I liked it. It wasn't anything as sweet as I thought it would be.

I had it last night. Didn't realize it was supposed to be flavored! Enjoyed it very much.

Tonight's treat is beer number 1 from the Mother Mac's advent calendar. An absolute cracker to kick off the month.

I was looking for this last night in Martins, but it was buried in the stock room. Hoping to pick it up tonight.

I used to enjoy the odd pastry stout, but just found the stuff from White Hag to be absolutely putrid.

I used to love the Porterhouse Chocolate Truffle Stout… Is it no more?

I think it was around last year, but that was the end of it. The head brewer disliked it, and that's never a good sign when a brewery is cutting back its range.

    Has anybody had this?

Yes. It's OK but nowhere near worth what they're charging for it. It's a blend of beers which are nicer to drink separately.

Seconded. Absolutely not worth the premium price.

Another canning failure? Totally flat, even with a dramatic pour. Tasted flat as a pancake, poured it away.

This one was fine though. Or at least, better.

    Both Polish I think.

I really liked Hope's winter seasonal porter last year. This years export Stout is very nice too, though it packs a bit too much of a punch for me at 7.5%. Lovely in front of the fire on a Winter sunday

Anyone else get an email this morning from White Hag saying that "your" Hoppy Christmas Beer Box will be dispatched shortly?

It looks like they sent it to everyone on their mailing list… at least I don't remember ordering one 😯

Gone off ordering beer by mail as if the stuff is discounted it's usually for a reason, and the other half is not a fan of boxes of beer turning up on the doorstep. I have a decent Molloys a few mins walk away and a couple of supermarkets a few mins more, and can pick and choose exactly what I want. There's always something disappointing in these "special" Christmas boxes

    I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm raptured by the joy of it all

Apologies for replying without an answer to your White Hag question, but I had a different query of my own! Anyone know if Wicklow Brewery are doing a 12-12-24 stout this year?

Tonight's treat at home is the Holy Molé stout, a collaboration between Rascals and To Øl. Best chilli stout I've ever had.

Really enjoying my Advent calendar this year. The lads in Mother Mac's are brilliant at what they do. Today's bottle was Spéartha Dorcha, an Oyster stout from Mescan that I thought I'd never be able to get my hands on.

Followed it up with Tara from Lough Gill's range of barrel aged imperial stouts. 14.8% and aged in a Pedro Ximénez barrel from Boann distillery.

The Holy Molé is on Draught at the moment if in during the week.

Hoping to get in for half an hour on Tuesday night. Must sample the new drop from JJ Corry as well. 👍

Got around to trying the Changing Times hazy pale ale. Not awful but clearly something made on a budget. Reminds me of the stuff Lough Gill/Obrother brew for Aldi which is perfectly fine at around 2euro a can but this pint cost over 8euro. Speaking of which I got the receipt and it was €7.80 NOT including 23% vat. I don't think I've ever seen that in a pub, is this something that pubs are doing now or just what some of the more heavily touristed pubs in Dublin do?

Had a few Mo Chara stouts from Aldi again. This is a very 'chocolate-y' stout, and tastes more full-bodied than you'd expect, for 5% abv.

I think I just prefer the O Brother Eachtra, also Aldi, just a little drier and more sessionable.

Good old fashioned Guinness draught cans.

Im a whiskey drinker as the pints we get generally in Ireland are awful on main stream.

I am a Guinness drinker who loves big flavour like cask strength whiskey

Can you lads suggest a few craft beers to wow the taste uds

Of the Irish beers in regular production I recommend Kinnegar's Black Bucket and Brehon's various strong and dark beers, particular Crann Breatha, Oak & Mirrors and Red Right Hand.

Among the current limited editions, Whiplash has three big imperial stouts on the go: Dingus, Dongus and Chongus, all different from each other but worth a look. Lough Gill has a whole range of imperial stouts out at the moment, in small black cans: Spear, Torc, Shield, Warrior, Tara etc. I thought this year's Barrel Aged Leann Folláin from O'Hara's was pretty good too.

There should be something in that lot you'll enjoy.

Not a stout, but O'Hara's Tropical IPA is a big, full-flavoured belter. Lots of stone fruit and a pleasing bitterness to offset that. 7.2% though, so ca' canny.

Tesco's tulip style beer glasses hold a 440 ml can exactly.

Anyone seen White Hag BA Black Boar in shops here? My brother got some from their bar in the airport recently. Haven't seen it in a while myself.

Are Aldi or Lidl not doing the box of mixed beers for Christmas now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 232 ✭✭redshift-rider

Aldi used to do a Brown Bear (Pearse Lyons) xmas box with 12 bottles, but they stopped doing it a few years ago is my recollection.

Lidl used to do a Crafty (Rye River) 12 beer xmas box, I definitely got one last year. But I haven't seen it this year.

I think MUP killed them because what they used to do was discount them in Jan to get rid of unsold stock. They can't discount them due to MUP and nobody wants to pay €24 for a box of Christmas beers in January. So they got rid of them.

Lidl have gone to **** for beer, they used to have nice belgians and stuff this time of year. Now, nothing.

I spotted a Crafty "Christmas Cracker" in Lidl at the weekend but it's just 3 x 330ml cans of their regular stuff, so nothing to get excited about.

Bought 12 bottles of Stiegl Goldbrau on my way home from work last night. Plan was to have them Christmas Eve and Day. Problem is when I looked at the best before date, it was June 24. Should I chance them or not, I won't be passing that shop again before Xmas to return them.

They'll be fine, beer doesn't really go off it just loses flavour over time and eventually gets oxygenated. This isn't even near long enough out of date for either. It will never kill you. Enjoy!

Some beers keep better than others, depending on beer type, abv, container type etc.

If I got them free I would drink them no bother. If I paid full price I wouldn't be super impressed though.

I'd drink at least one anyhow. If it's bad I would take the lot of them back (incl the one you drank) and look for a refund.
