What's the story with getting a gun license to shoot a few rabbits on the uncles land? I have 6 convictions for basic things like criminal damage, Cannabis possession (1 joint) Drunk and disorderly..

All of these convictions happened 12 years ago when I was 18

I would say talk to a firearms officer in your local station.

Is there a list of conditions for a licence anywhere online or is there a specific body over it I could contact?

Depending on if you received a cusodial term within the last 5 years, and that term was 3 months or more you may be disentitled to apply.

Those that are disentitled include anyone under 14, of unsound mind, multiple previous convictions, intemperate character, etc.

So if you have received a sentence you are automatically disentitled. If you haven't but have multiple convictions you could also be disentitled. If you someone pass those two your Superintendent will look at your previous and then make a decision.

If you received a sentence no matter how long bar a life sentence (as it only ends with death) and the sentence is over 5 years old ie. you are 5 years out of jail you are not disentitled any more and may apply as normal

    No.

The law says once the sentence is not less than 3 months and is currently ongoing or happened within the last 5 years. As i said above:

As per section 8 of the 1925 act as amended by section 37 of the 2006 act:
    Section 8 wrote:
    (e) any person who has been sentenced by any court in Saorstát Eireann for any crime to imprisonment for any term of not less than three months which has not expired or has expired within five years previously

Your local firearms officer can give you some info but the Superintendent is the man/woman that makes the decision. So make an appointment to speak to the Super or both. Then take it from there.

The Super in my local station is actually a relation of the family, I'll see if I can get a word with him so. Thanks for advice

I was trying to put it in lay mans terms basically if you get a conviction and sentenced you are disentitled but once 5 years pass after the sentence is finished you are no longer considered disentitled

Only if the sentence is more than 3 months.

apply as normal then you should be fine and depending on your super if he wants to grant you the license is another thing, but then there's always the route of court because you have conducted yourself and made a change in your life and to be fare those are petty offences you would have a great chance being granted.

i wish you all the best.:)

I know a Super. He told me a story of a lad who applied for a firearms license. On the application form the lad stated no previous convictions. The Super ran a check on him and he had a record from when he was a young lad and did some silly things - nothing too serious. The Super called the lad in to talk to him and one of the first questions the Super asked was "Are you sure you don't have a record" to which yer man said "I don't have a record". The Super in this case gave yer man every opportunity to come clean - if he had come clean he was going to grant the license but because he lied in the meeting he denied his application. Moral of the story is come clean and cross your fingers!
