Can one of your friends go with you and buy her ticket off her?

Saw a thing before where a guy advertised for someone with the same name as his ex to come on the holiday with him. I think it was an all inclusive thing, non refundable including hotel, meals etc.
Someone took him up on the offer and they had a great time (platonic).

You could head off alone and offer to give the exs flight to someone with the same name. Turn something bad into something good.
See if a friend would like to book flights too and head along with you if you don't fancy going alone.

That seems extremely bizzare! There's usually just a fee for airlines to change the name. Did you try talking to a manager?

If you want the exact same flight that you are booked onto the price today is €1265.00 including taxes, flight is very heavily booked now, hence the hefty price.

Unfortunately there's nothing that can be done on XXX ticket, it's totally non refundable

That only says it's non refundable though, it doesn't say they can't change the name.

    Which airline is it?

You'll definitely be able to change the name, at the usual fee.

The original email was asking to change the name
I need to change the name on my tickets from XXX to XXXX
    Invoice number XXXX
    Recepti Code XXX

The reply was the what I posted earlier

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,360 ✭✭✭BetsyEllen

I wouldn't be happy with that reply since they haven't actually answered your question.

Saying the flight is heavily booked is nothing to do with changing a name.

My advice would be to call them.

Honestly that sounds like a lazy travel agent more than anything else. Changing names on airline tickets should be possible but there's probably work involved which is why our brave Travel Agent couldn't be arsed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,375 ✭✭✭Sin City

This is the reply I got

Very sorry but it's not possible to do a name change on these type of tickets, you'd have to buy a whole new ticket I'm afraid.

    Kind Regards

I went to Thailand on my own before, had a great time. Sign up to loads of tours, you'll make loads of friends that way.

Forget the travel agent. Contact the airline directly to see if you can change the name.

Have you tried to contact the airline directly?

Your travel agent is fobbing you off.

What is the name of the airline?
I will do a bit of googling for you and see if I can find anything on changing a name on a ticket with them directly.

Try direct with airline, friend last weekend wanted to change day of flight because they where sick third party they booked through said it would cost 700 to change days, rang BA direct and they said email them a doctors cert and they'll change both flights for free.. if your lucky BA might be the main carrier for both your flights with Malaysian just acting as a carrier and BA will be able to change the name on both flights.. same with my friend had two flights with two different airlines but they where both BA flights the other airline was just in some.sort of partnership with them for that route..

OP sorry about the relationship breakdown but you don't have to go on the holiday alone.

The travel agent is talking through their bottom. The name can be changed with almost every single airline but for a fee. Contact the airline directly and get it sorted. Don't forget to inform the travel agent and everyone you know after you sorted it as the travel agents don't deserve the business for the poor customer service they have offered you.

Thailand is the perfect place to go...enjoy yourself it will be immense. Don't fall in love, easy to do out there. But the airline will definitely be able to change the name as it is more than 30 days away. Just occurred to me that you don't see, too worried about the break up. If so good man......have a great trip, drink cocktails, go swimming and forget about real life for a while.

I think you need to consider the wording in their response. They say 'the exact same flight that you are booked onto' which sounds oversubscribed hence the ridiculous fee. If you're prepared to be flexible and have a friend fly out a day or two before or after you then I'm sure it can be done.

Inform the travel agent you will be having a word with Joe Duffy

Had a similar issue, also a flight to Bangkok, change of date was needed due to illness, travel agent informed me the date could not be changed and a new flight would be needed, after an evening spent upset I resigned myself to buying a new flight, rang the travel agent, spoke to a different guy who rang the airlines for me and got the dates changed for an administrator fee of 150, way better option. I can't see how the same couldn't happen do for a name change, as others have said ring and ask to speak to the manager or ring the airline direct. Best of luck!

Just found this on the British Airways website; name cannot be changed.
Very poor form I think, I'm very surprised to find this out:

If you want to completely change one of the people booked to travel:
If you have made a booking for the wrong person and you find this out within one day of making the booking, we have a 24 hour cooling off period in which you can call British Airways customer services and cancel the booking and receive a full refund.
However, the following types of booking are not covered by this guarantee:
    • Bookings made on a flight leaving within 24 hours of the time you book.
    • Bookings where immediate payment isn't required.
    • Package bookings or flights booked with hotels, car hire, transfers or experiences (they have their own separate conditions - please ring Customer Support)
    • South African domestic only services, operated by Comair
Outside this cooling off period, flight-only tickets are non-transferable and you will need to cancel the original booking and make a new booking for the new traveller (at current ticket prices). Please call us if you'd like more advice and assistance.

Does that mean they would issue you a refund and you buy a new ticket so your essentially are liable for the difference in price?

If you use Twitter, follow and tweet BA as to how much a name change will cost on a flight to Thailand
They will follow you and resolve via dm

You got an inexperienced call centre travel agent I'm afraid
