I don't know what this log is.

    I find keeping a log of things, anything, is a great way to make me motivated. It's helped me save money over the past year for example. And I've been consistently running or jogging for about 9 months now.


    I'm 23 years old. I was really, really fat as a teenager, clinically obese, but I've lost a fair bit of weight since the age of 16. So I'm not skinny, I'd still be overweight I think but not to the extent I was back in the day.


    I started with the C25K program in February 15, and I was going every single day at first. Then my knee started to hurt like anything, so I stopped for about a month. Then I started going every 3 days, one day, and the same thing happened with the knee again so I stopped again Then I did every 2 days with one day break, and it wasn't the knee that time I was just struggling. So now I've been able to settle into one day on, one day off.

    And I kept resetting C25K every time I quit running or was struggling, rather going too fast and wrecking my knee again, so I'm only up to the start of week 6 right now.

    So, my personal best was actually today, I was able to do this

    In total, I did 2.88 miles in 26.05 minutes. Not really sure what my long term goal is, other than lose weight, get fitter, etc. I'm trying to not do distance right now, but improve my speed or pace whatever, cos I assume the distance will come naturally with that.

    Well done getting this far! Looks like the Malahide parkrun is in your vicinity, you should definitely give it a go.

    My advice would be to set a goal of some description, it will make it much easier to motivate yourself, structure your training, and stick with it long term. Well done on getting stuck in, looking forward to seeing how you progress. Be warned: it gets addictive.

    That's totally down to you really, it depends on what you hope to achieve with your running. For many people it would be things like signing up for a target race and being in good shape to complete that distance when it comes around, or achieve a particular time. That can work for any type of race from 100 meters on the track to a 100km ultra.

    Or it could just be to run x number of miles per week or this year. Or to be able to run 20km without stopping. Or something else. But it's important to have something to set your sights on and work towards, to my mind anyway!

    I have 600 miles down to run on the runtastic app. But considering we're in August, and I'm only on 211 miles odd, I don't think I'll make that.

    As Max suggests the goals are your own and maybe something to think about are the many different dimensions to running. For example the parkrun in Malahide on Saturday mornings (as suggested by Singer) is a very sociable and enjoyable event. There are lots of people who participate in parkrun to race hard, to meet up with new friends, to have a laugh and yes so they can go for coffee afterwards. It is a target of sorts for all those reasons each week and probably helps motivate people to get out and train a little to improve their experience.

    Keep it going Miles. You have made a good start and have figured out a pattern that works for you. Be kind to yourself though and have that knee checked out with a physio.

    I wouldn't be worrying about pace at all right now either - just focus on easy, enjoyable jogging (slow enough that you could hold a conversation with a partner, for example) at least until you are up to the 5k distance, which I assume is the goal, as you are still on the couch to 5k schedule, right?

    +1 on the parkrun suggestion too. Best of luck with it.

    Well I tend to be keeping back from going further? Cos I'm finding longer running times, like the 20 minutes without stopping is killing me. Like I was doing 4-5 miles before, but on short run times, like 2 minutes run then 3 minutes walk, but my times were rubbish on it.

    you posted a record of an 8:21 mile, which seems far too fast for someone at your stage. Relax and run slowly and you'll get to your 20 mins, 30 mins before long. Once you have a bit of endurance you can start to think about your times.

    Don't be too concerned with time. The runs are killing you because you are running too fast ., We all did that when staring out, it's not the way to go.

    Slow down build distance which builds endurance and the times will drop .

    Read around the logs here you will see that none of us run flat out on all our runs . After you have completed your couch 25k your weekly schedule should include mostly easy runs and one or two paced runs at most ., there are plenty of running plans around if you like running to a plan.

    Id highly recommend parkruns too they are brilliant.

    Congratulations on your progress and on starting a log ., it's great for keeping track of things. Mind that knee and the best of luck with your running .

    Can be slower than walking and still be running so long as both feet leave the ground. :pac:

    Just borrowed this table from the DCM Novices Mentor Thread in the Training Logs. It gives an idea of the paces that people will be aiming for on their forthcoming long runs. You are currently training at a faster pace than everybody who will run in the marathon. They are of course targeting a much longer race than yourself Miles but that is relative when you are starting off.

    Keep the brakes on :D. Your distance will increase as you do so. Enjoy.

    Thats what I thought too when I was given the very same advice here but it's the best way of improving while staying injury free.

    I'm a couch 25k runner myself . Did it 3 years ago . I did the very same as you are doing . I thought I had to run as fast as I could every run., you dont

    Are you using an app.?

    The nhs website in the UK have brilliant c25k podcasts that will guide you to run at the correct pace .

    I only asked because the podcasts have voice prompts and tips as you run , I though they may help you with running slower.

    I haven't been able to run since Thursday, which is very annoying, cos my knee has been hurting me since Thursday, and I know from experience trying to run it off doesn't work, so I've been running instead of walking.

    Time today wasn't great, but I was walking for a bit of it, and I've just taken 5 days rest, so I don't think its that bad?

    And I neglected this log again, but I haven't stopped running! Improved my times quite a bit

    I am currently however, stalled at around 6 miles. On C210K, thats two half an hour running bits, with a minutes walk, and I keep putting myself off doing the hour straight one. I only did 5 miles today cos I took nearly a whole week off, very bad that is. Any tips?
