So SETI and Russian instruments are picking up very strong signals from star HD164595.

They are trying to figure out whether the signal is artificial or natural like a pulsar or some other phenomenon.

Could be it aliens? Probably not.

    Interesting all the same though.

What does anyone here think, or would ye have zero interest in something like this?

Personally I think if the signal was proven to be artificial, it would be one of the biggest events in modern human history.

Here is the story about it:

But somewhere out there, something is watching us. There are alien forces acting in ways we can't perceive. Are we alone in the universe? Impossible. When you consider the wonders that exist all around us.... Voodoo priests of Haiti, Tibetan Numerologists of Appalachia. The unsolved mysteries of...unsolved mysteries. The truth...is out there!

I think we should offer friendship to the Aliens.
Ask them to lower their shields to allow an ambassadorial ship
    through to discuss peace terms.
When they drop their shields .... Hit them with everything we've got.

Where the hell is Jodie Foster? She should be decoding this message, and flirting with Matthew McConaughey, and building that machine where she jumped into a vortex or something......seeing her father...I dunno, I kind of lost track of what happened in that film when it went all weird and trippy.

at 94 light years away it would take about 35 days for that radio signal to reach here. Given how people moan and biawtch when the internet goes down for 1 minute I don't think we'd have the stamina to hold a conversation. (Not to mention finding a translation!).

So ya, even if there were aliens, most of the population would be like 'meh, ain't no one got no time for that' and we'd get back to talking about Donald Trump and getting rid of school uniforms again.

Clever f*ckers the Chinese, getting lanterns 94 light years away. Bet they claimed all the planets along the way.

Now I'm no Brian Cox... but I'm not sure you're completely 100% accurate with your maths there. Maybe tweak it a tad by adding...what...a touch under 94 years to that 35 days?

hi folks, i love the way they knew for months at SETI yet decided not to tell us in case of panic lol...no one cares except us 10 people on boards.

seriously though we need to ignore this signal and develop our technology for a 1,000 years then answer...

It has to be heaven, it's probably getting pretty full there right now and they're trying to signal us to tell us we need to find sonewhere else to go. If God knew they were trying to signal us he'd lose the bap and probably perform a few miracles of the punishment type.

True, had this news arrived in the mid 90's during X-Files mania it would have been a bigger deal, these days people are only interested in receiving nude selfies and being knobs, way hey for progress.

    Sounds interesting.
Given the size of the universe there must be life somewhere. Even if we were to find some old signal from some ancient civilisation.

Sounds like, from reading the story, that they haven't got a lot to go on. A quote from a guy who no doubt is extremely keen on making sure people pay attention to his research and then a few paragraphs of how it's all very, very unlikely really (interesting how they say that more than likely this is a no-go, according to the experts - which makes the first guy what, exactly?) And then to wrap it all up a bit of summation of the concept of the energy harnessing powers of advanced civilizations.

Diverting and higher than usual quality click-bait.

Cant remember where I read this before, but there was a nice short story about humans broadcasting into space trying to make contact with alien races. Finally we receive a signal back, eventually translated, it simply said "be quiet, or they will hear you....."

The sad part about all this is if it is aliens, they've reached out into true vastness of the universe in the hope of finding intelligent life but instead found us.
