. Not to knock him in any way at all, just that it is an 'of the year' award. Granted that Conor won the 145 belt outside that, but only by days - won it on Dec 12th, last years award was on Dec 19th (so probably not even enough time to allow for the title win), so both titles land inside the timeframe or good as. Becoming the third ever two-weight champion in UFC history and (I may be wrong on this?) first to ever win a fight in three different weight classes, and to do it all in the span of 12 months... it's pretty ridiculous.

In the last year McGregor has gone from being the UFC's most marketable and perhaps most exciting fighter to having a bonafide legendary legacy while having huge numbers of the country stay up until 5am and beyond to watch do so, it's not a slight on Frampton to say Conor's comfortably ahead of him in that time.

this whole discussion is getting ridiculous, its like saying ronaldo is fairly good but in a rugby match johnny sexton would make bits of him :D

yeah he could have but rather than give jose another beating he made history, you can see the motivation behind that right? whatever way you look at it the facts of the matter are, conor was the ''real'' 145 champ till he was stripped, and jose lost his belt and got it back cause conor had better things to be at...theres no point arguing this real champ paper champ bs because it leads nowhere and the facts are there plain as day, if you continue to ignore them thats your problem

    Yes, you're wrong about that.

McGregor probably deserving. Couldn't be too many complaints if Frampton won either.

If he was confident he could beat Aldo the same way again he would have signed up to defend his belt against him.

or he might have prioritized becoming the first ever two weight champ maybe

so he just signed up for rda, diaz and alvarez cause he was scared of aldo...makes sense alright yeah...

LOL if you think it wasn't manufactured. He was allowed to not defend his 145 belt all year and was gifted a shot at 155 without beating any of the contenders. Now gets to take most of 2017 off.

look mate it seems like you're just trying to kick off an argument, I've better things to be at and frankly I'm not bothered, you said your part and I explained how you were wrong, go find something else to do and enjoy your evening.
