The Blues, Chiefs, Crusaders and Maori will all do hakas I think. If the players get sick of them then tough ****. It's part of NZ rugby culture. Like being silent for the kicker is part of Irish rugby.

    Always worth a dig out

To clarify, I know it's important that they are called....I just didn't know who called them was a big deal.

It's quite important defensively. Biggest skill offensively would having the ability to cancel or change reciever based on reading the opposition.

Will every team the lions play do a haka or is just the rep teams and the All Blacks ???

Was that All Blacks doc on Sky yet ?

Every team will probably so a version. I'll be interested to see if jager does the babas one, if they do one.
Technically the players don't have to watch they can warm up are whatever during it but that would just annoy the new Zealanders.

I think if a group of grown adult men want to do a highly choreographed dance routine before a game then we should by all accounts let them express themselves.

    You go guys. #step_up

I see a nz poll says the 78% of new Zealanders can't name a single lions player. Got me thinking that there really isn't a superstar player this tour like O'Driscoll, Wilkinson, O'Connell, would have been in previous tours, maybe Itoje? Whether that's a bad thing I'm not so sure

Don't remotely believe it. It's just people being deliberately obtuse to make some kind of stupid point. If their life depended on it they'd easily be able to name some.

I'd absolutely believe it or that it's close to it. Remember when Retallick was asked to name an English player a few years ago and couldn't?

Keep in mind that northern hemisphere rugby gets very little coverage down there and this was a poll of the public.

If you stopped 1,000 people on O'Connell Street and asked them to name a member of the current NZ squad I would imagine you might get even lower.

I suppose that would be a better stat - what percentage of people who actually care in the slightest about rugby can name a player. I hadn't really considered the percentage of those who don't follow rugby at all in my thinking so maybe you are correct. I still get the impression there is an element of "nah bro, don't know any of those guys playing easy rugby" when it is in fact not true.

So what you're saying is that the Haka carries the same cultural significance and overall credibility as Ireland's Call?

    Yes, I would agree.

Not much discussion about it but I'd be slightly concerned with Payne's injury. Supposedly the severity is undetermined at this point. His injury record of late has been abysmal and a calf strain can be very tricky to shake off. It was a calf strain that ended Gethin Jenkins tour in 2013.

I can see him missing the first few games with this which would really damage his chances of being involved in the opening test.

After the Haka, the Irish could do a jig, the English dance around a maypole, the Scots (if any are on the field) a highland fling and the Welsh could sing a song. Only fair.

I know there are many good reasons why he didn't but..I wish Wade had made the cut, either for some of the early games or as a fun sub in a lost series. That lad can run.

Can't even make the severely depleted England squad

He's still more fun to watch than any of them.

Hence when I wanted him to play. 2-0 down and twenty minutes to go, I don't want to see yet more strenuous trundling.

A couple of years ago a group of Maori visitors came to stay in the village where I play and they were billeted with our players for the week. We played a match against them and, before they annihilated us on the pitch, they performed a haka. It was a fantastic experience and an unforgettable week. The return trip to the BoP is planned for 2019 but I doubt I'll make it.

Anyway, in September last year a new guy from Wellington joined our team and he was telling us that on his first day house hunting in the area the estate agent brought him to see a house in this little middle of nowhere village in France and as they were looking around it all of a sudden he hears this haka being belted out from up the road. Said it was pretty surreal.

I was in NZ in 07 and I'm still not sure when the people I met said they didn't think Ronan Keating was any good whether they were talking about the singer or making a joke about ROG. They weren't laughing if it was a joke

Did you listen to the retallick interview? It was a fool around job on a comedy style show but the English media were more than happy to whip that quote out of context. As your post shows the media achieved their goal in spades. At the time I thought Retallick was a bit of a dick, but then when I stumbled across the clip from the radio comedy show, I realised it had been taken out of context. From memory, he was supposed to have got the name of his opponent wrong, rather than not being able to name anyone.

That aside, there are not really any big name players well known in the SH in this lions squad, such as Johnny wilkinson who was a household name, even in nz. Itoje is the kind of player who could become very well known.

NZ rugby players tend to better known in the north, but what percentage of Irish people could name a current Australian rugby player for example? Even for the nz team Irish people might struggle to name an AB, given the easy recalls of mccaw or Carter would now be incorrect.

I think people overestimate rugbys importance in nz. It is way less a religion than even say in 2005. I could probably believe 78%. People just don't set their alarms in nz for 2 am to watch 6N rugby for example...which I actually think is reasonable...

Good morning Venjur. You should pass the time by watching the Chiefs - your new outside back signing is having a great first half. Work-rate that would give Joe a hard on.

He came back, but has re-signed with Sarries (?). He's back north at the end of Super season in any case. He has all the physical attributes, but tends to be lazy and hot-headed which has stopped him going too far with Australia.
