Barrel Threading

    Guys

I'm going to get the barrel on the Remington 700 threaded but I see there seems to be number of different thread sizes out there.
    It's a heavy barrel 700 VLS.

Do you have to pick a thread size when getting it threaded or is it based on the barrel itself. Is there any one more common than
    another.

    Thanks

From a thread with a similar question:

How common the thread is, is usually a big point. This allows you to buy suppressors and sell them easily enough as others will have the same thread. To go for an uncommon one would leave you with a suppressor you cannot sell on should you decide to change.

Also fit. If you have a medium or larger profile barrel you don't want 1/2". It'll look out of place especially when the barrel can accommodate a larger thread. 1/2" unf is 12.7mm. 5/8 is 15.5 or so mm. Have the gunsmith look at the barrel profile and let you know which one you can safely get done that removes the least amount of material while still allowing for a good threading.

If they don't suit you can look to the less common, but still used, metric ones. They simply haven't fully caught on here yet, but seem to be on the rise. Metric threads are the M14, M15, M17, etc. They have a higher pitch for better purchase, and i think (but cannot be sure) they have a few more threads per inch (TPI).

You pick whatever thread you want. The gunsmith will advise you on most common, best to suit the gun, aesthetics, etc. However don't be pushed into something you don't want.

If your rifle is heavy barrel i'd say go for 5/8 or M17 (or higher). 5/8 would be more common.
