I went to the USA Eagles vs Maori game last Friday. The US were missing their best players and after a close first 30 minutes the Maori broke loose.

It should be a great occasion. Everyone is on a high after Saturday and also have great memories of the close call against the ABs in 2008.

    Dave Kilcoyne (UL Bohemians/Munster)
    John Ryan (Cork Constitution/Munster) *
    Billy Holland (Cork Constitution/Munster) *
    Donnacha Ryan (Shannon/Munster)
    Peter O'Mahony (Cork Constitution/Munster)
    CJ Stander (Shannon/Munster)
    Jack O'Donoghue (UL Bohemians/Munster) *
    Conor Murray (Garryowen/Munster)
    Darren Sweetnam (Cork Constitution/Munster) *
    Keith Earls (Young Munster/Munster)
    Simon Zebo (Cork Constitution/Munster)

Dave O'Callaghan (shoulder), Kevin O'Byrne (elbow), Sean McCarthy (knee), Mark Chisholm (concussion), Mike Sherry (back), Cathal Sheridan (ankle), Jean Kleyn - back for Treviso game

We're missing the above players who are all likely to play against Canada or be rested following Chicago.

    Possible team?

    du Toit, Marshall, Archer, DOS, Madigan, Oliver, TOD, Copeland;
Williams, Bleyendaal, ROM, Scannell, Taute, Wootton, Conway

Scannell, McCabe, Scott, Coombes?, J Foley?, Lloyd/Aihe Toma, Keatley, Arnold

Given callups and injuries Munster will be forced to use the academy for the back five of the pack.

Is Dave Foley back in harness after injury? The 2nd Row and backrow replacements might not be notable alright.

James Cronin to start at loosehead I reckon with Du Toit on the bench

At most, I reckon we could have 4 players released back to the Province for Fri. night - Killer, Jack, Earls and Sweetnam. I think Earls and Sweetnam will probably be made available, not because they aren't good enough, but there should be enough cover for their positions in the Intl. squad.

We could be in a similar situation that Ospreys found themselves in last week... :(

There isn't cover, unless you start players who started in Chicago. That's very unlikely.

In 2008 we had a hugely inexperienced team but they all rose to the occasion.

The maori team is very impressive but also inexperienced with 5 new caps in the squad . I think it'll be a great game and Munster have a real chance of winning

In 2008, we had the likes of Stringer, Warwick, Mafi, Dougie, MOD, Frankie, all seasoned players.

Can't wait to see this, only Munster do special nights like this. Was offered a couple of tickets by a friend but turned them down. Seeing it was sold out and not being a Munster man I couldn't help but feel I would have been taking seats from the real fans as a blow in for a big game. He sold them on to locals as far as I know.
    Can see Munster knicking it

Did you read the post I replied to?

I've made no comment on the make up of our team for Friday night.

Munster could do it, but not very confident myself given the missing players.
Still can't wait for tomorrow night though. Tickets arrived yesterday.

This would be decent Munster side:
    15 Keatley
    14 Sweetnam 11 ROM
    13 Taute 12 Scannell
    10 Tyler 09 Williams
    08 Copeland
    07 TOD 06 JOD

Don't know enough about ye'r front 5 availability - is Kleyn fit?

There's talk that Dave Foley might be back.

A possible team and we might have lads back from Irish camp to add to this
    Cronin , N Scannell , Archer , Foley , O'Shea, Copeland , TOD , JOD, Williams, Bleyendaal , ROM, R Scannell , Taute , Sweetnam & Conway

Edit - I forgot that Sweetnam & JOD was in the Irish camp.

While I'd love to have Sweetnam, JOD and Billy Holland for tomorrow night I'd much prefer them to get an Irish cap.

Munster Side To Face Maori All BlacksDirector of Rugby Rassie Erasmus makes four changes to tomorrow night's historic encounter with the Maori All Blacks at Thomond Park with Tommy O'Donnell to captain Munster for the first time. Three players are in line to make their Munster debuts. Short-term signing Te Aihe Toma is included on the bench as are the academy's Sean O'Connor and John Foley. O'Connor was part of the Ireland side that defeated New Zealand at this year's World Rugby U20 Championship.

