OK got my raspberry today, took hours and sesting it up, keyboard is fine, was hoping it was be a bit easier then it is thought, I installed a wireless ps3 controller but it won't work on anyone of the game.

Can't understand the convoluted guides out there, I just want to know how can I set the controller to 1, work, 2 add coin/live on mame ect.

Does the controller work with the menu at all?

I just set up an 8bitdo controller on mine a few days ago. Gave me a bit of a headache to start with, but I figured it out.

    Are you using RetroPie?

Yep got got 3.81, got the ps3 driver using the video guides, so it can use the menus ect, just it only reads my keyboard when I load a game, so my ps3 controller doesn't read in games, work in all menus perfectly.

Only info I has involved retroarch + coding, couldnt tell head or teal about the coding parts, hard were is easy, software is a pain lol.

I looked for the latest version which the UK site said 3.81 "saw there was 4.00 beta" but I left it alone.

Can it play mame? Looked it up a sec ago, but didn't see it.

Ok. I've helped a few mates set up retropie (never with a ps3 controller) but I might be able to help. Sorry if you are more advanced than my suggestions I just like to make sure it's not something silly.

First have you tried a simpler emulator like nes, snes or megadrive. It should definitely work out of the box with them. If not it's a retroarch issue we can fix.

If it works with them you have to understand there are multiple versions of mame on the retropie. If you aren't putting the roms in mame-libretro folder they aren't using retroarch and you have to configure the controller manually by pressing tab on the keypoard and going into input settings.

Retropie only sets up the controller to work with Retroarch based emulators. You have to do any others manually.

    Yes it does,

When I set mine up, it worked in the menu but not with any of the emulators.

I fixed that by going in to the retroarch menu in the RetroPie section and binding the keys manually. Just save the settings in the controller input menu, go back to the main retroarch menu and overwrite the current config (don't save a new one) and it works in the standard ones like NES, SENS, PS1, Megadrive, etc.

MAME though, you'll have to bind the keys in the emulator as you would on PC. You can either change the inputs for the whole emulator or just a specific game.

OK, update tried recalbox, was sweet but no pi3 internal Bluetooth support.

So I'm back on pie, good news I just got my fc30 pro, and it working on the menus, I'll be testing it on games soon.

Had it working for a while then it killed it's self, had my ps3 and fc30 working, had to reboot now it's failing to read USB and my controllers don't work...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 560 ✭✭✭Flaregon

    Update:

After 3 formats and a few tweaks, its working again, the fc30 pro didn't connect at start up, but my wireless keyboard can fix that fow now lol.

Remind me never to try a ps3 controller again, lol.

Has anyone used a 360 controller with the fc30?
Hoping that won't blow it up again with the 360 drivers as the ps3 ones are said to be awful.

Would be nice have more then the fc30 when friends are over lol.

Back up your image when it is working using Win32 diskimager !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,824 ✭✭✭ShooterSF

If you want to get your fc30 pro controller working from startup you'l need your mac address. It'll be listed when you pair with the controller in the format XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX Take that down, F4 out of emulation station and follow this guide. I've time stamped to the bit you need to follow. (If you haven't used "nano" much Ctrl + X exits then hit Y and enter to save the file.
Edit: timestamp doesn't want to work. Skip to 12:33

Working now, just have to restart the controller on boot up, and it resyncs now.

It's up and running, after 7 reinstall I've learned a lot.

I think the back up is a fantastic idea.

Yes because if you pull the power on the pi sometimes it corrupts the SD card and you have to format it and reinstall everything.
    Always shut down correctly.

Is there any lag when using wireless controllers? Say something like Sonic the Hedgehog, does Sonic jump the instant you press a button, or is there a small delay?

Also, can the Pi emulate Mega CD games?

Haven't tried mega yet, but pi has the options.
Controller fc30 seem to work great with little to no lag, I think my finger or the fact I havent updated it's firmware are both factors thought.

I see you can use wired pads, so if there's latency issues they#re an option I suppose. A couple more questions:

    1) Can I use different pads for different systems? Ie, a usb Snes pad for Snes games, a usb Megadrive pad for Megadrive games, etc etc.

    2) Can I store roms on external storage, ie one or two attached usb drives?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,909 ✭✭✭Steve X2

Don't forget you can also boot from external storage and ethernet on the Pi3 now. It might suit someone's setup better than SD.

