    Imported a car yesterday.

Saw the car 2 weeks ago, agreed price and paid a deposit.

I bought from a main dealer as i would have no idea of who in the UK was the Arthur Daly type, and to save on a vehicle inspection. I still checked online the previous MOT's.

Used Transfermate to send over the money.

Changed over the insurance the day before. There was no hassle.

Someone from the dealership picked me up at 8.30 from Liverpool Airport, went to the dealership. Signed a few things and i was on the road before 10. I had to tax the car for a minimum of six months. I decided to take the full V5C with me, and not complete Part 4 for exporting the vehicle. I'll do this after i register the vehicle over hear for my tax refund.

Drove to Holyhead and was on the Ferry by 2. Was in the house by 6.30.

    Relatively painless so far!!

Have to ring to get the car VRT'ed today.

    Very happy with the car.

Thanks to the OP with the great write up, which made the process smother.

That was a very quick turnaround. The money went through straight away almost?

Yes, did the transfer in the morning and was in the dealers account that evening. The next morning i got an email from the dealer to confirm this. I paid about a week in advance of picking up the car.

I was not using any transfer money companies, just pure money transfer from my bank account to dealers bank account ( was using urgent money transfer- sent it thursday afternoon, dealer confirmed money received by monday morning).

Car had no tax, just now checked by dvla, it was expired 23 september (got car in 20 October). Dealer picked me up at stansted airport,
Signed some dockets, took keys and left " five oaks " at around 11.00.

Due bad data coverage (bought some useless simcard in airport) , went lost couple times, but eventually was in Holyhead port at around 7 pm. Had more than hour over for stenaline ferry.

Before midnight i was in Dublin.

Insurance company transferred insurance from my oul passat hassle free, also i asked to make additional coverage for a month on aul passat, to sell, or export (dont know which option will be best), i rang 21 october to vrt office, couldnt set date for vrt inspection, so they put me on "priority" list. :D
Monday received email and text message that i was slotted in in 8th november morning.

Hopefully everything will go smooth as it was before.
    Car fantastic so far.

Just got through VRT test. Same amount as calculated by the online VRT calculator - so no surprises there. Guys at NCT say they are up the walls with VRT evaluations.

Rang up to book my VRT and there are no spaces in my local centre so have been but on a priority list. What happens if I don't get appointment within 30 days?

Would it be any better trying to do it online? I am going to book my own car through the online system over the weekend.

Failing getting an appointment, I will ring & ask to be placed on priority list.

Much easier to do it online and check at other available centres. Once you have booked a test, you can check each day around 10am(I think) for cancellations. If you're past 30 days, you oay an additional percentage of the tax due.

I definitely would think twice about driving through NI. That reg has already been deleted.

Thanks. I have made decision go through sligo, it is one hour extra , but thats on nice motorways, versus narrow ni roads and traffic and much less hassle with law enforsment.

You need an entire document. Why any dealers have problems giving you a full document, they don't need it to de-register/export: https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle

Tried online for 3 different centres none of them had appointments bar 1 today which I couldn't get to. Surly they can't charge you extra if it's their fault you can't get in??

I VRT'd mine right on the 30 day mark. Had to go to a place an hour away as the centres closer to me had no availability until after the 30 days were up.
I asked while there what the fine would have been and was told 0.1% of the total per day.
But once you go over you get charged for a 30 day period.
So if I am 1 day late I get charged as if I was 30 days late.
€150 for VRT of €5000 for example.

Is the registration to the county your centre is in or your home address?

  • Registered Users Posts: 51,144 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

It's the county of the address on the utility bill you provide them.

Does it have to be utility bill or just proof of address ie bank statement/ revenue

  • Registered Users Posts: 757 ✭✭✭Denisoftus

Bank or a credit card statement, no to revenue.

    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/vrt-guide.html#section2e
Documentation verifying the new registered owner’s name and address (Utility Bill, Bank Statement). The information leaflet "Owner Name and Address Declarations" provides additional information regarding owner's name and address details. Please note that a Television Licence is not acceptable as a Utility Bill.

    from VRT confirmation email:
Documentation verifying the new registered owner's name and address. I notice in the first post that he got insurance in Ireland prior to the change of plate. I didn't think it was possible to do that?

Yes your current insurer should allow you to switch your cover from your current car over to it. They will only do it temporarily though, think it's 30 days on the foreign plates.

Is it a very high premium for that month in comparison to if you were insuring the same car here?

The only one who can answer that is your insurance company.

Generally if the newer car is more powerful or more expensive than the old car then naturally your premium will rise. This goes for any new car you buy irrespective of what country you buy it in.

Yes but I would guess there is an added premium to insure English plates. I'm surprised Irish insurance companies would agree to do it. I would have thought u might have to get some sort of specialist insurance, hence why I ask about the cost because I'm presuming they would try and ride you

  • Registered Users Posts: 51,144 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

They will do a temporary transfer to a UK registered car you bought over there for until you drive it back, VRT and change it to Irish plates within 30 days. They will not insure an Irish resident on a UK registered car permanently.

No, the premium is the same irrelevant of the origin of reg plates, you are insuring the car no the plates, they fully aware that you have 30 days to VRT the car.

    Couple of questions...

    1. Would I be able to drive around for a couple of days with a newly purchased car before heading for ferry?

    2. I am thinking of buying a 2015 Hyundai I30 in Motorpoint in Birmingham. Do you see any pitfalls with that choice of car and dealer?

Anyone have any experience with Motorpoint - I did see on another thread that they wouldn't sell to ROI buyers recently, can anyone confirm this?