Conor Oliver, Brian Scott and Dan Goggin are also included in the matchday squad completing a strong academy representation of five players.

Three changes are seen in the pack. James Cronin comes back into the front row with John Madigan making his first start of the season in the second row. Oliver returns with captain O'Donnell and Robin Copeland making positional switches to form a new look back row. O'Donnell starts at blindside for the first time since February 2014.

The last change comes at half back where Ian Keatley comes in to partner Duncan Williams.

It's as you were across the midfield and back three.

23 clubs and schools from across the province will be represented on the pitch tomorrow night having won the #MunsterRising Socks competition, in association with Life Style Sports. Along with seeing their colours on the big stage, winning entrants have the opportunity to lay their club or school socks out for their assigned player in the Munster dressing room before kick-off. (See confirmed clubs and schools below)

Munster XV: Andrew Conway; Darren Sweetnam, Jaco Taute, Rory Scannell, Ronan O'Mahony; Ian Keatley, Duncan Williams; James Cronin, Niall Scannell, Stephen Archer; John Madigan, Darren O'Shea; Tommy O'Donnell - capt., Conor Oliver, Robin Copeland.

Replacements: Rhys Marshall, Peter McCabe, Brian Scott, Sean O'Connor, John Foley, Te Aihe Toma, Dan Goggin, Alex Wootton.

Munster v Maori All Blacks, Friday November 11th at Thomond Park, ko 7.30pm.

Please note this game is sold out.

This game will be televised on Eir Sport.

No JOD. Hopefully its an indication that he's involved in the Irish squad. Would be pretty disappointing if he was to miss out so he can be the 24th man against Canada.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,079 ✭✭✭leakyboots

Think Keats could be pivotal to this one, if he can get the backline firing... who is going to step up in the pack and break the gainline like Killer/CJ? Niall Scannell has upped his game recently in this regard, Cronin will be straining at the leash. Shame JOD isn't around, he makes the hard yards (really hope he isn't the 24th man for Ireland, that'll be annoying). Tommy and Robin are at their best in space, I'd be hitting them straight after the fatties have burst a hole

If Bleyendaal is being 'managed' then I'm a bit concerned. There's no game until Treviso at home in two weeks' time and Munster don't need him for that. That said, December is going to be a brutal month for Munster.

    - Glasgow (A)
    - Leicester (H)
    - Leicester (A)
    - Leinster (H)
    - Connacht (A)

Our locks and out-half are a concern but every other position - bar the bench - seems okay.
Hope Oliver makes a big impression.

Not to those specific clubs but some of the players will have played with some of the clubs/schools
James Cronin began playing in Ballincollig but played a few seasons at under 18 and 20 level with Highfield. Copeland is currently affiliated to Munsters.
    John Foley came through Shannon.
Niall Scannell went to Pres, Ronan O Mahony was in Castletroy, Sweetnam was in Bandon Grammar and Goggin went to Munchins

Now that the team has been named and looking back I think we had a better team in 2008, some of the 2008 had won H/Cups, hard to match that experience.

shows how munsters depth has fallen. When you consider there would have been a lot more involved with ireland missing back then as well

G'way out of that - we've 10 players involved with Ireland. You've the squad named for the Maoris and fellas like Dave Foley, Kleyn, Duncan Casey, Saili, Dave O'Callaghan (all likely starters) out injured and then Sherry, Bohane, Arnold who'd be in with a shout or bench spot.

These games can be when fellas announce themselves.. Donnacha Ryan used the ABs game to get into the Ireland squad v Argentina a week or two later. Conor Murray v Australia. Nagle's performance in the same game is still the main reference point when people talk about him.

Looking forward to seeing John Madigan, Conor Oliver and Wooton in action, as well as our new signings.

EDIT: just to add, a third of that 2008 team was NIQ

I don't think any Munster fans would begrudge him his gametime in The Pale, good to see him realising some of his potential and still plenty of time for him to grow further. Look at Billy Holland!