    USB:
    https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/pi-3-booting-part-i-usb-mass-storage-boot/

There are a couple of known issues:

Some flash drives power up too slowly. There are many spinning disk drives that don’t respond within the allotted two seconds. It’s possible to extend this timeout to five seconds, but there are devices that fail to respond within this period as well, such as the Verbatim PinStripe 64GB.

Some flash drives have a very specific protocol requirement that we don’t handle; as a result of this, we can’t talk to these drives correctly. An example of such a drive would be the Kingston Data Traveller 100 G3 32G.

    Network:
    https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/pi-3-booting-part-ii-ethernet-all-the-awesome/

The main advantages when it comes to the Raspberry Pi are:

SD cards are difficult to make reliable unless they are treated well; they must be powered down correctly, for example. A Network File System (NFS) is much better in this respect, and is easy to fix remotely.

NFS file systems can be shared between multiple Raspberry Pis, meaning that you only have to update and upgrade a single Pi, and are then able to share users in a single file system.

Network booting allows for completely headless Pis with no external access required. The only desirable addition would be an externally controlled power supply.

from my experience, it depend on the sides yopu working with, I got a 16 gb card, and the games have to move from the SD to the micro sd "bugged so many times", I found setting up the sftp or what ever its call was easist, you just copy from your pc to the correct directory and your good to go, the other boot options stated above I havent tryed.

If you want the best results "from what I've tryed so far", I would go with a 128gb card + sftp "pc to pi", cause its easy and just works.

    also

depending what your plans are, and the controller you already have I think it would be viable to switch, aslong as the pi reads the controller, but switch would be a pain.

I find ps3 are good "once you know have to install them", I raelly like my FC30 pro "small as hell, feels like a snes controller with 2 extra trigger and some sticks" feels sweet.

P.S to anyone that reads this what firmwere do I want to upgrade 2 on my FC30 ?

    I just got a RP3 today.
Looking forward to popping it into the cab and seeing how the performance is affected, particularly on some of the PSP titles, they look great as is but suffer slow down.
Any other emus become usable with the RP3??

I think N64 is usable now..

Can rom directories be changed though? Ie, can the emu live on an sd card...while the roms live on a usb stick?

Yah look up ps1 from USB, and it should give you a video guide.

    Edit:.https://youtu.be/2WGpGCn9NeI guide

P.s : turbo graphic CD is working.

I've never been impressed with N64 emulation and, besides, the cab is digital sticks only, so you lose function there.
What about Saturn emulation, or does that still broadly suck.

Its in experimental packages, so I would say its bad, but the Dreamcast emu look functional, need to test.

Anyway as some someone new to Dreamcast and PC engine, what are the must plays, I'm a ps1 collector so never tried the turbo or dreamcast.
Only ones I hear of are castlevaina RoB on the PC engion and shenmu on the DC

PC Engine emulation is just fine on an RP2, and I find little trouble with PS emulation.
Mame obviously bumps into issues with some titles.
It's a testament to the work going into the PS emu when Raiden runs just fine, along with Raiden 2 and Raiden DX, while they fail to play on Mame, but then it's an old Mame that's used anyhow.
PSP emulation is sometimes fine, like with Darius Burst, othertimes choppy, like with Loco Roco, I'm hoping things will be smoother now.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 33,733 ✭✭✭✭Myrddin

Mame is about accuracy though, computational accuracy. Compared to another emulator who can implement little hacks, tricks, & code to get something running right, Mame is limited. It's not normally an issue though, you see it on modern era stuff only.

Think I've decided to build a little emulation 'jukebox', using a Pi3. I Have it all set up on the bartop, and that's fine for arcade stuff, for console though it's just better with a controller on the tv (that said, console stuff an a proper arcade monitor is a different thing altogether, it's glorious!)

    A bartop!!
Sure, with the over inflated prices of those on Adverts you can sell it for...

    Exactly :D

I'm actually considering moving it on, & replacing it another one based on a Pi3 just for Arcade stuff.

My FC30 pro broke 3 days in new record, who ever said the build quality was good was on crack....

The big right r1 trigger died, should be able to work round one less button but, 3 days and a trigger goes...

Opened it to see what was up, there was a light sticker on it with part of an old stick still there under it, so I'm thinking they sent me a donkey, the button on the board was bent back and was falling off, no solder so, since I know for a fact that the sell sold me an opened one that was a crap refurbish I just super glued it. And that fail, as the button fell off....not happy was a bday gift...stupid Amazon....

If its bad build quality and its broken with no solder its their fault.
Worth a try, i wouldnt have opened it if it was new.
