Just got breaking news on the BBC right now that actress Caroline Aherne, who was best known for roles in The Fast Show, Mrs Merton & The Royale Family, has died of throat cancer aged 52.

Very sad news. I used to love her role in the Royale Family. May she RIP.

Oh that's so sad, both her and Victoria Wood gone within a couple of months of each other :(

If memory serves she used t battle depression. Not uncommon for comedians.

Just realised now she's the voice on gogglebox.

That is so sad. An incredibly talented actress and comedian. Genuinely loved watching her...from her early stuff (fast show) right through.

She was brilliant in the royle family. Watch the episode where she goes into labour and her and Ricky Tomlinson sit on the floor talking and you will cry your eyes out.

She will truly be missed. An absolute great.

    RIP.

So shocked when I read this.
I absolutely loved The Royle Family when I was younger and still watch re-runs to this day.
She was such a talent. What a loss.

So sad great comedian and writer. Rip

This also marks the end of the royle family (I don't think Craig cash will write it without her or the rest of the actors will do it out of respect)

She actually co-wrote the Royale Family with Craig Cash (Dave).

    Loved her as Denise.

    Gets up to make tea.

Jim says "grab my fags while you're in there, love".

Denise replies "shove a brush up my arse and I'll sweep the floor".

    RIP.

Hard to believe. A troubled but gifted person.

When is 2016 going to end?

This absolutely sucks. I was a big fan of Caroline's - she was a huge talent.

Not unexpected though, I knew she had lung cancer.

R.I.P Loved her as Mrs Merton. A great talent. The curse of 2016 strikes again.

That's very sad. Commiserations to her family.

Hope Craig Cash is dealing Ok with the news. Must be like losing a partner for him.

    That's awful news.

She had an amazing talent for creating characters that were unlikable and said terribly harsh, funny things but were real and very lovable.

She was an insanely talented and hilarious lady. One of those people who I absolutely enjoyed everything she turned her hand to. 2016 has indeed been so ****. RIP Caroline and thanks for all the laughs...:(

Absolutely loved her in the Fast Show. This is so sad. As for the 2016 stuff, get used to it, baby boomers are dropping now like flies (although she was a bit younger than most 2016 celeb deaths), and this was the first generation of celebrity. Wait until 50 years from now when people like Rylan and the singer from the Go Compare ads are dying every 15 minutes (just about the amount of time they were famous for!)

    RIP Caroline :(

She had it tough. Cancer three times. Alcoholism. Broken marriage to Peter Hook and the death of her former partner (cant remember his name).
But boy was she funny. Very funny.
    Sad to hear this news.

Certainly very pretty. I think this might have been overlooked because of the characters she played.

So gutted about this. Such a talent.

It is easy to lose the run of yourself when a celeb dies but I will echo comments about her genius.

When you think of the premise of The Royal Family. Every episode was written with the characters based solely in the sitting room (talking about this-talking about that) and it never fluctuated from this. Every episode was hilarious and engaging. That takes some talent to write such a sit com.

Paul Daniels might be having a few words with her.

So Mr. Grim Reaper what first attracted you to Caroline

Personally, I generally only comment on the RIP threads of people I was a fan of, and I was a huge, huge fan of Caroline's so I have no problem saying I feel so sad right now. :( Watching comedy is a big part of my life and the people who have who made me laugh down the years have had a profound effect on me.

The episode of Royle family where nana dies for me is the most briliant piece of television ever made. So funny and yet so heartbreaking, its a work of genius. For her many faults Denise was my hero. Thanks for the laughs Caroline

Very sad to hear of her passing, she was very talented and her writing for 'The Royle Family' was exceptional at times, whilst both of you were watching Pulp Fiction.

    Sad to hear.

The Royle Family is one of the greatest sitcoms ever.

Incredibly well written in that it didn't feel like it was written at all.

The Queen of Sheba episode is one of the most beautiful and moving episodes of television ever created. To be able to get an episode of television so right shows what a genius she was.

RIP I absolutely loved the Royle family.

Ethanol is the most common form of which substance ?

Dave: Alcohol I taught you would have known that Denise.

Denise: I've never even drank Ethanol.

Genius writing you will be sorely missed.

The royle family is so lifelike, a lot of people can relate to it.

The sunday dinner, the grandmother being there, the neighbours etc

I knw the actor who played Twiggy died a few years ago, did the irish actress who played the neighbour Mary die too ???
