I notice the storm surge charge on the hurricane center's site below has been downgraded since last night. There was so much more red areas last night.

The problem with this storm is that it will slow down and spit out a huge volume of rain on a state that's already swampland over the coming days. That worries me more than the wind itself.

Looks like it is still skirting close along the Florida coast min pressure 945mb, max sustained wind 195km/h (120mph) (Category 3) and moving at 22km/h North-Northwest (330 degree). Update
Increased rainfall total potential, forecast for Atlantic central Florida all the way up the coast to Eastern North Carolina of 8 to 12 inches with isolated 15 inches.
Death Toll of 339 so far in Haiti.
One of the risks is that there isn't a strong history of Hurricanes impacting the northern Atlantic coast of Florida.
It's still unsure whether the Hurrricane will stay just off the coast or move inland somewhat as it goes.

The death toll in Haiti caused by Hurricane Matthew has risen to 478, Reuters quotes officials as saying, although this has yet to be confirmed.

    Yikes.

You can watch Matthew live on this webcam at Port Canaveral, some damage visible when the camera turns around

Seems to be down now but it was coming and going

Yep some of the videos of areas that seemed okay earlier but are getting hit by a storm surge are scary.

Storm surge and inland rainfall in Georgia and South Carolina are now the main concerns as Matthew moves up along the coast, lucky to have stayed further off the coast so far but set to move in closer and some models predict it could briefly come ashore further up the coast.

    Tragic event in Haiti .

North Carolina could see some of the highest rainfall

In terms of impacts over the next couple of days, Haiti is definitely the one to be concerned about. Its a 3rd world country that has suffered more than its fair share of natural disasters.

140 miles south of the western tip of Haiti. This means 20-40 hours of rain until it passes out of the way of Haiti, with the most wind & rain on the eastern quadrant. This is not going to go well for this island nation.

Bahamas and Cuba are better equipped to cope.

    About 1,000+ lives lost.

Devastating for the South West of Haiti with so many lives lost and so many houses destroyed and damaged. The damage to infrastructure wll also mean rescue and recovery efforts continue to be difficult. The health risks (including the existing cholera outbreak) make it urgent to get supplies and medical aid into effected areas.

Anyone know what would be the best way to donate money for aid to Haiti?

Dr. Jeff Masters (of Wunderground) is recommending the Lambi Fund.

To be fair, Dundrum Shopping Centre is known for its indigenous shark population...

Currently there is heavy flooding in North Carolina with people needing to be rescued from rising waters. Matthew turned post-tropical with the result that strong winds and heavy rain continued on the East North Carolina coast even as it moved further offshore.

The fact that the worst winds for the most part stayed offshore the US South East coast was a positive factor in limiting what could have been even worse damage caused by Matthew, though the impact of major flooding is still being felt. There's a useful look at the accuracy of the forecast for this Hurricane and Hurricane Katrina on Wundergruond here among other things. It was a devastating direct hit on part of Haiti where infrastructure and the economy generally were already weak, it obviously needs initial aid but also a long term strategic plan to ensure the nation is capable of better protecting it's people and responding more effectively to natural disasters i.e. it's economy needs to develop quickly.

The extra heat in the waters Matthew passed over are a cause for concern if current trends continue and there ends up being greater heat, contributing to more destructive storms.

Concern had a representative on RTÉ speaking from Haiti a number of times. You could ask Irish Aid who else has existing operations there and what they do.
